83-year-old breaks own record as oldest Comrades Marathon finisher
According to Lowvelder, he completed the 89.98km race this past weekend. Mosehla finished the Pietermaritzburg to Durban race in under 11:47:27.
In 2023, Mosehla broke the record held by Wally Hayward, who completed the Comrades Marathon at 80 in 1989. In 2024, Mosehla finished the race at the age of 82.
The 2025 race marked his 12th finish since his first attempt at age 63.
The Limpopo MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Funani Jerry Maseko, congratulated Mosehla on making history once again.
He said Mosehla crossing the finish line showed extraordinary endurance, discipline and spirit.
'He is the living embodiment of what it means to never give up,' said Maseko. 'At 83 years old, he continues to inspire not just Limpopo, but the entire nation, proving that determination knows no age. His story is one of courage, perseverance and undying commitment to fitness and excellence.'
Maseko noted that Mosehla's historic achievement is a testament to the importance of active ageing and participation in sport at all stages of life.
He said his department is committed to continuing to support athletes and encouraging older people to remain active.
'We salute Mosehla. Limpopo is proud and South Africa is inspired.'

Students showcase talent at LSEN schools tourney in Benoni
The Benoni Northerns Sports Club and St Dunstan's College fields were abuzz with excitement on August 8 as young soccer players from across Gauteng showcased their skills and passion at the annual Schools for Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN) Mild Intellectual Disability (MID) Schools tournament. With 33 U19 boys' teams and 20 U19 girls' teams competing, the event was a vibrant celebration of sport, inclusion, and determination, proving that talent knows no boundaries. Belvedere School and Daveyton Skills School represented Benoni. Springs' Olympia Park, Kwa-Thema Skills Schools, Kempton Park Panorama, JJ Masipa Technical School and Samson LSEN School represented Ekurhuleni. The tournament was held to select the teams to represent the province at the South African LSEN MID schools soccer week in September. 'We had South African football legends helping us identify the players for next month's soccer week hosted by the Western Cape, in Cape Town. Four teams will represent Gauteng – two boys' and two girls' teams,' said Gauteng LSEN MID Schools Football Association chairperson, Mpho Maseko. He said two teams will come from the combined Gauteng North and Ekurhuleni pools, while the others will be selected from players from the Gauteng West and South regions. 'We are the only province with multiple LSEN MID schools. The players will be selected from our four regions. Gauteng North and Ekurhuleni will have a boys' and girls' team, and we will also have two teams from the combined South and West regions,' he said. Besides this one-day tournament, the schools partake in a league divided into five regions. The winners of each region in the different age groups advance to the provincial knock-outs, with the overall winners going to represent Gauteng in the Noordvaal MID Schools Cup. Maseko added that the tournament was celebrating its 24th anniversary. 'This festival initially included rugby, cricket and netball because back then the MID schools were predominantly white. Football got involved in 2001 to involve the schools in the townships.' League general secretary Matsobane Mashishi said the competition gives the learners, often marginalised, a platform to express themselves without being stigmatised. 'It is a great day for our learners. They face lots of challenges. Some cannot even reveal to their peers which schools they attend to avoid being stigmatised. We are giving them a platform to be themselves. 'You can tell by the atmosphere that they are in a place where they feel welcomed, valued and appreciated. Local Olympic athlete targets ‘sneaky' podium finish at Absa Run Your City Tshwane 10K
Pretoria's Olympic marathon runner, Irvette van Zyl, will celebrate her Absa Run Your City Tshwane 10K debut on Sunday, 24 August 2025. Known for her fearless front-running, Van Zyl's participation adds an exciting local star presence to the Tshwane leg of South Africa's iconic road running series. After earning a gold medal on her Comrades Marathon debut in June, Van Zyl is shifting her focus to shorter distances as she works on regaining her 10km speed in the second half of 2025. The four-time Olympian has confirmed her entry for the Absa Run Your City Tshwane 10K, which forms part of her build-up towards a standard marathon later this year. Van Zyl, who impressively finished fourth at The Ultimate Human Race on 8 June, said she is feeling better than expected as she transitions back to faster-paced racing. 'The body was lekker eina after Comrades. It took four days to start walking normal again and then I only started running again after ten days of full rest. The first two weeks back was slow and my body just felt so fragile. But after that every week went better and better. I have had a good four weeks of introducing speed again and every session has been going better. I'm very pleased with where I am right now mentally and physically,' she said with a smile. The Hollywood Athletics Club ace demonstrated just how well her training has been going with an encouraging 34:42 to claim ninth position at the recent SPAR Women's 10km Challenge at SuperSport Park in Centurion. That performance in addition to the excitement of running her very first Absa Absa Run Your City Series race in her hometown, has left the 38-year-old bullish about the prospect of ending up on the podium on a hilly course which favours her strengths. 'I'm really excited to do this year's Absa Run Your City Tshwane 10K because last year I tore my hamstring post Olympics and I really wanted to do the race. I was entered but I had to make the call two days before not to run. But my husband LJ (Van Zyl) ran and he made me so jealous on the day because he had an amazing time on the roads. Being out there last year to see all the ladies run such good races motivated me. I'm really looking forward to being part of it this year and hopefully I can sneak in a top three position,' she remarked. Van Zyl's husband LJ who won a bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships over 400m hurdles, will also run again as he tries to break the 40 minute barrier. Irvette says this is what makes the race so special for the Van Zyls – it takes place right in their backyard and ends up being a memorable outing for the entire family. 'Seeing that Tshwane is my hometown, I don't even have to go anywhere. The race is on my front stoep. We'll see if we take the kids with because we did last year, but I wasn't running whereas this year both LJ and I are running. It's going to be a good day out, racing hard and soaking up the vibes. Tickets sold out for MTN8 semifinal second leg between Sundowns and Pirates
Tickets for the much-anticipated MTN8 semifinal second leg between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday (3pm) have sold out. The teams played out to a 1-1 draw at Orlando Stadium on Saturday but a winner must be produced this time around in Atteridgeville to determine which side qualifies for the final against Sekhukhune or Stellenbosch who play later that day. In the first leg, also played in front of a capacity crowd, Sundowns took an early lead through midfielder Teboho Mokoena but Pirates pulled one back in the closing stages from the effort of Kamogelo Sebelebele. They are not thinking about the crunch clash yet though because before then the Brazilians have a trip to Magesi FC at Seshego Stadium in Polokwane while the Buccaneers are at home to Stellenbosch FC, both on Wednesday.
