Indian stock market closes in green; auto and IT stocks gain

Hans India26-05-2025

The Indian stock market closed in the green on Monday as buying was seen across the sectors, especially in the auto and IT verticals. Benchmark indices commenced the week on a buoyant note, extending their upward trajectory for the second consecutive session.
At the end of trading, the Sensex was up 455.37 points or 0.56 per cent at 82,176.45 and the Nifty was up 148 points or 0.60 per cent at 25,001.15.
The rise was led by auto and IT stocks. Both Nifty Auto and Nifty IT index closed with a gain of one per cent each. Apart from this, buying was seen in metal, realty, media, energy, commodity and PSE indices.
Along with largecap, buying was also seen in midcap and smallcap. The Nifty Midcap 100 index was up 379.50 points, or 0.67 per cent, at 57,067.25, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index was up 64.45 points, or 0.37 per cent, at 17,707.80.
'The index formed a bullish candle with a higher high and higher low signalling continuation of the up move for the second session in a row as strong buying demand from the 20 days EMA. The bias remains positive and dips if any in the coming sessions should be used as buying opportunity as we expect index to head higher towards 25,300 levels in the coming sessions,' said Bajaj Broking Research in its note.
According to market watchers, the US decision to consider extending the deadline for imposing aggressive tariffs on EU, coupled with a decline in the dollar index, contributed to a rebound in the domestic equity markets.
These developments suggest that trade negotiations are progressing constructively, which could help moderate market volatility.
'Additionally, the early onset of the southwest monsoon and a decline in domestic bond yields have encouraged investors to maintain their focus on riskier assets. The broader market outperformed, driven by expectations of increased rural consumption and a stronger Q4 GDP, following better-than-anticipated corporate earnings for the quarter,' informed Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited.
Rupee traded higher by 24 paise to close at 85.09 against the US dollar, supported by continued weakness in the dollar index, which fell to 98.93.
'A series of key US economic data lined up this week including Durable Goods Orders, FOMC Meeting Minutes, Q1 GDP, and the Core PCE Price Index are expected to keep USD-INR volatility elevated. The rupee is likely to remain within a range of 84.50 to 85.25 in the near term,' said Jateen Trivedi from LKP Securities.

Rahul Gandhi cites fall in vehicle, mobile sales to criticise govt's ‘event-driven' politics

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday cited the drop in the sales of two-wheelers and cars as well as the fall in the mobile market to attack the government and said the country needs politics that is not about the glitz of events but connected with the reality of everyday life. The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha asserted that the country needs an economy that works for every Indian, not just for a select few capitalists. "The statistics tell the truth. In the last year, two-wheeler sales have fallen by 17 per cent and car sales by 8.6 per cent. The mobile market has fallen by 7 per cent. On the other hand, both expenses and debt are constantly increasing: house rent, domestic inflation, education expenses, almost everything is becoming expensive," Gandhi said in his post in Hindi on X. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo — RahulGandhi (@RahulGandhi) These are not just figures, but the reality of the economic pressure under which every common Indian is suffering, he said. The Congress has been attacking the government over its handling of the economy, alleging that issues like rising prices , decreasing private investment, and stagnating wages are hurting common people.

Swiggy may recover quick commerce share despite widening losses: Morgan Stanley

Brokerage house Morgan Stanley believes online food and grocery delivery company Swiggy 's quick commerce business has a bright future. This is despite the fact that while quick commerce has helped drive Swiggy 's revenue growth, the company's expenditure on the vertical continues to drag its bottom line down. Instamart , Swiggy's quick delivery business, saw its gross order value (GOV) rise 101 per cent year-on-year to Rs 4,670 crore. However, the adjusted Ebitda loss also increased to Rs 840 crore during the same period. Nevertheless, Morgan Stanley said in a recent note that Swiggy is well-equipped to weather the rising competition in the quick commerce segment with enough balance sheet strength to continue investing in the vertical. Initiating coverage on Swiggy shares, Morgan Stanley analysts Gaurav Rateria, Sulabh Govila and Sakshi Rana stated in the June 2 note that medium-term concerns about competition in quick commerce will persist. Multiple new players, including major ecommerce companies, are now entering the industry. Even so, Swiggy will be able to protect its relative market share, the analysts noted. Morgan Stanley has revised its estimates for quick commerce's total addressable market—representing the entire potential demand—upwards to USD 57 billion by 2030, from USD 42 billion earlier. The brokerage expects 150 Indian cities to be conducive to the service, compared to the top 30 cities now. This implies multifold growth in the USD 8 billion market seen at the end of March 2025. Existing companies with investments in infrastructure will benefit more from the quick commerce upsurge, the Morgan Stanley note read, and Swiggy has invested heavily in the space over the past 12 months. The company met its target of 1,000 dark stores, adding 316 of these micro-warehouses in the March quarter, and is looking to expand the network. "We believe that store additions will be a derivative of growth... we have made a choice of network where we have these megapods, which are two-and-a-half times larger than dark stores and these can do 5,000-6,000 orders per day compared to 2,000-3,000 orders a day (done by smaller dark stores)," Swiggy's chief financial officer Rahul Bothra had told ET after the March quarter results in May. Swiggy's current balance sheet strength and profit in food delivery will allow it to continue quick commerce investments and focus on at least maintaining market share, Morgan Stanley said. Total cumulative investment, in the form of operating losses or cash burn, in its quick commerce vertical is expected to be over USD 1.2 billion over the next two to three years before the company reaches break-even at the adjusted Ebitda level, the brokerage house said. Swiggy shares rose as much as 9.5 percent during trade today to Rs 365 apiece. The counter closed 8.73 percent higher at Rs 362.50 per share, against a 0.32 percent rise in the Sensex to 80,998.25.

Shein hit with complaint from EU consumer group over 'dark patterns'

Pan-European consumers organisation BEUC filed a complaint with the European Commission on Thursday against online fast-fashion retailer Shein over its use of "dark patterns", tactics designed to make people buy more on its app and website. Pop-ups urging customers not to leave the app or risk losing promotions, countdown timers that create time pressure to complete a purchase, and the infinite scroll on its app are among the methods Shein uses that could be considered "aggressive commercial practices", BEUC said in a report also published on Thursday. The BEUC also detailed Shein's use of frequent notifications, with one phone receiving 12 notifications from the app in a single day. "For fast fashion you need to have volume, you need to have mass consumption, and these dark patterns are designed to stimulate mass consumption," Agustin Reyna, director general of BEUC, said in an interview. "For us, to be satisfactory they need to get rid of these dark patterns, but the question is whether they will have enough incentive to do so, knowing the potential impact it can have on the volume of purchases." In a statement, Shein said: "We are already working constructively with national consumers authorities and the EU Commission to demonstrate our commitment to complying with EU laws and regulations." It added that the BEUC had not accepted its request for a meeting. Shein and rival online discount platform Temu have surged in popularity in Europe, partly helped by apps that encourage shoppers to engage with games and stand to win discounts and free products. The BEUC has also previously targeted Temu in a complaint. Shein's use of gamification, drawing shoppers to use the app regularly, has helped drive its success. In the "Puppy Keep" game on the app, users feed a virtual dog and collect points to win free items. They can gain more points by scrolling through the app, and by ordering items, but must log into the game every day or risk losing cumulative rewards. The BEUC noted that dark patterns are widely used by mass-market clothing retailers and called on the consumer protection network to include other retailers in its investigation. It said 25 of its member organisations in 21 countries, including France, Germany and Spain, joined in the grievance filed with the Commission and with the European consumer protection network. Late last month, the European Commission notified Shein of practices breaching EU consumer law and warned it would face fines if it failed to address the concerns. The company is also under scrutiny from EU tech regulators on how it complies with EU online content rules.
