China urges Iran, Israel to seek ‘political resolution'
BEIJING: China urged Iran and Israel on Tuesday to seek a 'political resolution' to their conflict as Israel said it had agreed to US President Donald Trump's proposal for a ceasefire.
'The Chinese side calls on relevant parties to return to the correct path of political resolution at an early date,' foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said.
US President Donald Trump said a ceasefire between Iran and Israel was in force on Tuesday, urging both sides to 'not violate it' on the 12th day of the war between the two arch-foes.
The Israeli government said that it had agreed to the US-proposed ceasefire after removing the 'dual existential threat' of Tehran's nuclear programme and ballistic missiles.
Israel nonetheless warned it would 'respond forcefully' to any Iranian violation of the truce.
In response, China said it 'hoped that a ceasefire can be achieved as soon as possible'.
'The facts have proven that military means cannot bring peace and dialogue and negotiations are the right path to solving problems,' Guo added.
'The Chinese side is willing to work together with the international community to contribute efforts to maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East region,' he said.

On Monday, Europe's biggest economy revealed plans to reach the 3.5 percent level for core spending six years early -- in 2029 -- with the vast extra outlays necessary made possible after Germany eased its rules on taking on debt. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday that he would head to the NATO summit with the message that 'external security and defence capability are once again an absolute priority in (German) government policy'. 'We are bringing about a historic turnaround in defence spending.' On the summit, he said there were 'good signs' about 'the broad consensus on how to proceed... I see no reason to assume that we will be given the cold shoulder'. Since taking office in May, Merz has been racing to build up Germany's long-neglected armed forces, with the aim of turning them into the 'strongest conventional army' in Europe -- a radical shift in a country with strong pacifist traditions due to its dark wartime past. A drive has been launched to boost military personnel, which aims to attract 11,000 fresh recruits this year alone -- and Pistorius has suggested conscription, which was halted in Germany in 2011, could be reintroduced if too few people sign up voluntarily. Anwar said Masoud had asked him to relay this position to other Muslim nations to counter one-sided narratives and clarify the reasons behind Iran's retaliatory measures.

Germany's Merz says ‘moment has come' for Gaza ceasefire
BERLIN: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Tuesday said that 'the moment has come' for a ceasefire in Gaza between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Speaking to parliament, Merz reiterated Germany's support for Israel, which he said 'has a right to defend its existence and the safety of its citizens'. But he added that Germany reserves the right to 'critically question what Israel wants to achieve in the Gaza Strip'.
