Vince Himzon shows way as Letran stages Set 4 comeback to shock Benilde

Colegio de San Juan de Letran pulled itself up from four points down late in the fourth set to complete a 23-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-23 win against De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde in the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the FilOil Centre.
Two-time Best Middle Blocker and former Rookie of the Year Vince Himzon led the show with a team-high 21 points built on 18 attacks, two blocks, and one ace to help the Knights take the crucial win and improve to 10-6.
The Blazers saw their four-game winning streak come to an end to slip to 12-3, but still hold the second spot behind league-leading Mapua University.
Rocky Motol and James Marasigan led an early barrage of points for the Blazers in the fourth set as they threatened to drag the Knights to a deciding fifth frame with the latter bringing Benilde to a 22-18 cushion.
But Letran fought back behind Himzon, whose quick attack and ace tied the game at 22-all as he fueled a 4-0 run.
Marasigan went off the block on his hammer on the left wing to bring Benilde to a 23-22 lead. The Letran, though, answered with a 3-0 closing run to stun the Blazers, who are coming off fourth straight wins against EAC, San Sebastian, Arellano, and San Beda University.
Bembem Bautista started that rampage with a kill of his own before back-to-back attack errors from Kevin Ondevilla and Mike Balbacal sealed the win for the Knights.
Christer Ambrocio supplied the help with 12 points, six digs, and seven receptions while Bautista and Felix Bermido chipped in 11 and nine markers apiece.
The loss spoiled another huge outing from Motol, who posted 25 points and 23 receptions while Balbacal tallied 11 markers.

Decorated volleyball coach Roger Gorayeb has been tapped by Strong Group Athletics as a consultant for its girls' and women's volleyball programs. The group announced the development on Thursday, days after Capital1 appointed Gorayeb as consultant of the Solar Spikers as Jorge de Brito took over the head coaching job. According to SGA, Gorayeb will provide mentorship to student-athletes of teams backed by the organization such as the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the NCAA, and the University of the Philippines and University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP. 'Masaya ako kasi mayroon pa palang nagtitiwala sa akin,' Gorayeb said in a statement. 'Sobrang sarap sa feeling kasi hindi ako mawawala sa volleyball. Passion ko talaga magturo ng mga bata. Super saya.' SGA added Gorayeb is with the organization 'for as long as he can mentor our athletes." 'His wealth of experience and championship pedigree will be an incredible asset to all our teams, both on and off the court," Strong Group Volleyball head Kiara Cruz said. Marie Nitura on raising sports-minded children like Shaina, Judiel: 'They were born with grit'
Marie Nitura saw first hand her children's passion for sports take root at an early age and all she did is offer her support. Years later, her six children, all student-athletes, have fulfilled their sports dreams — and she is still supporting them in all their endeavors. The two eldest, Toni and Iñigo, previously suited up for the National University women's volleyball team and Rizal Technological University's basketball team, respectively. Third-born Cyrus, meanwhile, was previously with the Perpetual ALTAs and is now bringing his act to Mapua University where he is primed to be a huge part of the Cardinals' title defense come NCAA Season 101. Judiel, on the other hand, is currently part of Colegio de San Juan de Letran's women's volleyball squad, which recently booked a return ticket to the finals of NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball tournament. The young ones, Shaina and Lance, are also in the sports world with the former leading Adamson University women's volleyball team in UAAP and is part of the Alas Pilipinas women's team, while the latter is part of Perpetual Junior ALTAs that recently ruled the NCAA Season 100 juniors basketball contest. "They're born with a ball-heart. I think it's not me, it's divine intervention. Talagang they want ball, they want basketball, they want volleyball. Hindi siya ipinilit sa kanila, talagang hiningi nila," Marie shared to GMA News Online on Tuesday. "They saw it on TV and then they wanted it. Then ako, support na lang all throughout, super support. Bilang parent, whatever they want support ako and masuwerte lang ako na they want the sport." Marie admitted that raising six children who all share the same passion is a challenge for her, but she embraces it as part of motherhood, and seeing them succeed on their own makes every effort worthwhile. "They have different characteristics and attitudes different din naman. In some ways, ang meron lang sila na pareho ay 'yung passion, the heart, and the grit to excel," she added. Letran, Arellano aim to topple twice-to-beat Benilde, Mapua for NCAA men's volleyball finals tickets
NCAA Colegio de San Juan de Letran and Arellano University aim to topple twice-to-beat teams De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and Mapua University for tickets to the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball finals. Letran and Benilde will face off on Friday at 12:00 p.m., while Arellano and Mapua will battle at 2:30 p.m. at the Filoil Centre in San Juan. Last Sunday, the Knights swept the top-seeded Blazers, 25-17, 25-23, 25-23, with Bembem Bautista and Vince Himzon leading no. 4 team Letran. Letran head coach Bryan Esquibel said they will still rely on defense as they take on the Blazers anew. "Same pa rin ang magiging paghahanda natin, kailangan pa nating pagpursigihan ang net blocking and floor defense kasi doon manggagaling ang magandang atake and ma-minimize natin ang error." Esquibel said. Bautista had 17 points from 15 attacks and two blocks, while Himzon had 12 points. Benilde's top scorer Rocky Roy Motol, meanwhile, was limited to eight points then with John Austero posting a team-high 11 points. The third-seeded Chiefs, meanwhile, hope to return to the Finals for the first time since 2018. "Ang usapan namin sa training, ang mindset namin is one point at a time lang muna. Kung pupuntos kami, dapat trabahuhin namin," Arellano head coach Brian Vitug said. Before making a Finals return, the Chiefs need to beat the no. 2 team Cardinals first. In their Final Four match last Tuesday, Arellano defeated Mapua, 21-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-13. AC Guinto had 19 points, while Carl Berdal had 13 points in the crucial match. Jiwen Sinuto and Jake Pangilinan also came to the rescue for the Chiefs with 11 points apiece as Adrian Villados made all of Arellano's 19 excellent sets.
