DAP's stance on Sabah corruption claims ‘clear,' says Warisan aide

KOTA KINABALU (Apr 24): DAP has made its stance on high-profile corruption allegations involving several state assemblymen, including the Speaker of the Sabah State Assembly.
Yong Tain Vui, Political Assistant to Warisan deputy president Darell Leiking, said the public is well aware of DAP Sabah's stance, as reflected in multiple statements issued by DAP leaders over the past months.
For instance, he said DAP Sabah chairman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, in a statement dated 20 January 2025, reaffirmed that DAP remains a part of the GRS-led state government. He also emphasized that while Sabah DAP operates autonomously without needing direct approval from DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke, it must take into account the coalition's collective position — particularly PKR's firm commitment to support the Sabah Government until the end of its term and to continue working with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).
Additionally, DAP Central Executive Committee member and MP for Sandakan, Vivian Wong, publicly thanked the Chief Minister for his commitment to safeguarding Sabah's natural resources despite the ongoing corruption allegations, Yong said in a statement on Thursday.
He was responding to the call of Kepayan Community Development Officer (PPM) Cyril Liew to DAP Sabah to clarify its stance on the high-profile corruption scandal ahead of the upcoming 17th State Election, warning that continued silence could erode trust and cost the party at the ballot box.
Yong added in response to growing political speculation, GRS chairman and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor himself has also stated that GRS will explore the possibility of collaborating with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the next state election.
'It is important to note that questions from grassroots supporters are no longer centered on DAP Sabah's stance — this has been made abundantly clear. Instead, the public is more concerned about whether the next state government will demonstrate genuine resolve in combating corruption to build a better Sabah.
'While DAP and PH leaders in Sabah continue to hold ministerial and key positions within the current administration, none of them resign from the current government – there is unnecessary to question their stances on corruption allegation, the answer is very clear,' said Yong.
He added it is also important to point out that DAP has not openly challenged or called for the resignation of any of the state assemblymen implicated in the corruption allegations — unlike the firm anti-corruption stance the party has championed in the past. This inaction further reinforces the perception that their position on this matter is, indeed, crystal clear.
Lastly, in an earlier interview with Cai Jin, veteran DAP leader Teresa Kok acknowledged the challenges of openly criticizing fellow coalition partners while serving in government. She noted that there are times when DAP must adopt a 'quiet party' approach in order to preserve coalition stability.

After this, we will hold discussions with GRS,' he was quoted as saying. Last month, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor reiterated his desire to continue the existing alliance between his coalition and PH for the upcoming state election. Hajiji, who is the Sabah chief minister, said the existing cooperation between GRS and PH in governing the state should be the foundation in determining any electoral pact. He had also conveyed his views to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is the PH chairman. Hajiji had stated numerous times in the past GRS's intention to work with PH in the state election, which must be held by the end of the year. In early May, however, the unity government secretariat announced that BN and PH had agreed to work together to face the state polls, following a meeting between their chairmen, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Anwar. Hajiji then threatened that GRS would go solo, but Anwar later stepped in and called for PH-BN to work with the state coalition. PETALING JAYA : Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan has hailed the enforcement of the Malaysian Media Council Act 2025 as a landmark reform, saying it underscores the government's commitment to institutional change and press freedom. He said the Act, which came into force today, marks a shift from government intervention to a self-regulatory framework that empowers the media to manage itself more independently. 'Complaints, grievances, dissatisfaction and any issues related to media reporting will be managed and resolved through a dispute resolution mechanism that will be developed under this Act,' he said in a Facebook post. Syahredzan said the new legislation will also reduce reliance on legal action, such as civil suits or criminal charges, to settle media-related disputes. 'Legal actions under laws such as the Communications and Multimedia Act against media bodies and online practitioners should also be minimised,' he said. Earlier today, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil announced the Act's enforcement today in conjunction with National Journalists Day (Hawana), and said the founding board of the media council had been finalised. The council will serve as an independent self-regulatory body that protects media freedom and ensures compliance with ethical journalism standards. Syahredzan, who is also the DAP national vice-chairman, said the Act fulfils a Pakatan Harapan manifesto promise made during the 15th general election under the 'Kita Boleh' campaign. However, he said, the government's reform agenda should not stop here. 'The government must also review laws that restrict media freedom, such as the Printing Presses and Publications Act, to ensure alignment with the freedom of expression guaranteed by the Federal Constitution,' he said.

GRS should challenge BN in Sabah polls, says Armizan
Armizan KOTA KINABALU (June 14): Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) deputy secretary-general Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali has called for the coalition to face off against Barisan Nasional (BN) in the upcoming state election. The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister said a direct contest would allow voters to decide who should govern Sabah, aligning with Sabah BN chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin's preference for BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) to compete without GRS. 'Everyone must respect Bung Moktar's stance. No one should dismiss his autonomy as Sabah Umno chief,' Armizan said in a statement on Saturday. 'A direct contest will end accusations that a party's victory was due to another's support rather than its own strength.' On June 2, Bung had ruled out pre-election cooperation with GRS, citing past tensions. However, Armizan clarified that his view was personal and not an official GRS position. He stressed that GRS remains open to collaboration with PH and other parties that form the state government, praising PH for rejecting the 'Langkah Kinabalu' move and backing Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as Chief Minister. 'Today's government functions well under the current partnership, but grassroots GRS supporters want to compete against BN,' he said. Armizan added that being part of the federal Unity Government should not prevent state-level contests, noting that past elections in Sabah, Melaka and Johor saw similar clashes among federal allies. 'The Unity Government's MoU doesn't mandate state-level cooperation. State polls are about choosing a state government, not the federal administration,' he said.
