Scientists have used artificial intelligence to design custom proteins that act like a 'GPS' for the immune system, guiding T cells directly to cancer cells and helping them destroy tumors with remarkable precision. The new research, published Thursday(July 24) in the journal Science, demonstrates how generative AI can create tiny proteins that dramatically enhance the cancer-killing power of human immune cells. In lab tests, T cells outfitted with these proteins swiftly located and killed melanoma cells, a fast-spreading and often deadly form of skin cancer.'It's like giving immune cells Google Maps for cancer,' said lead researcher Dr. Timothy Jenkins, a medical biotechnologist at the Technical University of Denmark. 'We're helping T cells find the tumor much more efficiently than they could on their own.'The work is an early-stage form of immunotherapy, a treatment approach that boosts the body's natural defenses to fight disease. The idea builds on successful techniques like CAR T-cell therapy but adds a major twist: Instead of relying on naturally occurring cell receptors, which can take months to isolate and test, the scientists used AI to design new proteins from scratch in just days. The use of AI toolsTo create the molecular guides, the researchers used three AI tools. First, a generative model called RFdiffusion was used to analyze the structure of a specific cancer target known as NY-ESO-1, a protein found on many tumor cells. Then, another model proposed amino acid sequences that would fold into the right shape to bind the target. A third model helped narrow tens of thousands of options down to just 44, which were tested in the lab. One design stood out, and it worked. The study builds on a wave of recent breakthroughs in computational biology, including technologies that led to the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for protein structure prediction. Earlier this year, Jenkins' team also developed AI-designed proteins for improved snakebite antivenoms.Clinical trials are still years away, and many questions remain about how the proteins will perform in the human body. But the researchers are optimistic.

Discover, invent, and then make in India: Nobel laureate David Gross

For 'Make in India' to become a success, India should 'first discover, then invent, and then make,' said David Gross, American theoretical physicist and co-recipient of 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics. Delivering the keynote address at the second day of Quantum India Bengaluru 2025, he said, 'To compete with better and cheaper goods from abroad, one has to first have new technology based on science.' Recollecting the 'Make in India' slogan that he came across nine years ago while attending the Indian Science Congress in Mysuru he said, 'You have to invent in India, but you can't just invent by relying on science done elsewhere. So, I think the correct slogan is discover, then invent, and then make.' 'Not happy with govt. spending in R&D' Mr. Gross, who helped establish the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences in Bengaluru, expressed hope in the country's future and acknowledged the contributions of Indian scientists and technicians to scientific and technological developments. However, he expressed dissatisfaction with the government spending in research and development (R&D). 'India's growth expenditure and R&D has more than doubled since that last 10 years. But as a percentage of the GDP, which has increased much more rapidly, gross spending on R&D remains at an incredibly low level of 0.64%,' he said, pointing out that it is significantly lower than the global average. 'We're lagging behind countries like China by a factor of 4, the U.S. by over a factor of 5, countries like Israel by almost a factor of 10. I don't understand why this has been happening in the last 10 years. There are many reforms that have been initiated but many have not. But this is the overriding number in my opinion,' he criticised. Industries and scientists can do a lot If the Central government was unwilling to increase the R&D spending, Mr. Gross suggested that State governments like Karnataka, and industries and individual scientists must step up. Commenting that it was impressive of the Karnataka government and the scientists of the State to engage in quantum science initiatives he said, 'Discover, invent, and make in Bengaluru.'
