Bad Actress: Meet the five friends from the Highlands who hope to pack out stadiums with their glam rock band

'You go to a Bad Actress show and you just see so many happy faces.'
Shaun Middleton, from Inverness, has only been an official member of the glam rock band for about a week.
But already he says his time playing bass guitar for the group has been 'unreal'.
'Everybody's always dancing and the mix of ages is fantastic,' he told The Press and Journal.
'Especially lately. It's been insane.'
Chick McFarlane is quick to agree with him, noting their recent performance at Elgin's MacMoray, where 10,000 people packed out Cooper Park.
Chick, 24, along with his brother Lui, 21, were still pupils at Forres Academy in 2017 when the band first formed.
They joined forces with Tommy Bell, 28, and former members Vinnie and Fearghas to create the band Airrade.
The name didn't stick.
After a bad review was less than complimentary about their choice, the group became Bad Actress – after a 'lesser-known' Def Leppard song from the album Songs from the Sparkle Lounge.
Since then, they have been a major hit in the Moray music scene as well as further afield.
Now, the band, made up of Shaun Middleton, Euan Campbell, Tommy Bell, Chick and Lui McFarlane, are playing a series of gigs across the UK.
And they are thinking big.
Their dreams are to do music full-time and they 'hope to pack out stadiums one day'.
At present, they have an array of jobs, from waitering and dishwashing, to working in retail and joinery and in a warehouse and joinery.
The McFarlane brothers first met Tommy when Chick auditioned to play drums in his band.
Chick was unsuccessful, but months later Tommy joined what would later become Bad Actress.
Chick said: 'Me and Lui wanted to start a new band, playing the type of music we're performing now.
'I asked Tommy if he wanted to join and he said 'as long as Chick isn't playing drums' – which I wasn't because I was playing guitar, so it worked out.'
Ever since the band was formed, they have been practising in Chick and Lui's dad's house in Forres.
They became even more familiar with the practise room during the Covid pandemic.
The band used the time that afforded to better promote themselves, which led to the group gaining attention from new fans in England and Wales.
Only a week ago, musicians Shaun Middleton and Euan Campbell, both from Inverness, joined the band.
Euan, 19, is now the youngest member and was originally a fan of Bad Actress.
So, when he was asked to play drums for them it was a 'full circle moment'.
Meanwhile, Shaun, 37, also joined as a permanent member a week ago.
'People compare us to a lot of different bands,' said Chick, who revealed band members take inspiration from acts such as AC/DC, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Van Halen, The 1975 and Tenacious D.
'A lot of people describe our music as a mix of glam and hard rock.'
Bad Actress are particularly looking forward to their gig at the Tooth and Claw in Inverness on June 13 as well as a show in Elgin on August 30.
'The show is really important to us,' Chick added.
'We love performing with a bit more flair.'
Lui, who is from Forres, was previously the drummer for Bad Actress.
Now he's now the lead singer.
In fact, MacMoray was only his second time performing as a vocalist.
He said: 'Our top goal would obviously be a stadium tour.
'That would be amazing and that's what we're working towards.'
Donnie Squair is manager of Elgin Town Hall and first watched Lui – then just nine – and Chick perform at the Wall of Rock in Lossiemouth in 2014.
He knew right away they had something special.
When asked if he thinks Bad Actress can make it big, he is very optimistic.
'The potential they have, the people they're meeting, the bands they're playing with, the audiences they're getting, I really can see it,' he said.
'When they played MacMoray, they held their own on that stage.
'You could see the talent years ago, and they're just something else now.'
With an album in the works and a line-up of gigs and festival performances for the rest of the year, who knows what they will do next.

BBC iPlayer now streaming ‘mind-blowing' Christopher Nolan film

The Christopher Nolan film Tenet is streaming now on BBC iPlayer. The 2020 action film aired on BBC One last week, meaning that it is also available on the streaming service for a limited time. Starring John David Washington as a man known only as 'The Protagonist,' the film follows a CIA Agent when he joins a secret organisation – Tenet – who hope to prevent World War III by mastering 'time inversion.' Tenet was released during the Covid-19 pandemic, and achieved fifth highest earning film of the year, in spite of safety limitations at the time. The most cerebral of Interstellar and Oppenheimer director Nolan's films, it has garnered a reputation for its uncompromising storytelling and near impenetrable lore. With the film now available for free on iPlayer, viewers can see for themselves. Tenet currently has a 70% 'fresh' rating on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers praising its complex narrative and bold ideas. Nola Ojumu described it as a 'mind-bending wonder' and 'fast-paced action thriller,' while praising the performances of Washington and co-stars Robert Pattinson, Sir Kenneth Branagh, and Elizabeth Debicki. Meanwhile, USA Today called it 'utterly dazzling and increasingly bewildering,' as The Independent described it as 'a thrilling place to get lost in.' 'The real joy of the film, nonetheless, is the sheer spectacle,' wrote The Times. Tenet's blend of sci-fi smarts and spy action resonated with viewers too, who have contributed to its 76% Popcornmeter score on the website. 'This movie is a mind bending collision of time inversion and nuclear war, Christopher Nolan completely unravels the fabric of linear storytelling and reweaves it into a well written cinematic masterpiece,' wrote user Landon B. Seth A said: 'Amazing visuals, amazing story. Truly captivating and a movie easily watchable over and over to see more and more revealing clues.' Of its plot, Zach W described it as: 'one of the most ambitious storylines ever attempted in a film,' while Imran Haque called it 'a mind-blowing movie.' However, with its often confusing storytelling and refusal to keep things linear, Tenet is the most divisive of Nolan's films to date. In addition to the confusing story, some detractors have bashed the film for its 'migrane-inducing' sound-mixing, making its dialogue inaudible behind layers of metallic screeching, seat-shaking explosions and relentless gunfire. It's a complaint often levelled at Nolan's films – especially his recent works, such as Dunkirk and Interstellar – and out in full force here. But, to many, the Christopher Nolan of it all is a feature, not a bug. 'It's the most Nolan movie ever and I'm not sure it makes since but I was enthralled nonetheless,' wrote Mad About Movies Podcast. If some viewers struggled to understand what is going on, then worry not – its leading man wasn't entirely sure either. More Trending 'I mean, literally on the first read, I thought I understood it, strangely,' he told GQ Hype. 'In my delirium, I thought I totally had, and I realised as the day went on, 'Ah, I don't have it at all.'' He added: 'But to answer your question directly, I'm still kind of grasping it…' Tenet is streaming now on BBC iPlayer. Got a story? In The Mud – Season 1 Episode 5 Recap & Review

Episode 5 Episode 5 of In The Mud starts with a flashback from five years ago, with Cecilia trying to calm a protest where Maria and Zurda are on the same team. The two women put up a fight against Cecilia, asking her to allow visitors inside the prison despite the COVID pandemic. Cecilia agrees to let some of the inmates have their cell-phones and while Maria asks Zurda to take responsibility for the phones, the protest ends. The episode moves to the present day as the police investigate the new inmate who died in the greenhouse. Cecilia tries to conceal the issue by claiming that the inmate died while trying to escape the prison. Meanwhile, Amparo is furious that Zarda was not able to protect her, upset that she had to protect herself. She threatens Zarda, which makes the latter promise to make the guilty person pay. Zarda tells Victoria that she is sure Maria was after this. At lunch, Marina joins the five, but Gladys leaves the table. Soledad, Yael and Olga wonder what's happened, and Marina explains that Gladys is mad at her. Olga starts to doubt Marina, too, when Maria is asked to meet Cecilia. Maria neither accepts nor denies responsibility for the inmate's death and asks Cecilia about Patricia and her baby to throw her off her back. Meanwhile, Yael tells Gladys that her daughter is being sent out of the prison for a short outing with the governor's wife. Gladys wonders why Cecilia is always nice to the pregnant women and wonders what is going on. Amparo gets furious when she learns that Maria has a monopoly on the meat that arrives inside the prison. Coco introduces Lana to Cleo, who promises to help reunite her with her son. Marina also talks to Lana, and during their conversation, she reveals how toxic her relationship with Martin was. She goes on to reveal how Martin was a jealous person but shared everything with his brother Dario, including her. Coco and Lana are shocked to hear this and promise to help Marina. Amparo notices the family unit and sees little children there. Elba tells Amparo how all the kids leave after they turn five years old, while the mothers stay back to complete their respective sentences. Elsewhere, Marina is thriving in prison as an adult content creator. She has all the privileges she needs while working out, taking videos and photos, eating the meals that she wants and consuming the drugs that she likes. All of this is at the behest of Zurda, who profits out of her work. China watches Marina from the side-lines when one day Zurda tells Marina that one of the men wants to have sex with her. Marina refuses, but Zurda puts her in place, declaring that she needs to entertain the client. Gladys shows up at Zurda's unit to collect the money according to her deal with Maria. The two women talk about Amparo, and Zurda threatens Gladys, asking her to keep away from Amparo. Marina is asked to go meet the client, but she asks Alan to come with her. Alan refuses, which upsets her. Gladys gives Maria the payment she had collected from the different units while Rocky gives her a massage. Maria reveals to Gladys how both her minions, Rocky and Cachete, were serving time for killing rapists. She asks Gladys to be prepared for any attack from Zurda and Amparo in the days to come. Maria gives Gladys a weapon from her collection to protect herself. That night, Amparo dreams of Cuervo but ends up suffering from a miscarriage in her sleep. Cecilia meets Amparo in the infirmary and consoles her, but the latter is shattered after losing the love of her life and his child, too. The next day, Andrés' wife shows up to pick Brisa up for a day out. At the same time, Marina's mother, Paula, comes to visit her. She asks Paula about her money. Marina is shocked to learn that Paula had spent all her money on her boyfriend. There is a cancer drive at the prison, and it is discovered that Gladys may have some growth in her breast. Gladys panics upon hearing the news but tries to keep calm. Meanwhile, Dr Soriano tells Vanessa that she is pregnant and asks her to keep the details of her pregnancy a secret. Marina learns that Alan was married and gets upset. She agrees to have sex with the client. Marina is disappointed when she is not able to climax during the intercourse, remembering her time with Alan. Yael, on the other hand, grows restless when Brisa does not come back that evening. She tries to visit Cecilia but is asked to go back. Just then, Eugenia shows up with Brisa. Yael takes her daughter back inside the prison. Meanwhile, the meat is delivered, and Maria goes to collect the best cuts for herself while Cachete and Rocky accompany her. Rocky leaves to collect Maria's medicine, leaving her behind with Cachete, who invites Amparo and the twins inside. The attack Maria while Gladys cries in the shower, worried about her diagnosis. Yael finds out about the diagnosis and tries to console Gladys. The two end up sharing a kiss while the twins kill Maria and hang her up on a meat hook. The Episode Review So, Zurda and Maria were friends before all this? No wonder Cecilia tried to cause differences between them; both of them were too much for her to handle as a team. It seems that Marina had a poor excuse for parents and had to work hard throughout her life. Even from prison, Marina is earning an income by selling her body on the internet, which makes me feel sorry for her. It's hard to see Gladys find out about her possible cancer diagnosis, but I am glad she has Yael in her journey. Given the fact that she has had a hard time coping with the loss of her husband, I hope Gladys continues to keep the bond that she has with the other four inmates. It was sad to see Maria die, but Amparo is a bigger threat to everyone inside now. I really wish she hadn't been caught because things would have been so different inside the prison. Gladys would be the best replacement for Maria now that she is dead but I am not sure how open she would be to stepping into her shoes, given the diagnosis. Lana Del Rey reveals body-shaming hell following extreme slim down after Covid weight gain

Lana Del Rey has been swept up in a body-shaming scandal with another singer following her jaw-dropping weight loss. The Born to Die songstress, 40, lost a huge amount of weight over the last year after her figure ballooned during the Covid pandemic. Despite being in the best shape of her life, Lana shockingly accused transgender singer-songwriter Ethel Cain, 27, of body-shaming her. In a since-deleted Instagram comment, Lana wrote, 'I didn't know who Ethel was until a few years ago - when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight. 'I was confused at what she was getting at. Then when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life I was definitely disturbed.' Ethel reacted to the drama on her Instagram Stories on Thursday by announcing that Lana had blocked her. While it's unclear how exactly Lana and Ethel's beef started, fans have long speculated that the pair have been trading subtle jabs at each other for years. Since the feud erupted publicly, countless fans have taken to social media to weight in on the situation. 'I feel so so sorry for Lana Del Rey and all the comments on her weight that she had to face for years. I swear to god I have no idea why people are so at ease to criticize her every single time,' commented one. 'Not everyone getting mad at Lana knowing damn f***ing well y'all would be Lana if you found out some b***h was comparing your weight gain to CARTOON CREATURES,' raged another. However, others defended Ethel and said that there was no proof that the rising singer had ever body-shamed Lana or even commented on her weight before. 'I wish I could find any evidence of body shaming. Lana stans please send them because...' commented one. A second added, 'I mean there's no other evidence of Ethel body shaming Lana so people can't say either way.' Lana, who was known for her slender figure when she burst onto the music scene in 2011, gained weight during the Covid pandemic. She was often pictured at the time running out to get fast food. The hitmaker returned with a much slimmer physique last year, most notably while headlining Coachella. The 40-year-old has been flaunting her incredible weight loss on tour While some fans have speculated that she may have used Ozempic to achieve her trim look, others believe that her figure is down to hard work in the gym. Lana has always been a fan of strength training and has been seen working out with fitness coach Kirk Myers, who also trains Taylor Swift. Chiropractor Dr. Daniel Psaltis also claimed that Lana's weight loss was all natural in a viral TikTok video. 'Look at those quads. That is not Ozempic, folks,' he said. 'That's not something you can buy in the store, that's good old fashioned hard work in the gym. Her transformation is amazing, and doable for most people.' Lana's rival Ethel burst onto the music scene in 2022 with her debut album, 'Preacher's Daughter'. The album was acclaimed by critics and reached No. 10 on the Billboard 200, making Ethel the first openly transgender artist to score a top ten album. Her indie-pop style has earned her comparisons to Lana from music critics, which Ethel has dismissed as 'lazy'. She released her sophomore album, 'Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You', on August 8. Meanwhile, Lana has been busy working on her tenth studio album for the last two years. It was originally a country-inspired record called Lasso, but the songstress scrapped the idea and changed the album's title to The Right Person Will Stay. She has since scrapped the second title and the album currently has no release date. The singer most recently completed a sold-out stadium tour of the UK.
