
Shocking graphic shows the staggering value drop of $100 in Australia - and it explains why everything is so expensive now
Australia's high inflation after the Covid lockdowns has dramatically reduced the spending power of consumers.
The buying power of $100 in 2018 would only be worth $81.45 in 2025, which would explain those skyrocketing grocery bills at the supermarket or expensive restaurant meals.
Before the onset of Covid in 2020, inflation had stayed firmly within the Reserve Bank's two to three per cent target.
From late 2014 to the end of 2016, inflation was even well under two per cent.
But that all changed from 2021, when average annual inflation levels more than tripled to 2.85 per cent as Covid supply chain constraints pushed up the price of goods.
By 2022, average annual inflation hit 6.6 per cent, after reaching a 32-year high of 7.8 per cent in the December quarter of that year as Russia 's Ukraine invasion pushed up crude oil prices.
This eased to 5.6 per cent in 2023 and 3.2 per cent in 2024, following a series of aggressive interest rate hikes.
While both headline and underlying inflation are now back within the RBA band, Californian-based data expert Ian Webster calculated that Australian consumers are now paying 1.23 times more for goods and services, compared with 2018.
That means the buying power of $100 seven years ago would only be worth $81.45 in 2025.
'A dollar today only buys 81.453 per cent of what it could buy back then,' he said.
Put another way, someone would need to spend $1.23 in 2025 to have the same buying power as a dollar in 2018, given that consumer prices have soared by 23 per cent during the past seven years, on a cumulative basis.
An Australian consumer would need to spend $6.15 today to have the buying power of $5 in 2018.
A lunch that cost $10 in 2018 would now conservatively cost $12.30.
A restaurant meal worth $50 in 2018 would now cost $61.50 while a meal for two that cost $100 seven years ago would cost $123 in 2025.
While annual headline inflation in the March quarter eased to 2.4 per cent, services inflation is still high at 3.7 per cent, Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows.
Little wonder Australian consumers are gloomy, with the Westpac-Melbourne Institute monthly sentiment survey for June showing pessimists outnumbered optimists.
A score above 100 indicates more Australians are feeling positive about the economy.
But this month, the score stood at just 92.6 points.
While this marked an improvement on May's 92.1 point level, Westpac's head of Australian macro forecasting Matthew Hassan said inflation was still dominating the minds of everyday consumers.
'Topic-wise, "inflation" remains the dominant news with the highest level of recall,' he said.
'The overall mood remains broadly unchanged with consumers stuck in a holding pattern of "cautious pessimism".'
The Reserve Bank's February and May rate cuts are at least making consumers more inclined to buy a major household good, the Westpac survey of 1,200 Australians found.
But slow economic growth and Donald Trump's tariffs are continuing to make Australians feel uneasy.
'More sluggish growth reads domestically and the unsettled situation around global trade are continuing to weigh heavily on expectations,' Mr Hassan said.

Economists, including those at the Bank of England, expect inflation to remain above target over the rest of the year. Uncertainty over U.S. President Donald Trump 's tariff agenda and the unrest in the Middle East make it difficult to forecast economic developments and the path of interest rates. 'We are sticking with our call for the Bank of England to continue to reduce rates at a quarterly cadence,' said Felix Feather, economist at asset management firm Aberdeen. Women more worried about economy under Trump than men, poll finds
Women across the political spectrum are more concerned about the state of the US economy and inflation under Donald Trump than men are, according to a new exclusive poll for the Guardian. More Democrats than Republicans are now concerned about the economy following the president's return to power. But pessimism was higher for women even among Republicans and independents, according to a new Harris poll. Overall, 62% of women and 47% of men said that the economy and inflation is getting worse, a gap of 15 percentage points. The gender gap crossed party lines with both Democratic and Republican women expressing greater concerns about the economy than men did. 'Here's what everyone missed: women aren't being pessimistic about the economy – they're being realistic,' said Libby Rodney, chief strategy officer of Harris Poll. 'Women are experiencing the sharp edge of inflation on essentials like groceries and childcare in ways that stock portfolios can't capture.' The news will be worrying for the Trump administration. Women are more likely than men to be registered to vote and to show up at the polls. While Trump made gains among women in the 2024 election, women were still 10% more likely to vote for Kamala Harris. Recent analysis has shown that much of Trump's win can be attributed to gains made among men, particularly non-white men. Across a series of questions about their outlook on the state of the economy, most respondents (78%) – both men and women – expressed concerns about the amount of uncertainty, particularly around prices. Yet women appear to be bearing the brunt of Trump's economic policy, particularly around his tariffs. Previous research has shown that women are more likely to feel the impacts of inflation because of broader gender inequality, including gaps in pay and household responsibilities. While a majority of respondents said they were primarily responsible for their household's shopping, more women (71%) than men (62%) reported being their household's primary shopper. This difference in household shopping responsibility translates into broader gaps in concern over affordability and prices: More women said they are very worried about food prices (52% of women compared to 39% of men) More women said they're spending more time trying to find deals or go to more affordable stores (36% versus 26%) More women said their financial security is getting worse because of their difficulty in affording essential goods and services (55% versus 46%) The differences increased when respondents were asked about their comfort in affording their lifestyles in the current economy, including affording a family, a home, life as a single individual, and childcare. Just 27% of women said they felt comfortable affording a family now, compared to 43% of men. Although confidence in switching jobs was low among all respondents, 34% of men were confident in a job switch compared to 25% of women. Women are also more pessimistic about receiving a meaningful raise this year: 54% of women said they think they'll get a raise, compared to 63% of men. Lack of confidence in the economy can impact people's behavior, particularly the big milestones they can make in their lives. They are more likely to delay buying homes, starting a family or switching jobs. Rayner stands in for Starmer at PMQs
Angela Rayner is set to stand in for Sir Keir Starmer at Prime Minister's Questions. Sir Keir is flying back to Britain after attending a G7 summit in Canada, leaving the job of representing the Government at PMQs to his deputy. Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, is expected to substitute for Kemi Badenoch and he will have plenty of ammunition to choose from. The latest official numbers published this morning showed inflation had fallen slightly in May from 3.5 per cent to 3.4 per cent but that figure is still way above the Bank of England's 2 per cent target. The Government is pushing back the opening of HS2 between London and Birmingham beyond the original timeline of 2033, with a likely delay of at least two years. And then there is the worsening situation in the Middle East, amid signs that Donald Trump is poised to enter the war between Israel and Iran. The Government also remains under pressure over the grooming gangs scandal. Sir Keir announced at the weekend that there will be a full national statutory inquiry having previously resisted calls for such a move and accused proponents of 'jumping on the bandwagon of the far Right.'
