MLGW calls NAACP claims ‘patently false,' requests apology
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Light Gas & Water responded Monday to the NAACP, which claimed last week that xAI's operations in southwest Memphis are endangering the health of nearby residents. A letter sent by NAACP to both MLGW and the county health department accused those entities of looking the other way as xAI ran gas turbines to help power its Colossus supercomputer in southwest Memphis, and of violating open meetings laws. NAACP pens letter calling for end of xAI supercomputer The response letter sent Monday by MLGW President and CEO Doug McGowen says those claims are 'patently false.' McGowen says MLGW has no role in approving the use of gas turbines and undertook an impact study to ensure that the xAI facility would not impact service to other utility customers. City officials including the mayor have previously said the number of gas turbines at the site was lower than what environmental groups claimed, and on May 6, the chamber of commerce announced the turbines would be removed. McGowen's letter went on to request an apology from the civil rights organization over what it called 'baseless, inflammatory claims.' Read the letter below. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Veteran's house struck by lightning causes ceiling to cave in
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An Air Force veteran's house was struck by lightning in Bartlett while he was out of town. Willie Hooper's home was struck by lightning during Sunday's severe weather in Shelby County. The 62-year-old told WREG he was on his way to visit his daughter in Ohio, and he started to feel ill so he stopped in Kentucky. 'I could not see my cameras that I have on my house. They were not working,' said Hooper. 'So, I talked to my neighbor and she said she has power and she didn't know the issue was, so I called my son and then I called MLGW.' At first, Hooper says he thought someone maybe cut the security system and broke into his house. 'And soon as we walked upstairs, I see the ceiling kind of caved in,' said Willie Hopper Jr., son. 'The guy from MLGW was behind me he kind of looked over my shoulder and said 'We got the answer, we know what the culprit is.'' MPD arrests over 120 people in Operation Code Zero The technician determined the damage was caused by a lightning strike to the roof. Hooper said he was thankful he was not home. 'There was definitely a point where the boom and the flash happened at exactly the same time. We were watching TV and it startled us all,' said his neighbor. 'Where it hit is where my computer is at, and that is exactly where I normally sit,' said Willie Hooper. 'So I think it's a thing that God is trying to tell me something.' Hooper is headed back to Bartlett to check on the damage to his house. The Bartlett Fire Department told WREG they did not respond to Hooper's home because they were not called for assistance. Parkway Village residents still without power after storms
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Cleanup continues in sections of Parkway Village after a strong storm brought trees down and knocked out power for a number of MLGW customers. WREG has been told that power has been restored to most everyone impacted by the outage. However, some may have to wait a bit longer if a device on their home called a 'weather head or weather cap' is damaged. It's still a steady rainfall in Parkway Village as folks try to get their lives back to normal following Sunday's storm. Crews work to clear debris from Sunday's storm It's been frustrating for those with severe damage to their homes and those still left without power. 'We were just in the house and all of a sudden a wind came through,' Mable Pride said. 'The trees were bending and everything falling, and I was like, 'What's going on?' Pride was sitting in the middle of a proverbial 'Ground Zero' during Sunday's storm that caused damage to homes on several streets in Parkway Village, including trees coming down and power being knocked out. 'I was so busy looking at all this, I didn't really hear the branch when it hit our house,' she said. 'It didn't do no real damage except it knocked a wire down in the back.' However, the problem is that the wire is running into a fixture on Pride's roof called a 'weather head or weather cap', a device that protects the point where overhead wires enter a home or building. Pride's power went out, so she called MLGW. '[Memphis] Light, Gas and Water been out twice and they've told us we got to get the connection to our house fixed,' she said. MLGW is responsible for repairing electrical wires leading to your home or building, not repairing or replacing a 'weather head or weather cap.' That must be done by a licensed electrician and inspected by Code Enforcement before power can be restored by MLGW. Trees uprooted in Parkway Village neighborhood 'That's why we've got to get an electrician before our power can get back on,' Pride said. 'This is a holiday. So, how are we going to do that? But, we're going to have to work on it.' She told WREG that Sunday's storm was the most violent she's been through in a while. 'Every time it rained, we used to have a blackout, but they came out here and fixed up stuff. So, we stopped having blackouts,' Pride said. 'This is the only one we've had in the last couple of years or so.' MLGW stresses to residents that they should never attempt to make electrical repairs to their home, especially if the damage involves downed power lines. Any downed power lines should be treated as 'live' and considered dangerous to touch. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Construction on $30M MLGW project begins in South Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Construction on a $30 million Memphis Light, Gas & Water pipeline has begun in South Memphis. MLGW announced on social media that the Weaver-Gill Pipeline is a 5.4-mile project will run from Gill Road in Barton Heights to Weaver Road. MLGW said that in the weeks ahead, residents will see notices about road and sidewalk closures and other related information. The Weaver-Gill Project is a $30 million modernization project that MLGW said is intended to 'improve the pipeline distribution of natural gas in South Memphis.' Organizers ensure safety and fun at Bluff City Fair The new pipeline is supposed to be in service by October. The new 24-foot high-pressure distribution pipeline replaces two 18-foot extra high-pressure gas transmission pipelines that had been in operation since 1929 and 1940, respectively. Those lines were shut down and gas was removed on April 17. MLGW said that the project will impact several streets and be in close proximity to homes and businesses. However, customers will not experience an interruption of gas service. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
