Are Americans with 401(k) accounts saving enough for retirement? Fidelity's latest report has this to say

Time of India2 days ago

After years of slow progress, Americans may finally be getting close to saving enough for retirement, or at least those with access to a 401(k) plan are, as per a report.
Americans are getting closer to retirement readiness
Fidelity Investment's latest
retirement savings report
revealed that in the first quarter of 2025, the average total 401(k) savings rate on its plans reached 14.3%, reported USA Today. That's an all-time high and just a step away from the long-recommended 15% benchmark many financial advisers suggest for a secure retirement, as per the report.
A decade of progress
Ten years ago, the picture looked different, as in early 2015, employees were saving just 8.1% of their pre-tax income, while employers added 4.4%, for a total savings rate of 12.5%, according to USA Today. By comparison, today's employees are contributing 9.5%, with employers pitching in 4.8%, as per the report.

Vice President of Thought Leadership at Fidelity, Mike Shamrell said, 'It's basically the rate that we recommend that will allow you to live the same lifestyle in retirement that you did before you retired,' quoted USA Today.
Better employer matches help
One reason for the increase is that employers are more generous with their matching contributions. As competition for talent grows, many companies now offer to match up to 5% of employee salaries, as per USA Today.

A senior director of investing at Betterment, Mindy Yu said, 'That's basically free money for
saving for retirement
, and that is something that employees value,' as quoted in the report.
Auto-enrollment is making a difference
Auto-enrollment policies are also having an impact as since the beginning of 2025, most new 401(k) plans are required to automatically enroll workers unless they opt out, as per USA Today. This simple change has encouraged more participation and is steadily improving savings habits, according to the report.
More than one-third of Fidelity's plans now auto-enroll workers at contribution rates of 5% or more, reported USA Today. Many plans also include auto-escalation features, which increase contributions gradually every year, and nearly three-quarters of Fidelity's plans now include this feature, reported USA Today.
A head of thought leadership at Alight Solutions, Rob Austin said, 'Unless a new hire takes action, they're going to be saving for the plan,' adding, 'That's much different than how 401(k)s first started, and you had to enroll on your own,' as quoted in the report.
Gen Z steps up
Fidelity's data shows that Gen Z workers, though they are in the early phase of their careers, are saving at a promising rate of 11.2%, as per USA Today. That's close behind Millennials at 13.5% and Generation X at 15.4%, according to the report.
Austin said, 'I think most of the newer, younger cohorts are in this environment where they learn that they need to be saving a lot,' quoted USA Today.
FAQs
What's a good savings rate for my 401(k)?
Financial advisers typically recommend saving at least 15% of your salary, including employer match for a secure retirement.
What's auto-enrollment and why does it matter?
Auto-enrollment automatically signs you up for a 401(k) when you start a job. It's helped more people start saving without needing to opt in.

Elon Musk's Starlink to face competition from Amazon's Kuiper satellites? Here's everything we know

Elon Musk's Starlink is set to face some tough competition after years of dominating the market of internet services via satellites. Jeff Bezos' Project Kuiper entered the broadband network market with its first satellite launch in April. Now, the Amazon chief's new project is set to deploy another batch of satellites, as reported by USA Today. As per the outlet, Colorado-based United Launch Alliance is the contractor for the launch. The new batch of Amazon Kuiper satellites could get off the ground as early as Monday, June 16. One of Starlink's biggest advantages has been the SpaceX two-stage Falcon 9 rocket, which is used to launch the satellites into space. Musk's company has sent over 7,000 Starlink satellites into space since 2019, as per its website. The Federal Aviation Administration, the body responsible for licensing commercial rocket launches, recently allowed SpaceX to increase its annual Falcon 9 rocket launches from Southern California's Vandenberg Space Force Base to 50. As for Kuiper, the venture provides an opportunity for Jeff Bezos to compete with the richest man in the world. Kuiper promises to provide high-speed internet across the globe, for which it is establishing a network of satellites connected to antennas, fiber, and other equipment on the ground. Also read: Venice locals protest against Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sanchez's lavish wedding: 'No space for Bezos' The Project Kuiper satellite launch may take place on Monday, June 16. The ULA Atlas V rocket could take off as early as 1:25 pm ET from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, as per USA Today. A successful mission could double the number of satellites the company has deployed, but it still has a long way to go to catch up with Starlink. Amazon aims to invest $10 billion in Project Kuiper, including a $140 million processing plant at NASA's Kennedy Space Center to prep satellites for launch. It plans to launch around 3,232 advanced low-Earth orbit satellites in total. If things go as planned, the company said it expects to "begin delivering service to customers later this year." The plan starts at $80 per month with a hardware cost of $349, as per CNET. The high cost of Starlink can be a detriment for some users. This can depend on the 5G service provider opted for. Many 5G providers can give similar speeds to Starlink. Starlink offered a free kit to new customers in select areas if they opted for a 12-month Residential service plan.

Taiwan adds China's Huawei and SMIC to export control list

Taiwan has added China's Huawei Technologies and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp ( SMIC ) to its export control list, which includes other proscribed organisations like the Taliban and al Qaeda. Inclusion on the economy ministry's trade administration's strategic high-tech commodities entity list means Taiwanese companies will need government approval before exporting any products to the companies. The companies, both at the centre of China's chip and artificial intelligence (AI) ambitions, were included in an updated version of the ministry's trade administration's website. Neither company responded to requests for comment outside of office hours at the weekend. A total of 601 entities were added, including Huawei and SMIC, along with entities from Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Myanmar, and China, it said. Both Huawei and SMIC have been working hard to catch up in the chip technology race. Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory despite the strong objections of Taipei's government, already has tight chip export controls when it comes to Taiwanese companies either manufacturing in the country or supplying Chinese firms. Huawei is on a U.S. Commerce Department trade list that essentially bars it from receiving U.S. goods and technology, as well as foreign-made goods such as chips from companies like TSMC made with U.S. technology. Last October, TechInsights, a Canadian tech research firm, took apart Huawei's 910B AI processor and found a TSMC chip in it. The multi-chip 910B is viewed as the most advanced AI accelerator mass-produced by a Chinese company. TSMC suspended shipments to China-based chip designer Sophgo, whose chip matched the one in the Huawei 910B and, in November the U.S. Commerce Department ordered TSMC to halt shipments of more chips to Chinese customers. Taiwan's government has also repeatedly vowed to crack down on what it says are efforts by Chinese companies, including SMIC, to steal technology and entice chip talent away from the island. SMIC is China's largest chipmaker and has ramped up investment to expand production capacity and strengthen China's domestic semiconductor capability in the face of sweeping U.S. export controls.

Karnataka placed first in country for highest wind power capacity

Karnataka was awarded first place in the country for achieving the highest wind power capacity addition of 1,331.48 MW in the financial year 2024-25. State Energy Minister K J George received the award from Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, during the Global Wind Day 2025 celebrations themed 'Pawan-Urja: Powering the Future of India', held in Bengaluru on Sunday. Tamil Nadu and Gujarat followed Karnataka, adding 1,136.37 MW and 954.76 MW respectively, said a statement issued by the office of Minister George. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Beyond Text Generation: An AI Tool That Helps You Write Better Grammarly Install Now Undo "This is not just a number-it is a reflection of Karnataka's unwavering commitment to clean energy," George said after receiving the award. He said the proactive policies, implementation capabilities, and vision have positioned Karnataka as a leader in the renewable energy landscape. Live Events The addition of 1,331 MW in a single year demonstrates the state's momentum in harnessing wind energy for a sustainable future, he explained. According to him, Karnataka's total installed wind power capacity now stands at 7,351 MW and is a testament to its consistent leadership in renewable energy. "This achievement is symbolic of our ability to execute large-scale projects and provide clean energy to industries, farmers, and households," the minister added. George reaffirmed Karnataka's support of the national target of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, of which 100 GW is projected from wind energy. "Karnataka is preparing to implement 17 GW of wind power projects, with over 5 GW planned under the Renewable Energy Cluster Programme. Infrastructure is being strengthened through the establishment of more than 20 substations, 400 KV corridors, and a Renewable Energy Reserve Zone," he told the gathering. George said that at the 2025 Global Investors Meet, the state signed Rs four lakh crore worth of investment agreements for renewable energy-nearly 40 per cent of the state's total investments, further demonstrating the confidence of global and domestic investors in Karnataka's green energy vision. Speaking on the occasion, Joshi said he found it especially meaningful to celebrate Global Wind Day in Karnataka-the land of Hanuman, the original symbol of wind power. Joshi was referring to the belief that Hampi in Karnataka was the ancient Kishkindha, the monkey kingdom of Ramayana era, where Hanuman was born. The union minister underlined India's global standing as the fourth-largest wind power generator, with an installed capacity of 51.5 GW. "The national goal is to reach 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, including 100 GW from wind power, of which 30 GW will come from offshore sources. Additionally, India exported 3.5 to 4 GW worth of wind turbines and modules in the current financial year," Joshi pointed out. He also emphasised on the key challenges ahead, which are ensuring 24x7 power supply and grid stability through integration of wind, solar, and pumped storage systems. Joshi also stressed upon prioritising competitive electricity tariffs and focusing on domestic manufacturing and exports to build India's green energy economy. On the occasion, the union minister released the report 'Ramping up local manufacturing for wind turbines in India', which outlines a roadmap for boosting domestic wind turbine manufacturing capabilities. Karnataka Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta told the audience that the state's installed wind power capacity now surpasses the combined capacity of countries like South Africa, Portugal, and New Zealand, and is comparable to that of Sweden and Australia.
