16-year-old girl creates first Sindhi language calculator using AI
KARACHI:
A 16-year-old student from Karachi has stunned the public by creating Pakistan's first-ever calculator in the Sindhi language, using artificial intelligence (AI). The innovative tool, which was developed in just three days, aims to help Sindhi-speaking business people with their daily tasks.
Mahrose, a student at the Rehan Allahwala AI School in Karachi, explained that her project was designed to assist the large population in Sindh that struggles with education, especially those who can only speak and understand Sindhi.
"I created this calculator using AI, keeping in mind the needs of Sindhi-speaking people," she said. "If the government shows interest, this tool could also be commercialised."
The AI school, known for its cutting-edge technology, doesn't use traditional tools like books and pencils. Instead, students are taught using smart devices and artificial intelligence, which has transformed the way education is imparted.
'In today's world, acquiring skills is more important than earning a degree,' she said, adding, 'Young people can earn and succeed by honing their skills and learning new things. I am already earning in dollars, and I also have my private channel."
She also urged other youth to focus on skill development and start working immediately, rather than waiting solely for a degree. Mahrose has won awards at public speaking competitions and is eager to continue her journey as a public speaker.
Her creativity has been praised by her teacher, Ruba Fatima, the Vice Principal of the AI School. "We teach students to earn while they learn," she said.
"Our curriculum is tailored to help students start earning during their studies, and we also provide classes for their parents to help them understand the curriculum," she added.
Despite the growing number of girls in Karachi and across the province pursuing education in scientific subjects, very few women are advancing in practical science and research, both domestically and internationally.
This gap remains a concern, especially on International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated annually on February 11.
Mahrose' success reflects the changing landscape of education and skill development in Pakistan, particularly for young women in science and technology.

Matric results delayed by 15 days due to pending Sindhi paper evaluation
The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) has announced a delay of around 15 days in the announcement of matriculation results for the Science Group, affecting over 180,000 students. Despite earlier assurances that results would be declared by July 31, board officials now estimate the release in the second week of August. The delay comes at a critical juncture, as nearly 100,000 matric students have already applied for admission to government colleges through the Sindh Education Department's centralised online portal. Around 50,000 students have already been allotted seats under the Centralised Admission Policy (CAP). The postponement is expected to create complications for college placements and the academic calendar. Sources within BSEK told The Express Tribune that the primary reason for the delay is the incomplete checking of Sindhi language papers-a compulsory subject for the Science Group. A large number of teachers assigned to mark these papers are currently on leave outside Karachi, creating a backlog in the evaluation process. Efforts are underway to recall them, but the available workforce remains insufficient to complete the task on schedule. The matric exams concluded on June 2. However, the result compilation process has been marred by administrative issues. The position of controller of examinations remains vacant after the board chairman removed the previous controller without legal authority, a move that contravenes the BSEK Act, which grants appointment and removal powers solely to the Chief Minister of Sindh, the board's controlling authority. Also, all three deputy controllers remain under suspension, and the chairman has assigned the duties of the controller to an assistant controller - raising further questions about the legality of the arrangement. In the absence of a permanent examination head, concerns have been raised about transparency, governance, and the board's ability to manage its responsibilities effectively.

Kick overtakes Twitch in key streaming niche with sustained lead in viewership
Kick has overtaken Twitch in the Spanish-speaking livestreaming market, maintaining a lead in viewership since early July 2025. The Stake-backed platform, which has gained traction by signing high-profile streamers from Twitch, surpassed its competitor in watch hours and market share in this segment, according to data from Kick Vs Twitch. The milestone was first reached on July 3, with Kick continuing to extend its lead over Twitch, peaking around July 14. The data, highlighted by Kick's Spanish social media accounts on X, indicates a shift in market dominance in Spanish-speaking regions, with Kick reportedly achieving around 60% of viewership in this category. This marks the second occasion Kick has surpassed Twitch in this segment. In October 2024, Colombian streamer WestCol attracted over 1 million concurrent viewers during his Stream Fighters 3 event, briefly pushing Kick ahead in viewership. The current figures suggest a more sustained lead for Kick, reflecting ongoing changes in the competitive landscape of livestreaming. Kick's broader growth was evident earlier in July when it recorded over 1 billion hours of watch time and captured an estimated 25% of the overall streaming market share. ‘Apna Meter Apni Reading' App unveiled
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif has approved phasing out the role of meter readers in power Distribution Companies (Discos) across the country except KE's service area with initiation of new mechanism 'Apna meter Apni Reading' App, to be launched soon, well informed sources told Business Recorder. Currently, Meter Readers take a snap of consumers' electricity meters which are sent to Discos to Power Information Technology Company (PITC), on the basis of which bills are generated, however, there are numerous complaints of this mechanism as consumers receive inflated bills. In this regard, Prime Minister presided over a meeting on June 17, 2025 wherein issues related to the launching of new scheme and eliminating the menace of overbilling and resolving complains through an automated system came under discussion. Policy for installing more than one electricity meter unchanged, says Power Division amid social media reports According to sources, Prime Minister directed the Power Division to install a Power Smart Mobile App with instructions for use, in both National and four regional languages (Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashtu and Balochi) for easy use / application and understanding of common people. Power Division has been directed to conduct a soft launch of Power Smart Mobile App immediately in order to fix/ streamline any teething issues before the nationwide launch / inauguration by the Prime Minister. The sources said, Prime Minister has given one month to the Power Division to chalk a plan for phasing out the Meter Readers from the power metering system. Power Division in coordination with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is tasked to prepare a comprehensive and engaging media campaign clearly spelling out the objectives of this initiative for the review/ approval of Prime Minister this week. Prime Minister has also directed Power Division that savings on account of reduced administrative charges for meter reading shall be passed on to the consumers . To support the initiative, the Power Information Technology Company has also instructed all Discos to prepare comprehensive media campaigns to inform consumers about the benefits of self-reading. This move aims to eliminate the role of meter readers—many of whom have been implicated in over billing and malpractice. The government has allocated Rs. 316 million for the national media campaign. A detailed Terms of Reference (ToR) has been formulated, outlining the scope, objectives, and methodology for the campaign. Additionally, a clear responsibility matrix has been developed to define the roles and responsibilities of PITC and MEPCO—covering aspects such as media planning, vendor engagement, field activation, monitoring, and reporting. Discos have sought guidance from the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PITC with respect to their due contribution in media campaign. Clarification have also been sought on whether this amount should be deducted from the total payment and borne by individual Discos or whether PITC will facilitate the provision of promotional materials (e.g., boards, standees, banners). Discos have also urged PITC to explore the possibility of securing complimentary airtime for public service announcements through electronic media. Discos highlight the importance of PITC's support in providing the necessary documentation to ensure the success of this public awareness initiative. Furthermore, Discos have stressed the need for thorough testing and validation of applications such as the Power Smart App, Apna Meter Apni Reading, CCMS+, and the Lineman Mobile Solution prior to launch. This is vital to prevent technical issues, ensure a smooth user experience, and build consumer trust. The sources told this correspondent that PITC will ensure high performance, reliability, and a seamless user experience across all platforms during the campaign rollout.
