Rowena Fire continues burning overnight, I-84 reopens
Burning 2,500 acres and currently 0% contained, the fire was first reported just after 1:30 Wednesday, leading to evacuations in the surrounding area.
Level 3 'Go Now' evacuations: Rowena Ferry Road east to River Road. Seven Mile Hill Road to Mountain View Drive; south to Chenowith Creek and Browns Creek roads, east to West Seventh Street.
Level 2 'Be Set' evacuations: Evacuation Snipes Street, West to Chenoweth Loop Road, Chenowith Creek Road, to Browns Creek Road.
Level 1 'Be Ready' evacuations: Snipes St, east to River Rd, south to Bargeway Rd., west to I-84; From the intersection of Seven Mile Hill Rd, east to Browns Creek Rd, East to Snipes St. to Cherry Heights Rd, south to Browns Creek Rd, Port area of The Dalles.
The fire is threatening hundreds of homes in the area, and authorities said that 20 residences have already been destroyed.
The fire even led Oregon Governor Tina Kotek to invoke the Emergency Conflagration Act, calling in six state fire teams to back up local crews.
'It's an unfortunate reality that we have to live with, and they seem to be getting more and more frequent, a little bit earlier and quite often more intense,' said John Gass, a retired firefighter.
The Red Cross has opened a shelter at The Dalles Middle School and the Wasco County Fairgrounds in Tygh Valley is allowing in livestock and horses affected by the fire.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.

The Mendenhall River near Alaska's capital of Juneau crested at a record level Wednesday morning after a glacial outburst sent water filled with debris rushing downstream and into communities, forcing residents to evacuate and seek higher ground. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Juneau, the Mendenhall River crested at 16.65 feet – which makes this event the largest glacial lake outburst flooding event on record. Last year's event, which took place between Aug. 3 and Aug. 6, was the previous record when the river crested at 15.99 feet. Before the flooding took place, officials had recommended people living within the 17-foot lake-level inundation zone evacuate to higher ground until the water fully receded and an 'All Clear' message was sent out via the Wireless Emergency Alert system. The Red Cross also opened a shelter at a local gymnasium where evacuated residents could stay until conditions improved. Several facilities had also been closed because of the anticipated flooding, including the Mendenhall Valley Public Library, Diamond Park Field House, Diamond Park Aquatic Center and all nearby fields. 7 This image provided by Samuel E. The NWS said mariners should be aware that numerous trees and other debris were in the water and were being washed downstream. 'There is a lot of debris in the river. Please stay away from the river. It's very dangerous right now,' said Andrew Park, a meteorologist at the NWS office in Juneau said. 'If you get in that water, you're not going to make it out of there. So, please, remain away from the river.' 7 Water levels dropping within Suicide Basin in Alaska after a glacial lake outburst between Aug. 9 through Aug. 12. NOAA Suicide Basin is a side basin of the Mendenhall Glacier above Juneau. Since 2011, the NWS said Suicide Basin has released glacial lake outburst floods that caused inundation along Mendenhall Lake and River annually. Prior to this event, the last release occurred on Oct. 20, 2024. What is a glacial lake outburst flood? A glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) isn't like the typical type of flooding that occurs from torrential rain and thunderstorms. According to the USGS, glacial lakes form in small side valleys that have lost ice and then become dammed by the glacier in the main valley or dammed by rocks and debris. Over time, as the ice-free basins fill with water, the USGS said, lakes reach a breaking point where water pressure opens up a drain underneath the glacier that releases the water downstream, which can result in a GLOF. 'These events are unpredictable and have caused significant loss of life and infrastructure worldwide,' the USGS said. 'Furthermore, it is unclear how these lake hazards may change as temperatures rise and glaciers continue to melt.'

Major flooding forces evacuations in Alaska
A glacial outburst has sparked emergency evacuations in Juneau, Alaska, as the Mendenhall River is expected to reach record levels and cause major flooding. In a Tuesday Facebook post, Juneau officials announced, 'A glacial outburst has occurred at Suicide Basin. The basin is releasing and flooding is expected along Mendenhall Lake and River late Tuesday through Wednesday. Residents are advised to evacuate the potential flood inundation area.' Officials warned residents in the '17ft lake level inundation zone' to 'evacuate the area until the flood waters recede and an 'All Clear' message is sent via the Wireless Emergency Alert system and/or CBJ Alerts.' In Tuesday's post, Juneau officials told Alaskan residents not to go near the Mendenhall River and warned, 'Approaching the river during a flood warning endangers yourself and first responders and interferes with residents evacuating.' Officials also confirmed that a Red Cross shelter had been established for Alaskan residents at Floyd Dryden Gymnasium. During a news conference on Tuesday, meteorologist Nicole Ferrin warned that the expected flooding would be a 'new record.' 'The closure will remain in effect until water levels recede below 12 feet and bridge engineers complete a safety inspection,' officials stated. The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities also announced that the Federal Aviation Administration issued a temporary flight restriction over part of the Mendenhall River due to the flooding. Officials explained that the temporary flight restriction 'creates controlled airspace to ensure safe aerial operations for geo-hazard monitoring, flood response, and potential evacuations.' On Tuesday afternoon, the National Weather Service's Juneau office issued a flood warning for the region and warned that the forecasted crest of the flooded river was expected to be 16.6 feet high by Wednesday afternoon. According to Fox Weather, National Weather Service Juneau Meteorologist Andrew Park warned that in addition to the danger presented by the flood waters, the debris in the Mendenhall River presents another danger for Alaskan residents. 'There is a lot of debris in the river. Please stay away from the river. It's very dangerous right now,' Park warned. 'If you get in that water, you're not going to make it out of there. So, please, remain away from the river.'

Burdoin, Snyder Canyon fires continue burning in Klickitat County
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two fires in Klickitat County, Wash., continue to burn Thursday as crews seek to close gaps in fire lines to prevent further spread. According to fire officials, on Wednesday, crews closed the ; however, they said it will still take time to contain the fire fully. Currently, the Burdoin Fire is listed at 11,248 acres and 13% contained. Trump approves FEMA funds for flood-hit Oregon communities To the northeast of the Burdoin Fire, the Snyder Canyon Fire, which broke out along Brewer Road Wednesday afternoon, continues burning, covering around 52 acres. On Thursday morning, officials said that the Complex Incident Management Team Northwest 13, which is in command of the Burdoin Fire, also assumed command of the Snyder Canyon Fire. Fire officials now confirm this fire has destroyed more than 40 structures. 'There are 44 structures, unofficially, that we were able to identify that were lost in the fire footprint,' Northwest 13 incident commander Brian Gales. One woman, Linda, told KOIN 6 News she watched her neighbors' house in Lyle burn from across the hill. 'Right above that was the Wilson's property; that was a life home for a guy here in town,' she said. With bags packed, Linda says for now she and her husband are staying put despite being some of the dozens under Level 3 'Go Now' evacuation orders. 'It's not devastating to us, but for some many people it is devastating, because it came so fast up Highway 8 they didn't have time,' Linda said. 'A few people did stay and save their homes but a lot were in danger.' From hand crews to engine teams and aviation assets, officials say 900 firefighters are working together to minimize the footprint and damage. There are two Red Cross emergency shelters — one at Grace Baptist Church in White Salmon and the other at the Dalles Middle School. All evacuations for both fires remain in place; evacuation maps for the Burdoin and Snyder Canyon fires are available online. Highway 14 still remains closed in the area of the Burdoin Fire.
