Nathan Lyon believes the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025 represents a significant step in Australia's quest to become one of the all-time great Test teams.
The 37-year-old off-spinner is part of Andrew McDonald's squad to take on South Africa at Lord's in the finale of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle.
Australia will be looking to defend the title they won in 2023 after beating India by 209 runs at The Oval, and Lyon, who took the match-winning wicket of Mohammed Siraj in that victory, wants to build on the progress that has been made since then.
"It is important that we look at this week as a celebration piece," he said.
"We've done incredibly well over the last couple of years, at home and away, and that is something that as a team, we should be really proud of.
"In my eyes, we're on a journey to becoming a great Australian team. We're not there yet, I'm well aware of that, but that's our goal too.
"This game is another step up that ladder."
Australia finished second in the league table during the 2023-25 WTC cycle, having claimed 67.54 per cent of the points on offer to them. They were also the only nation not to lose a series in that time, winning four of the six series they played.
Their percentage was only bettered by the table-topping Proteas' 69.44 per cent.
Lyon, a New South Wales native, has taken 56 wickets against South Africa in 18 matches during his career and expects nothing less than a fierce contest with the side captained by Temba Bavuma.
"Yes, we've been here before, but South Africa qualified first during this World Test Championship," he continued. "Throughout these two years, they've done something really well to finish top, and so they deserve that home changing room leading into this game.
Australia have plenty of firepower within their bowling ranks for this match, with five of those selected within the top 14 of the ICC Men's Test Bowling rankings.
Lyon himself sits fifth on that list, with captain Pat Cummins in third, Josh Hazlewood in fourth, with Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland in 11th and 14th, respectively.
Cummins (73), Starc (72) and Lyon (66) also currently occupy positions two through four on the leading wicket-takers list for this edition of the WTC.
The presence of multiple experienced and skilled bowlers in the Australian camp is only improving the standards in training, revealed Lyon.
"As a bowling squad, we are very proud of where we are currently at," he said.
"But we're not leaving any stone unturned and we're still trying to get better as a bowling group.
"I feel that spurs each and every one of us on to get better."
Australia last played Test cricket in England during the 2023 Ashes series – the opening contest of the 2023-25 WTC cycle – but many from the squad have since taken the opportunity to return to play on the shores of the old rival.
Lyon played for Lancashire in 2024, while Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green and Beau Webster have represented Glamorgan, Gloucestershire and Warwickshire, respectively, this season.
Green's stint in England has been particularly impressive, with the all-rounder plundering 467 runs in just five County Championship Division 2 matches at an average of 66.71. He has also scored three hundreds, including match-winning knocks of 128 and 67 not out against Kent in mid-May.
And Lyon feels the 26-year-old will learn a lot from his stint in the West Country.
"It's been amazing to have Greeny over here," he added.
"I think he's played four or five games for Gloucestershire and done really well. So, hopefully, that gives him the confidence to pick things up from where he left off.
"It's important, especially for the younger players, like Greeny, to come over here and play county cricket.
"I feel like you get a lot of understanding of how the game is played over here in these conditions, how the Dukes ball moves around and how the overhead conditions play a role."

WI announce revamped Test squad for Aus series

West Indies team walking towards the dressing room after wrapping up victory against Pakistan. Photo: AFP/File The West Indies have unveiled a significantly revamped Test squad for their upcoming home series against Australia, marking the beginning of the 2025–2027 ICC World Test Championship cycle. Roston Chase, recently appointed Test captain and returning to the format for the first time since March 2023, will lead a youthful and restructured lineup. Notably, white-ball captain Shai Hope makes a comeback to the Test side, while his ODI deputy, Brandon King, has earned his maiden Test call-up. Veteran pacer Kemar Roach has been omitted from the squad, signaling a move toward building a new core. The top order has been strengthened with the return of opener John Campbell and the inclusion of 24-year-old Kevlon Anderson, who has been rewarded for his strong domestic form. Anderson impressed in the 2024/25 West Indies Championship, amassing 573 runs in 11 innings with three centuries, finishing third among the tournament's leading run-scorers. "I'm excited about the inclusion of young prospect Kevlon Anderson, who comes in after solid seasons in our domestic competitions to help provide stability in the top order, while the return of Shai Hope is welcomed given his consistency in white ball cricket," head coach Daren Sammy said. "Brandon King's inclusion fits a role we have identified that needs special focus to take our team to those closer to the top of the rankings," he added. The bowling attack also features new faces. Twenty-one-year-old Johann Layne joins the squad after claiming 63 wickets in 17 first-class matches. Anderson Phillip, who was part of the squad during the Pakistan tour, has earned his place again following a five-wicket haul for West Indies A against South Africa A. "The start of the Test Championship Cycle is critical to building positive momentum as we strive to work our way up the rankings. Beginning with a strong showing against a team like Australia would be ideal in our quest to bring West Indies back to the helm of Test Cricket," he said. "It was imperative that we sought to put a squad together that was well equipped, in both the batting and bowling departments, to manage the ebbs and flows of this format of the game, while possessing the ability to apply pressure in key phases, through disciplined, purposeful play," he added. Several players who were part of the recent Test tour to Pakistan have missed out, including Joshua Da Silva, Alick Athanaze, Kavem Hodge, Amir Jangoo, Gudakesh Motie, and Kevin Sinclair. For the unversed, the three-match Test series will commence on June 25 in Barbados. West Indies squad for Australia Tests: Roston Chase (Captain), Jomel Warrican (Vice Captain), Kevlon Anderson, Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Keacy Carty, Justin Greaves, Shai Hope, Tevin Imlach, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Johann Layne, Mikyle Louis, Anderson Phillip, Jayden Seales.

Gillespie takes a dig at PCB Chief Naqvi

Jason Gillespie resigned as the national team's Test coach just days before the South Africa Test series last year. Photo: AFP/File Former Pakistan red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie has once again taken a dig at Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi for absence from a crucial team-building session, known as the "Connection Camp." Speaking on The Howie Games podcast, Gillespie recounted the efforts made by himself and white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten to attend the camp—initiated by Kirsten—only to find a noticeable lack of engagement from the top PCB official. "Gary came up with this great idea of a connection camp. Everyone in Pakistan cricket basically shared their experiences in that meeting. I flew in from Australia, Gary flew in from South Africa, the Chairman Mohsin Naqvi dialed in Zoom," said Gillespie. "He is based in Lahore, but he did not come, while Gary came in from Africa. We both felt that the Chairman could not even drive 20 minutes to come here - that was a bit unusual." he added. The Pakistan Cricket Board held the camp on September 23, 2024, with the aim of improving communication, collaboration, and performance among the national team. The session featured eight senior players, including Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Rizwan, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Saud Shakeel, Shadab Khan, and Shan Masood. PCB Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer had described the camp as a timely initiative ahead of a packed cricketing calendar, with its primary objective being the development of a unified vision and mission for the national team. It is pertinent to mention that the former Australian pacer resigned as the national team's Test coach just days before the South Africa Test series last year. Bowlers surge in rankings Pakistan bowlers have made significant gains in the latest ICC T20I rankings, thanks to their impressive performances in recent international fixtures. In the bowling rankings, Pakistan pacers Haris Rauf and Abbas Afridi have surged forward, both occupying the joint 18th position with 605 rating points. Left-arm speedster Shaheen Afridi has also moved up, now holding the 35th spot with 552 points. Pakistan's T20I vice-captain Shadab Khan climbed to 58th place in the rankings, alongside spinner Abrar Ahmed, both earning 476 points. However, young bowlers Naseem Shah and Sufiyan Muqeem have slipped in the standings, now placed at 92nd and 95th positions with 407 and 406 points, respectively. New Zealand's Jacob Duffy currently leads the T20I bowling charts, while England's Adil Rashid has claimed the second spot, pushing India's Varun Chakaravarthy down to third. In the T20I batting rankings, Pakistan's star duo Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan have retained their 12th and 13th positions, respectively. Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Haris also holds firm at the 30th spot. However, emerging middle-order batter Hasan Nawaz has slipped to 46th place, while Saim Ayub has dropped to 62nd. Pakistan T20I captain (name omitted in original text) has fallen two spots to 76th with 430 rating points, and Fakhar Zaman has slipped one place to 87th. Australia's Travis Head continues to dominate the T20I batting rankings, followed by India's Abhishek Sharma in second. England's Phil Salt has dropped to fourth place, as young Indian batter Tilak Varma rises to third.

Australia fight back after Rabada's fifer in WTC final

South Africa's Kagiso Rabada celebrates with teammates after taking the wicket of Australia's Cameron Green, caught out by Aiden Markram. Photo: Reuters Listen to article South Africa were reeling on 43-4 at stumps on the first day of the World Test Championship final at Lord's on Wednesday after dismissing defending champions Australia for 212. Seamer Kagiso Rabada took 5-51 as South Africa's bowling unit made a strong start to the match but their inexperienced batting line-up came under fire as soon as they began their reply. Australia's fast bowling attack proved as fearsome as anything South Africa had to offer and by the close of play they were firmly in command. "I think we're in a good spot. We've probably had a few missed opportunities with the bat to try and get a bigger total, but I think the wicket's offered something all day," said Australia's Steve Smith. South Africa trail Australia by 169 runs after a day on which 14 wickets fell and captain Temba Bavuma (3) and David Bedingham (8) will resume on Thursday with a daunting task ahead. "We feel there is a lot of opportunity still left in the contest," Rabada said. A see-saw contest started with South Africa's decision to put Australia in to bat in a calculated gamble on a good pitch but with cloudy conditions that Bavuma sought to capitalise on.. It was vindicated when Rabada and Marco Jansen took two wickets each to leave Australia struggling on 67-4 at lunch, with Marnus Labuschagne's first innings as an opener ending after 17 runs and the returning Cameron Green lasting only three balls. When the sun came out at the start of the second session, however, Smith and Beau Webster added 79 runs for the fifth wicket before Smith was dismissed by part-time spinner Aiden Markram for 66. It was the only wicket to fall in the afternoon session as Australia advanced to 190-5 at tea, only for fortunes to swing back South Africa's way after tea as they took Australia's last five wickets for 22 runs in 6.4 overs. Keshav Maharaj bowled Alex Carey (23) attempting an injudicious stroke, followed by two wickets for Rabada who removed Pat Cummins for one and induced Webster into a thick edge with extra bounce. Webster top scored with a test-best 72 in his fourth appearance for Australia. Jansen bowled Nathan Lyon to end with figures of 3-49 and Rabada completed his five-wicket haul by castling Mitchell Starc. South Africa came in to bat with 90 minutes left in the day's play and lost Markram in their first over as he chopped the ball onto his boot and then the stumps to give Starc a first wicket. The left-armer also snagged Ryan Rickelton for 16, encouraged into a drive and well caught by Usman Khawaja at first slip, as South Africa fell to 19-2. Wiaan Mulder, dropped on one, lasted 44 balls but made only six runs as he looked thoroughly uncomfortable after being promoted to number three in the order and Tristan Stubbs was clean bowled by Josh Hazlewood for two shortly before the close.
