Veteran's house struck by lightning causes ceiling to cave in

Yahoo5 days ago

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An Air Force veteran's house was struck by lightning in Bartlett while he was out of town.
Willie Hooper's home was struck by lightning during Sunday's severe weather in Shelby County.
The 62-year-old told WREG he was on his way to visit his daughter in Ohio, and he started to feel ill so he stopped in Kentucky.
'I could not see my cameras that I have on my house. They were not working,' said Hooper. 'So, I talked to my neighbor and she said she has power and she didn't know the issue was, so I called my son and then I called MLGW.'
At first, Hooper says he thought someone maybe cut the security system and broke into his house.
'And soon as we walked upstairs, I see the ceiling kind of caved in,' said Willie Hopper Jr., son. 'The guy from MLGW was behind me he kind of looked over my shoulder and said 'We got the answer, we know what the culprit is.''

The technician determined the damage was caused by a lightning strike to the roof. Hooper said he was thankful he was not home.
'There was definitely a point where the boom and the flash happened at exactly the same time. We were watching TV and it startled us all,' said his neighbor.
'Where it hit is where my computer is at, and that is exactly where I normally sit,' said Willie Hooper. 'So I think it's a thing that God is trying to tell me something.'
Hooper is headed back to Bartlett to check on the damage to his house. The Bartlett Fire Department told WREG they did not respond to Hooper's home because they were not called for assistance.

Russia shatters drone record, launches 472 UAVs at Ukraine night before Kyiv's strike on Russian airfields

Russia launched a record number of drones at Ukraine in a mass overnight aerial attack, Ukraine's Air Force reported the morning of June 1. Russia attacked Ukraine during the night with 472 Shahed-type attack drones, breaking its previous record — set just last week on May 26 — by over 100 drones. In addition to nearly 500 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), Moscow also targeted Ukraine with three Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles and four Kh-101, Iskander-K air and ground-based cruise missiles, the Air Force said. Ukrainian air defense units shot down 210 drones, while another 172 were suppressed by electronic warfare, according to the Air Force. Russian drones were intercepted in 18 different locations across the country. The record-shattering drone attack came on the eve of Ukraine's "Operation Spider Web" — a major strike on Russia's military airfields coordinated by Ukraine's Security Service (SBU). The operation hit 41 Russian bombers at four airfields, according to the SBU. The attack, planned for over a year, involved smuggling first-person-view (FPV) drones deep into Russia. The operation caused approximately $7 billion in damages and disabled 34% of cruise missile carriers in key Russian air bases, the SBU reported. Ukraine's strike on Russia's military aircraft follows some of Moscow's heaviest aerial bombardments since the beginning of the full-scale war. For three nights in a row from May 24-26, Russia barraged Ukraine with drones and missiles, launching a record 298 drones on May 25 only to break the record with 355 the following night. The escalating attacks form the backdrop against which Ukrainian and Russian delegations prepare for their second round of direct peace talks, scheduled for June 2 in Istanbul. The Kremlin has claimed it will submit a memorandum outlining its ceasefire conditions during the meeting — though previous promises to present terms have been followed by weeks of delays. The first round of talks, held May 16, failed to produce any significant breakthroughs towards a peace settlement. Russia continues to reject calls for an unconditional ceasefire. Witness says he tried to help victims involved in I-40 crash

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A day after a deadly multi-car crash, a witness told WREG that he tried to help victims. Memphis Police said that five vehicles were involved in the wreck on I-40 and N. Hollywood around 3:30 on Saturday afternoon. Officials said that while vehicle #1 was traveling westbound on I-40 W and struck the rear of vehicle #2, which was also traveling westbound on I-40. That caused vehicle #2 to strike the rear of vehicle #3 and vehicle #3 struck the rear of vehicle #4. Vehicle #4 then struck the rear trailer of vehicle #5. The wreck led to all westbound lanes of the interstate being shut down for hours. A WREG reporter spoke with a man who said he's an Army reservist and has trained for casualty situations. MPD: Three killed in I-40 multi-car accident After seeing the crash, he pulled over to help a woman try to break a window of a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was involved. He described to WREG what happened next. 'I go to the driver's side and I'm able to pull the driver out and I unbuckle the passenger but by the time I get over there the car is already going up in flames and another bystander passes me a fire extinguisher and we try to use that to put the fire out but it's not enough,' he said. 'I just want to offer my condolences to the family, I feel really bad for the family and all the loss they're going through in such a short amount of time.' Police told us a fourth person was also hospitalized, but should be okay. WREG has reached out to investigators for more information about what happened. We will update this story when more information becomes available. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Data says there have been 17 homicides in Frayser this year

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The investigation into the death of a man outside a Frayser shopping center continues. Now, Memphis Police are asking for the public's help to bring the suspect to justice. 'It's getting worse. It's going to get worse,' a Frayser resident said. People working at the Frayser Village Shopping Center on Frayser Boulevard went about their Sunday morning as usual. However, some employees WREG spoke with said they are still processing the events that happened the day before. Memphis Police said a man was shot and killed. The brazen attack has customers and people living nearby talking. Those WREG spoke with did not want to go on camera for their own safety. Man killed in Frayser shooting 'I said, 'Did the security guard shoot him?' I thought maybe he was stealing,' a resident said. 'They said, 'No. It was another person who shot him.' And you know that's a norm out here.' Surveillance video viewed by WREG showed a man leaving a tobacco store. Suddenly, a man wearing a black hoodie and a ski mask appears, shoots the victim and runs off. Police said that the suspect fled in a silver late-model sedan. All of this took place in broad daylight while the parking lot was packed with unsuspecting shoppers. 'Don't nobody care who they shoot,' a resident said. 'They just shooting.' We spoke with a woman who works at a nearby business, who said she's still traumatized by the act of violence. She said she even tried to help the victim, but it was too late. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Man hospitalized after Frayser shooting This shooting comes after a violent start to the year in the Frayser community. According to the City of Memphis Safer Communities dashboard, there have been 248 aggravated assaults and 17 murders in the 38127 zip code this year. Just hours after the shopping center shooting, another man was shot in the 3700 block of Donna Drive, only two miles away. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and one person was detained. People WREG spoke with said they fear the violence is only going to get worse. 'You can't say more police because they're out here. They are out here,' a resident said. 'You see them all day long, but it's like they don't care about the police. They don't even care about going to jail.' Police said the Frayser Boulevard shooting is an ongoing investigation. If you have any information about either shooting, you are encouraged to contact Crimestoppers at 901-528-CASH. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
