Brewers Association ranks top 50 breweries in the U.S. See where Ohio brewers land

Yahoo19-04-2025

Four Ohio-based breweries ranked among the largest craft brewers in the U.S. last year.
The Brewers Association, a Boulder, Colorado-based group, released its list of the top 50 craft brewing companies and top 50 overall for 2024.
'While distribution is only becoming more competitive, the top 50 list reflects some of the strongest, most emblematic companies in craft beer,' Matt Gacioch, staff economist for the Brewers Association, said in a prepared statement. 'Enduring brands continue to resonate with drinkers — regardless of size or location. In 2024, eight new breweries moved into the top 50 craft list since the year prior — evidence that brewers are still finding ways to lean into what's working.'
The Brewers Association ranks breweries each year based on the number of barrels produced.
Rhinegeist Brewery in Cincinnati earned 16th place for craft brewers and 27th overall. Rhinegeist, known for its Truth IPA, also passed Great Lakes Brewing Co. in Cleveland in the rankings, and now holds the honor of being the largest Ohio-based craft brewery.
It's been a meteoric rise for Rhinegeist, which opened in 2013. Five years ago, the brewery was ranked 26th.
"Sixteenth overall craft brewery by volume and number ONE in Ohio!" the brewery posted on Facebook. "We couldn't have done it without all of the Rhinegeist fans out there — THANK YOU for choosing us!"
Great Lakes — the oldest craft brewery in Ohio — fell one spot to 18th for craft brewers and was ranked 29th overall. BrewDog Brewing Co. in suburban Columbus was 30th among craft breweries and 41st overall.
And Fat Head's Brewery — which has a production brewery and restaurant in Middleburg Heights and brewpubs in North Olmsted and suburban Canton — was 48th. It was the first time Fat Head's cracked the rankings.
"An incredible achievement made possible by the hard work and dedication of our amazing and committed team," Fat Head's posted to Facebook.
Meanwhile, the Massachusetts-based Boston Beer Co., which operates a production brewery and a separate brewery and taproom in Cincinnati, was No. 2 among craft breweries behind only D.G. Yuengling and Son, and 10th overall.
Anheuser-Busch Inc. and MolsonCoors — which both have breweries in Ohio — were first and second, respectively, among the top 50 overall brewing companies. Anheuser-Busch Inc. has a brewery in Columbus, and MolsonCoors has a brewing site in Trenton.
Craft brewers made 23.1 million barrels of beer last year, according to the Brewers Association. It was 4% less than the previous year.
Here's a look at the top 10 craft breweries last year:
D.G. Yuengling and Son Inc: Pottsville, Pennsylvania
Boston Beer Co.: Boston and Cincinnati
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.: Chico, California
Tilray Beer Brands: New York
Duvel Moortgat USA: Cooperstown, New York
Gambrinus: Shiner, Texas
Matt Brewing Co.: Utica, New York
Athletic Brewing Company: Milford, Connecticut
Brooklyn Brewery: Brooklyn, New York
Monster Brewing: Longmont, Colorado
In 2024, the number of craft breweries nationwide was 9,612, made up of 1,934 microbreweries, 3,389 brewpubs, 3,695 taproom breweries and 266 regional craft breweries.
The number of craft breweries declined nationwide last year for the first time since 2005.
'In a mature market, not every year is going to be defined by substantial growth,' Gacioch said in a prepared statement. 'While progress may not come in additional production volume, it can still come in honing operations, business practices, and world-class beer. Even in this challenging environment, small brewers have demonstrated that they have the skills and resilience to fight through this period to be better positioned for the months and years ahead.'
The Brewers Association also put together a list of the top 50 overall brewing companies for 2024. Here's how the top 10 stacked up:
Anheuser-Busch: St. Louis, Missouri
MolsonCoors: Chicago
Constellation: Chicago
Heineken USA: White Plains, New York
Pabst Brewing Co.: Los Angeles
Diageo: Norwalk, Connecticut
D.G. Yuengling and Son: Pottsville, Pennsylvania
Kirin-Lion: Fort Collins, Colorado
FIFCO USA: Rochester, New York
Boston Beer Co.: Boston and Cincinnati

Low-carbon jet fuel company foresees huge investment in western North Dakota

Chris Ryan, right, president and chief operating officer of renewable fuels company Gevo, speaks June 10, 2025, in West Fargo, N.D., at the Midwest Ag Summit. At left is Greg Lardy, vice president for agriculture at North Dakota State University. (Jeff Beach/North Dakota Monitor) WEST FARGO, N.D. — The demand for jet fuel is going up. The demand for gasoline is going down. That's the simple explanation from Chris Ryan, the president and chief operating officer of Gevo, on why the company plans to add a sustainable aviation fuel plant to the corn-based ethanol plant it purchased at Richardton in southwest North Dakota. Ryan said the low-carbon jet fuel won't come cheap – throwing out a ballpark figure of $500 million for a potential project still years down the road. Ryan spoke Tuesday in Fargo at the Midwest Agriculture Summit hosted by The Chamber of Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo. Colorado-based Gevo bought the Red Trail Energy ethanol plant at Richardton last year. The Red Trail plant was the first ethanol producer in the country to implement carbon sequestration — capturing carbon dioxide from the plant's corn fermentation tanks and pumping it into permanent underground storage. The CO2 sequestration is key in lowering the carbon intensity score of the plant and for sustainable jet fuel production. Low-carbon fuels can fetch a higher price than traditional liquid fuels. 'We could make gasoline, but it's a diminishing market,' Ryan said. 'So jet fuel is a kind of sexy thing to talk about these days.' In an interview with the North Dakota Monitor, Ryan said there is plenty of room to add a jet fuel plant at the 500-acre Richardton site. He said the plant would add about 50 jobs, about the same number that the ethanol plant employs. Expanding the ethanol plant also is a possibility, Ryan said. The company also is considering adding wind turbines at Richardton to provide power and lower the carbon score even further, he said. Even though renewable energy tax credits are a possible target for budget cuts under President Donald Trump, he said wind energy at the site still makes good economic sense. Corn price connection to carbon capture hard to pin down Gevo also has plans for a sustainable aviation fuel plant at Lake Preston in southeast South Dakota. The future of that plant depends in large part on the five-state Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline project that would take carbon emissions from ethanol plants to western North Dakota for underground storage. Ryan said when the South Dakota project was conceived, it did not include carbon capture. But as construction costs soared with the COVID-19 pandemic, he said it became necessary to sign on to the Summit pipeline project. He said the federal tax credits for carbon sequestration would help offset the higher building costs. The project has stalled as Summit has run into permitting challenges and a new state law giving landowners more power in easement negotiations. 'We really need the pipeline,' Ryan said. He added that Gevo bought more land than it needed for the project. That is allowing for other projects at the site, benefiting Gevo and the Lake Preston area, he said. The Summit delays spurred the purchase of Red Trail, which had the advantage of sitting almost on top of an area suitable for underground carbon storage. 'We had to take our destiny into our own hands,' Ryan said, and not be dependent on the Summit pipeline. He said Gevo can 'copy and paste' the engineering work done for the South Dakota site to the Richardton site. SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX While the carbon dioxide from the Richardton plant is being pumped underground, Ryan said Gevo recognizes that it has a potential for use in North Dakota's oilfields, making oil wells more productive through what is called enhanced oil recovery. North Dakota leaders have been trumpeting the economic benefits of enhanced oil recovery. Ryan said if the oil industry is willing to pay for carbon dioxide to use in enhanced oil recovery, Gevo would sell the CO2 rather than pump it underground. 'We don't care where the revenue comes from, right? Today, we sequester it for a tax credit, and we can sell carbon credits,' Ryan said. 'Or you can sell it to somebody for enhanced oil recovery.' He said he sees it as another advantage of doing business in North Dakota. 'People in North Dakota get that, they understand the value of that,' Ryan said. Uranium discovered in Colorado's Chimney Hollow Dam, the largest built in United States in 20 years

Just weeks before completion of construction, Northern Water has confirmed uranium has been discovered at the site of the Chimney Hollow Reservoir and Dam. The project, which is expected to serve more than 1 million Colorado residents, has been in the making for decades. CBS For many, uranium is typically associated with nuclear weapons and power. The radioactive element was first detected at the end of 2024, however Northern Water was unable to determine the source of the uranium until recently. Now they know. It's coming from the rocks they used to build the 350-foot dam, which were mined from the very land they plan on flooding with water. "As we were building this dam, we were using rocks that were quarried on-site," said Jeff Stahla, spokesperson for Northern Water. CBS News Colorado's Dillon Thomas was taken into the project zone in 2024 where dozens of large trucks could be seen mining rock from the bottom of the future-reservoir. Trucks were moving more than 62,000 tons per day from the quarry to the dam. Now near-complete, the Chimney Hollow Dam is the fourth largest dam in Colorado and the largest built in the United States since the year 2000. Northern Water is now working with the Environmental Protection Agency to monitor the levels of uranium being detected. Stahla said the water supplier wanted to be transparent with the community as quickly as they could be. CBS "We are looking to be finished with construction in the next six weeks. As we started to consider filling the reservoir, we wanted to make sure the public was aware of some of the conditions we found and that we are going to address them," Stahla said. Northern Water currently plans to begin filling the reservoir in August. Stahla said the discovery of the uranium is not enough to derail the project. "The concern about uranium is not about radioactivity or things people often associate with uranium. But, it is from the standard of long term ingestion," Stahla said. Stahla said the company is considering their options moving forward. Those include treating the initial fill of the reservoir or allowing the water do naturally do the work for them. Citing the reservoir's eventual capacity of hundreds of billions of gallons of water, Stahla said there is a possibility the initial fill of the reservoir will wash the uranium off the dam and dilute it. Eventually, as water cycles in and out of the reservoir, the concern of the uranium may not longer be an issue. "It is a strong possibility that these mineral levels will decrease far below the standards set by the EPA," Stahla said. Northern Water said they will continue to monitor the uranium levels moving forward and will work with health agencies to assure the drinking water that will one day fill the reservoir will be safe for consumption.

Australia's Qantas to close low-cost arm Jetstar Asia

(Reuters) -Australian flag carrier Qantas said on Wednesday it will close Jetstar Asia, the group's Singapore-based low-cost unit, in a bid to recycle up to A$500 million ($326.40 million)as part of its fleet renewal plans. Qantas said that 13 Jetstar Asia Airbus A320 aircraft will be progressively redeployed to Australia and New Zealand. Jetstar Asia continues to be negatively affected by rising supplier costs, high fees at airports and rising competition in the region. "This has fundamentally challenged the low-cost airline's ability to deliver returns comparable to the stronger performing core markets in the group," Qantas said. Jetstar Asia is currently expected to post an underlying EBIT loss of A$35 million in the current financial year. The airline will cease operating on July 31 and will continue flights for the next seven weeks.
