Aviation Min reviews safety measures, passenger facilitation, airline performance

Hindustan Times8 hours ago

Mumbai, The Civil Aviation Ministry on Thursday conducted a comprehensive review of safety measures, passenger services, and airline performance in the wake of recent flight rescheduling due to multiple factors, such as post-accident checks and closing of certain airspaces amid geopolitical tension, an official release said.
The ministry also said it remains committed to full transparency relating to the ongoing investigation and will follow all mandated protocols and norms in the larger interest of the highest standards of passenger Safety and convenience.
The meeting came in the backdrop of the London-bound Air India flight AI171 carrying 242 passengers and crew members crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12. All but one on board the plane died, along with 29 on the ground when the aircraft smashed into a medical complex in the Meghaninagar area of the city shortly after its take-off.
At the meeting, conducted virtually to review ground-level preparedness and passenger support mechanisms with all airport directors and chaired by Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu, a close liaison with airlines was emphasised to ensure passenger issues are addressed swiftly, the release said.
Naidu also held a high-level meeting with the Chairman and Managing Director of Air India, it said.
At the comprehensive review meeting, it was also directed that availability of food, drinking water, and adequate seating facilities at terminals must be ensured, particularly during flight delays or congestion and that sufficient personnel must be deployed at key touch points to manage passenger grievances proactively, it added.
The airport directors were requested to extend all possible assistance to airlines facing operational disruptions, including gate reassignments and logistical support, it said, adding that to maintain a safe and secure airport environment, they were directed to reinforce wildlife hazard management, including the deterrence of birds and stray animals.
During the meeting, it was noted that due to the evolving situation in the Middle East, enhanced safety checks, and a ban on night flying in Europe, Air India is facing reduced aircraft availability.
As a result, Air India will temporarily scale down operations, restructure flights, and announce changes through the media, it said.
Affected passengers will be rebooked or offered full refunds, while Air India was urged to strengthen their ground-level coordination at airports, improve communication with passengers regarding cancellations/delays, and ensure that customer service teams are sensitised and equipped to handle increased passenger concerns with empathy and clarity, the release said.
The government also said the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has commenced a formal inquiry into the Air India flight crash near Ahmedabad.
The AAIB investigation is progressing steadily with all necessary support from local authorities and agencies, it said, adding that key recovery work, including site documentation and evidence collection, has been completed, and further analysis is now underway.
A multi-disciplinary team from AAIB commenced the investigation on June 12, 2025.
A combined unit of the Digital Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder was recovered from the crash site on June 13, and another set was found on June 16.
This model of aircraft has two black box sets, it said.
The release also said that meetings were also held with the senior management of Spice Jet, Indigo and Akasa on June 18 and 19, during which the minister reviewed the fleet performance, safety oversight, passengers experience and convenience, and the airline communication strategy.

Omar Abdullah lauds Vande Bharat train experience, says will consider

Samba (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 19 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah praised the Vande Bharat Express after travelling on the newly launched Katra-Srinagar route on Thursday, calling the high-speed train the 'best way' to commute between Srinagar and Jammu. The CM said he would soon speak to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw about increasing the frequency or capacity of the train to meet high demand on the route. 'The journey was very good. The train is excellent, and these days, if you have to come quickly from Srinagar to Jammu or vice versa, there is no better way than this. Secondly, it will definitely impact tourism. The demand is so much that as per what I am hearing, it has become very difficult to get tickets in this train for the next 1 month,' Omar Abdullah said. 'After speaking to Railway Minister Ashwini ji, we will see if we can increase the frequency of this train or the carriages in this train, because the demand is very high. Now, to meet the demand, we will have to take some steps immediately,' he added. CM Abdullah also reviewed preparations for the Amarnath Yatra and upcoming Muharram, assuring that the administration is fully geared up. 'Today, I reviewed the situation in Jammu regarding the summers. I especially asked about the arrangements for the Amarnath Yatra and Muharram. All the preparations have been done from our side. Now we are waiting for the pilgrims and hope that their Yatra is comfortable.' Addressing the recent Air India plane crash, Abdullah urged restraint and patience while investigations are ongoing. 'Accountability will be fixed. Who said accountability will not be fixed? Right now, we do not know how the plane crashed. We should wait. Both the black boxes have been found. An inquiry has been set up...' The Chief Minister also welcomed the return of tourists to Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in Kashmir Valley and Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine. 'I want to thank all the tourists who have started coming back to Jammu and Kashmir and especially Kashmir. Similarly, the number of pilgrims who stopped visiting Mata Vaishno Devi immediately after Pahalgam has also increased. Similarly, the trend of tourism is increasing in Kashmir...,' he said. The Vande Bharat Express operating on the newly launched Katra-Srinagar route is witnessing overwhelming demand from passengers, with bookings full for the next 10 days, according to railway authorities. Earlier last week, National Conference Chief Farooq Abdullah travelled in the Vande Bharat train and paid obeisance at the Maa Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra. Farooq Abdullah said that he had a 'good darshan' at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and that he prayed for prosperity and brotherhood in the region. (ANI)

New lab, old problem: India's new Rs 9 crore black box lab fails first big test, as govt plans to send Air India crashed plane black box to US

PTI Remains of the crashed Air India plane lie on a building, in Ahmedabad. Just two months after inaugurating a state-of-the-art laboratory for analysing aircraft black boxes, the Indian government has decided to send the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder from the recent Air India crash to the United States for decoding. The move highlights limitations in India's newly launched facility, which was expected to handle such critical investigations. The black box, retrieved from the crashed Air India Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, has been sent to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's (AAIB) Digital Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder (DFDR & CVR) Laboratory in New Delhi. In April, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu inaugurated the DFDR & CVR Laboratory at the AAIB headquarters in New Delhi. Built with an investment of Rs 9 crore and technical support from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the facility was designed to recover flight data and conduct detailed crash aimed to meet international standards and enable India to independently analyse black boxes without sending them abroad. The lab is expected to reduce dependency on foreign agencies and improve the speed of investigations. The new lab is in the process of decoding the data from black boxes.. Officials said, 'AAIB experts attempted to retrieve the data but found that the extent of damage to the recorders necessitates more sophisticated equipment.' The recorders may be sent to the US-based National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) for data recovery. A team from the NTSB will handle the transport under Indian supervision to ensure proper chain of custody, if a decision is taken to send them to US. The United Kingdom's Air Accidents Investigation Branch will also be involved in the investigation, as 53 British citizens were among the passengers killed. Experts handling the recovery process will attempt to extract the memory board chip and inspect the damaged circuitry. This is a delicate operation, and any mistake could result in permanent data loss. Black boxes, which include the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), are essential tools for accident investigation. The FDR logs flight details such as altitude, speed, and engine data, while the CVR captures cockpit audio and commercial aircraft like the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, these devices are located in the tail section to increase chances of survival during crashes. They are built to withstand high-impact crashes and extreme fast-growing aviation sector relies heavily on timely and thorough investigations to improve safety standards. The inability of the newly opened AAIB lab to handle this case has raised questions about its readiness to deal with complex crash scenarios.
