2 siblings succumb to injuries sustained in CNG cylinder blast in Northeast Delhi

Indian Express2 days ago

A day after three minor siblings sustained severe burn injuries in a CNG cylinder blast at a godown in Northeast Delhi's Sunder Nagri area, two of them succumbed during treatment Sunday.
According to the Delhi Police, they are conducting raids to nab the accused.
The police said the explosion took place at around 4.33 pm Saturday at the godown, leaving the three children, and a worker with severe burn injuries. The police said that the blast took place during a repair operation inside the godown, which was reportedly being used to store and repair old CNG cylinders.
Initial reports indicate that the CNG cylinders were stored on the ground floor of a four-storey residential building. One of the cylinders exploded during repair work, leading to the injuries.
The impact of the explosion was such that it shattered the iron gate of the premises, injuring three brothers, Raja, 3, Sakib, 7, and Abbas, 9, who were playing outside. The worker, identified as Arshad, 22, suffered major burn injuries. All four injured were rushed to GTB Hospital for urgent medical care.
Doctors at the GTB Hospital said the three children sustained critical burns, with Sakib suffering 90 per cent burns, Abbas 85 per cent, and Raja 85 per cent. Arshad suffered approximately 70 per cent burns, they added.
Following the blast, two fire tenders were dispatched to the spot by the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) to prevent further damage and ensure safety.
Videos from the Delhi Fire Services showed the ground floor godown containing the Compressed Natural Gas cylinders. An iron gate, which originally provided an entryway into the godown, can be seen several feet away from the building after the blast.
The police said Crime and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) teams are examining the site to ascertain the exact cause and circumstances of the incident. 'Legal action has been initiated against the owner of the godown, and further investigation is underway,' said a police officer.

North-east Delhi riots case: repeated judicial reshuffles delay trial

NEW DELHI Five years after the north-east Delhi riots of 2020, which left 53 dead and over 700 injured, the trial in the 'larger conspiracy' case will begin afresh due to a recent judicial reshuffle in the Capital's lower courts. On June 2, the case was listed for arguments on charges. The court was informed that the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) had completed his submissions, and five accused had also argued on the point of charge. However, the matter will now restart under Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Lalit Kumar, following the transfer of ASJ Sameer Bajpai.The latest reshuffle, involving the transfer of 135 judges, marks another setback in one of Delhi's most high-profile trials. 'Since the court has been transferred, the prosecution and the accused persons and their counsels seek some time to consult with each other regarding the time frame to address the arguments,' said ASJ Kumar, while directing all parties to submittheir time estimates for arguments by June 6. Originally filed by Delhi Police's Special Cell in 2020, the case invokes provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), among others. Key accused include Tahir Hussain, student activists Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi, Ishrat Jahan, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Saleem Malik, Mohd. Saleem Khan, Athar Khan, Safoora Zargar, Sharjeel Imam, Faizan Khan, and Natasha Narwal, among others. After months of delay in the probe, the chargesheetwas filed in June 2023, and arguments began in 2024 before Judge Bajpai. Prior to him, the case was heard for months by ASJ Amitabh Rawat, who was transferred last year. With Judge Kumar now assigned to the case, both prosecution and defence teams are expected to resubmit their argument timelines and reconvene on June 6. The court is likely to push for a time-bound hearing to avoid delays.

New Delhi: A Delhi court will hear fresh arguments on charges in the northeast Delhi riots larger conspiracy case following transfer of judges. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The next hearing of the matter is scheduled for June 6. The special public prosecutor informed the court that the prosecution has already completed its arguments, and even five accused persons have completed their arguments on the point of charge. "This court considers it fit that a considerable time has already lapsed, and therefore, arguments on the point of charge have to be expedited. Since the court has been transferred, the prosecution and the accused persons and their counsels seek some time to consult with each other regarding the time frame to address the arguments," the judge said. The FIR in the case was registered in 2020 by Delhi Police's Special Cell. Arguments on charge began last year and were being heard by additional sessions judge Sameer Bajpai. However, an administrative order was published by Delhi High Court on May 30, notifying the transfer of 135 judges, including Bajpai. This new development means that the prosecution will again take Kumar through all the relevant documents, including the 17,000-page chargesheet. The arguments will be reheard by Kumar. The accused in the case are Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Safoora Zargar, Natasha Narwal, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Tahir Hussain, Khalid Saifi, Isharat Jahan, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Saleem Malik, Mohd Saleem Khan, Athar Khan and Faizan Khan. Delhi Police has invoked stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against them. Most of the accused have been in jail for more than five years.

Delhi Police busts sextortion, cyberfraud rackets, 6 held

New Delhi, Jun 3 (PTI) The Delhi Police has busted a sextortion and cyber fraud racket, spanning across multiple states, and have arrested six people in the case, officials said on Tuesday. According to the police, a money trail of over Rs 5 crore has been identified by different teams of Crime Branch. 'On May 24, a tip-off was received regarding the movement of a consignment suspected to contain synthetic bank account kits in New Ashok Nagar area. These kits were reportedly being used in various high-tech crimes such as sextortion, cyber fraud, banking scams, debit/credit card cloning, etc," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Aditya Gautam said. It was found that the kits were to be delivered and distributed near the Mayur Vihar Phase-1 Extension. A team was formed and an operation was carried out, following which three people, who were in possession of the consignment, were arrested, the DCP said. 'The accused were identified as Ujjawal Pandey (30), Gaurav Barua (24) and Yug Sharma (19). Synthetic bank account kits, pre-activated SIM cards, forged bank documents, debit/credit cards linked to dummy or fraudulent accounts, and mobile devices for real-time transaction control were recovered from them," the DCP said. These items collectively formed called synthetic financial identity allowing cybercriminals to operate untraceable, modular shadow banking systems. Later, a raid was conducted at their instance at an illegal call centre involved in fraudulent bank loan schemes which was functioning in Mundka and seven people were apprehendedm, the DCP added. Among the apprehended individuals, Dilshad Ali emerged as a key operative. Investigations revealed that Ali, along with his associate Amit, was running a fake call centre providing bank loans. Ali acted as the team leader, while Amit, who is absconding, was identified as the owner of the operation. Amit's role involved the procurement and facilitation of fraudulent bank accounts and fake SIM cards, which were further handed over to Ali for use in the scam. The modus operandi of the call centre was to defraud people by offering fake bank loans. Initially, the callers under Ali's direction contacted potential victims offering them attractive loan deals. After gaining the victim's trust, the caller would request identification and other personal documents. The victim was then asked to make a payment through a QR code scanner, under the pretext of file processing fees, said the DCP. After the payment was received, the victim's follow-up messages and calls were ignored. The fraudsters would then switch off their mobile devices and change their contact numbers, effectively cutting off all communication. During investigation, another raid conducted in the New Ashok Nagar area where four other accused were apprehended and an organised sextortion racket was busted, DCP Gautam said. They would send friend requests on social media and obtain victim's mobile number. Later, they would initiate a video call, during which they would stream obscene videos, secretly recording the victim's screen and reactions using screen recording tools. The recorded content was then used to blackmail the victim under threats of publicly circulating the video on social media platforms, thereby coercing them into transferring money, the DCP said. Further investigation in the matter is underway, police added. PTI BM HIG First Published: June 03, 2025, 19:45 IST
