Ministry of Tourism Raises Tour Guide Fees This October

Starting in October, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities will increase the official fees paid to licensed tour guides, setting new minimum rates for their services.Tour guides working a full eight-hour day will earn EGP 1,800, while half-day shifts covering four consecutive hours will bring in EGP 1,100. These adjustments come after a previous rate update in 2023, when the full-day fee stood at EGP 1,000 and the half-day at EGP 600.
The government's directive is intended to be enforced through official channels, with penalties possible for tour operators or agencies that fail to comply. The decision was coordinated with key industry groups representing tour guides and travel companies.
Tourism remains central to Egypt's economy, contributing an estimated USD 32.2 billion in 2024, or about 8.1% of the country's GDP. Egypt also welcomed a record 15.7 million international visitors in 2024, a notable increase from the previous year.

Egypt's first e-training platform for tourism and antiquities has been launched In a further step towards digital transformation and human capacity building, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities launched this week the country's first-ever electronic training platform dedicated to tourism and antiquities, EGTAP. The initiative is designed to offer a wide range of accredited and professional training programmes to enhance the skills and competencies of workers, students, and researchers in both sectors. The platform also supports the ministry's broader strategy of building qualified human resources capable of keeping pace with global changes and the adoption of modern technology in service delivery. The EGTAP platform features a rich and dynamic content library, offering diverse training modules, workshops, and certification programmes. Developed in collaboration with top academic and industry experts, the courses are tailored to meet the evolving needs of the public and private sectors. They also include continuous assessments for both trainers and trainees to ensure effective learning outcomes. The platform will undergo regular updates with new training content to align with sector needs, including topics like sustainable tourism, food safety, marketing, management, and hospitality. It currently provides free online courses and will soon offer additional recorded programmes across various disciplines. Upon successful completion, participants receive accredited electronic certificates. 'Developing human capacity is a cornerstone of improving service quality and boosting the competitiveness of Egypt's tourism sector,' Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy said. 'EGTAP is a pivotal step in leveraging digital technology to strengthen Egypt's tourism and antiquities sectors,' said Mohamed Shaaban, assistant to the minister for digital services. He added that platform users can create personal profiles and enrol in training courses suited to their professional and educational backgrounds. He added that EGTAP as a cutting-edge response to the evolving training demands of the tourism sector. Developed in partnership with the Egyptian Tourism Federation and other specialised agencies, the platform combines academic rigour with practical relevance, catering to diverse professional backgrounds and expertise. Ahmed Rahima, assistant to the minister for human resources and head of the ministry's Central Training Unit, underscored that EGTAP not only delivers training but also supports career path development and equal access to skill-building opportunities. It offers specialised programmes in archaeology, museums, human development, scientific research, arts and architecture, civilisation and history, excavation sciences, and entrepreneurship. He said that the platform aligns with Egypt Vision 2030, particularly the focus on sustainable development and investing in human resources. Trump Fires BLS Commissioner after Disappointing Jobs Report
Taarek Refaat U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday dismissed Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Commissioner Erica MacEntarfer just hours after the release of a report showing a sharp slowdown in job growth during July. In a heated post on his Truth Social platform, Trump launched fresh criticism at Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and accused MacEntarfer, appointed under President Joe Biden, of manipulating employment data for political purposes. 'I was informed that our country's job numbers are being produced by a Biden political appointee, Erica MacEntarfer, who rigged the figures before the election to boost Kamala Harris's chances,' Trump wrote. 'We need accurate job numbers, and I have directed my team to fire this political appointee immediately. She will be replaced by someone with greater competence and experience.' NBC News confirmed that MacEntarfer has already been removed from her post. The BLS operates under the U.S. Department of Labor, currently headed by Trump appointee Lori Chavez-DeRemer. The abrupt decision came on the same day the BLS reported that the U.S. economy added just 73,000 nonfarm jobs in July, far below expectations. The agency also sharply revised down employment figures for the previous two months, eliminating a combined 258,000 jobs from earlier estimates. This brought the three-month average job growth to just 35,000, the weakest pace since April 2020. Trump and congressional Republicans have repeatedly criticized the BLS for what they describe as 'large and politically suspicious' revisions to employment data. In his current budget proposal, Trump called for an 8% reduction in the bureau's workforce, a move that raised concerns about the accuracy of its statistics on jobs, prices, and other key economic indicators. Beirut Port Sees Container Traffic Surge to Highest Monthly Level in More than 5 Years
Taarek Refaat Beirut Port has recorded its highest monthly container traffic since 2019, signaling a notable rebound in Lebanon's maritime trade activity after years of stagnation and crisis. According to a statement issued Friday by the Port of Beirut's Management and Investment Authority, container throughput in July reached approximately 100,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a 39% increase compared to the same month in 2024, when the figure stood at 72,000 TEUs. The authority credited the surge to improvements in operational infrastructure, streamlined logistics services, and the renewed confidence of global shipping lines. The port's container terminal is operated by CMA CGM, a leading French container transportation and shipping company. 'This level marks the highest container activity at the port since 2019, reaffirming Beirut's position as a key maritime hub in the Eastern Mediterranean,' the statement said. The increase in activity follows a turbulent period for Beirut Port, which was devastated by a massive explosion in August 2020 that killed over 200 people and destroyed large parts of the surrounding area. Recovery efforts in the years since have been slow, hampered by Lebanon's ongoing economic and political instability. However, port officials say a combination of strategic reforms, improved operational flow, and international partnerships have led to a renewed sense of optimism. Shipping companies have begun to reintroduce Beirut into their regular routes, a vote of confidence in the port's ability to handle cargo efficiently and securely. 'The port is working to further enhance the working environment and upgrade services to ensure this positive momentum continues,' the statement added. Beirut Port, alongside Rafic Hariri International Airport, remains one of Lebanon's most vital trade and logistics gateways.
