Savarkar & Golwalkar opposed Ambedkar's Constitution
Mysuru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Saturday that the 'Sangh Parivar never participated in the freedom struggle, yet today they speak about patriotism'.
'It is important for our party workers to have a clear understanding that Veer Savarkar and M.S. Golwalkar, considered as icons by BJP activists, opposed the Constitution drafted by B.R. Ambedkar,' he added.
He was delivering a special lecture at the 'Yuva Kranti' training camp organised by the Youth Congress.
Siddaramaiah said that the Congress played a significant role through its sacrifices and contributions in both the freedom movement and the building of modern India.
He added that the Congress was founded to ensure civil rights and social justice for the people of India.
'The Sangh Parivar never joined the freedom struggle, but now they lecture us about patriotism,' the Chief Minister remarked sarcastically.
'Just as Mahatma Gandhi led the freedom movement, it was late PM Jawahar Lal Nehru who laid a strong foundation for Ambedkar's Constitution in India. Nehru's contributions to promoting unity and practicing tolerance on India's pluralistic soil were immense,' he said. He added that the caste system inspired by Manusmriti caused deep divisions in Indian society, and that this historical fact must be understood.
'The Youth Congress stands to protect India's Constitution and pluralism. You must have clarity on why we are building the Congress and how the RSS and Sangh Parivar are against India's plurality and the Constitution. Those who lack this clarity may not remain in the Congress for long,' Siddaramaiah said.
He also added that freedom, equality, fraternity, tolerance, and coexistence are the very breath of our Constitution — and of India itself.
Quoting Ambedkar, Siddaramaiah said, 'Power should not remain in the hands of a few privileged people; it must be placed in the hands of the common man.'
'The Congress empowers the people with rights and opportunities, while the BJP hands over power and opportunities to the privileged few, which is against the Constitution,' he alleged.
Thus, according to him, the BJP opposes the Constitution itself.
Siddaramaiah said that during his two terms as Chief Minister, he had launched and implemented programmes aimed at reducing inequality.
'For the true fulfillment of freedom, every individual must achieve economic and social empowerment. Uplifting the most marginalised is the spirit of Sarvodaya,' he added.He criticised how ignorance, superstition, and fatalistic beliefs have been artificially strengthened through repeated reinforcement.
'God does not discriminate between people. Beware of those who sow superstition in the name of god,' he cautioned.
He added that God, as envisioned by Basavanna, is the true God we should recognise.
'Simply folding hands before God after committing sins will not absolve one of wrongdoing,' he said.
'The BJP spreads lies in the name of God and religion, and there is a need to raise public awareness against it.'
Siddaramaiah said that even Ambedkar had explicitly written that Savarkar and Dhangekar were responsible for his electoral defeat.
'If you possess clarity and commitment, no matter what others do, you will not waver,' he added.
He also noted that Rama Jois of the BJP had gone to court against the reservation policy brought by Rajiv Gandhi, but the court upheld Gandhi's constitutional amendment, confirming it as constitutional. He added that the BJP had even opposed the Mandal Commission report recommending reservations.
He concluded by saying that if young workers develop a clear understanding of history and principles, they can emerge as strong leaders in the future. Siddaramaiah called for such Youth Congress workshops to be organised in every district across the state. (IANS)

No big-ticket projects for the region, Nandi Hills cabinet meeting postponed
Bengaluru: The govt has postponed the much-anticipated cabinet meeting scheduled to be held at Nandi Hills on Thursday, allegedly due to the absence of significant projects to announce for Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur, and Kolar districts. Instead, the cabinet will convene at the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, following regular protocol. Sources say a key reason behind the last-minute change in venue was lack of approval from the finance department for several proposed projects for the region. Only a limited number of items had been listed on the original agenda, including a Rs 36 crore proposal for a new lake in Chintamani taluk, rejuvenation of 45 lakes in Sidlaghatta and 119 in Chintamani taluks under HN Valley-II Stage, costing an estimated Rs 237 crore. The cabinet was also expected to deliberate on a proposal to rename Bagepalli town to Bagyanagar. "Finance department concurrence was not received for the proposed projects, so the meeting at Nandi Hills has been deferred," said an official from the chief minister's office. The postponement has sparked disappointment among locals and lawmakers who were hoping for long-term solutions to the region's persistent water problems. Congress legislators from the three districts, besides activists, urged the govt to bring meaningful projects to the table and address the region's critical needs. In a letter to chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh, the Shashwata Neeravari Horata Samiti — a local organization focused on irrigation and water issues — highlighted decades-long water scarcity in the area. The group had requested that the Nandi Hills cabinet meeting include discussions on phased water treatment under the KC and HN Valley projects, lake rejuvenation plans, and progress on the long-pending Yettinahole project. "We were ready to protest if our issues were not addressed at the meeting. Now it feels like the govt cancelled it because they had no concrete solutions to offer," said Reddy, a member of the Samiti. BJP MP from Chikkaballapur, K Sudhakar, also voiced his dissatisfaction over the cancellation. "I had high expectations for our region from this cabinet meeting," he said. "The govt must urgently fund the three-stage water treatment under the KC and HN Valley projects and allocate at least Rs 1,000 crore to accelerate the Yettinahole project." Meanwhile, Congress MLAs have reportedly pressed the govt to discuss additional regional development plans, including the proposed international flower market in Chikkaballapur, a water project for Bagepalli, and increased funding for road infrastructure. No new date has been announced for a cabinet session dedicated to the region, leaving many locals uncertain about when their long-standing issues will be addressed.

Prayers for safe return: 20 of a family from Dariyabad on pilgrimage stranded in Iran

The group includes majority of elderly people and two minors. They were supposed to return on June 13. However, due to Israel's strike on Iran and the subsequent cancellation of flights, the family members were shifted from Tehran to Qom city and are anxiously awaiting return. The worried family members in Sangam city are connecting with the embassy and officials concerned for the safe return of their kin. Dariyabad resident Sameer Naqvi told TOI: "As many as 20 members from the family, including my mother Huma Nazin (58), Syeda Begum (grandmother), uncle, aunt, and others, are currently stranded in Qom city of Iran. They have taken shelter in a basement, and we are in constant touch with them since the strife began." Sameer, a software engineer, added: "We are worried and running from pillar to post for their safe return as most people of the group are elderly and have a limited stock of medicines and money."
