M4S promotes unity while respecting Sabah's rights: Ahmad Maslan

Published on: Thursday, July 17, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 17, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Ahmad and others at the event. TAWAU: Central Umno war room secretariat chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan says Sabahans are now presented with two major choices in the coming 17th State Election – the nationally-driven 'Malaysia for Sabahans' (M4S) or the autonomy-based 'Sabah for Sabahans' (S4S) agenda. He described S4S as being pushed by local parties prioritising state rights, while M4S promotes a broader national integration approach within the Malaysian federation. Advertisement Ahmad stressed that M4S champions unity, fairness, and national inclusion without sidelining Sabah's interests and rights. He said that Sabahans are not only for Sabah but also for Malaysia, as the country is shared by 14 states and federal territories. He was commenting on the outcome of his working visit to the State on Wednesday evening and said S4S had a narrower scope compared to M4S. Ahmad added that for Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) to attract other parties in forming a new unity government post-election, it must win all or most of the seats it contests. Speaking at an Umno Kalabakan event, he said the goal was possible if the party machinery successfully rallied voters to back Umno-BN candidates. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Gagasan Rakyat Tanjung Aru mobilises Sembulan emergency bridge repairs

Published on: Thursday, July 17, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 17, 2025 Text Size: A Kampung Sembulan Lama resident gives the thumbs up on a newly restored walkway. KOTA KINABALU: A community-driven 'gotong-royong' programme to repair key wooden bridges in Kampung Sembulan Tengah and Kampung Sembulan Lama was carried out this week by Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah Tanjung Aru, led by committee member Dr. Ritchie Jay Cheng. The repair works, treated as emergency interventions, aimed to restore safety and access for villagers following recent heavy rain which had damaged the bridge structures. Advertisement The team replaced broken wooden floorboards and reinforced the base structures using materials donated by Dr. Ritchie and his team. 'These efforts aren't about the upcoming 17th State Election (PRN17). 'Volunteering and community solidarity are values we've upheld for decades. This is not about praise, but about sincerity in serving where help is needed," he said. He emphasised that the interconnected wooden bridges serve as vital walkways linking many homes in the area, underscoring the urgency of the initiative. 'This gotong-royong shows that Gagasan Rakyat Tanjung Aru remains close to the people. "We are committed to continuing these efforts consistently for the well-being of our community," he added. He said the division pledges to carry on similar community initiatives as part of its long-term commitment to grassroots support. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? SAGA XI to proceed as planned despite election uncertainty

KOTA KINABALU (July 15): The 11th Sabah Games (SAGA), scheduled to take place in Tawau from October 11 to 17, will proceed as planned despite uncertainty over the timing of the 17th State Election. Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Fairuz Renddan gave the assurance, saying discussions would be held with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor to ensure the Games run smoothly. 'We're not sure … that's up to the Chief Minister to decide when the election will be. But if it's held earlier, it won't interfere with the Games. 'God willing, there will be discussions with the Chief Minister so we can avoid any clashes,' he told reporters after officiating the SAGA XI Team Sports Group Stage Draw at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Tuesday. Hajiji had earlier confirmed that the State Legislative Assembly sitting on July 7–8 was the final one for the current term, although he did not disclose when it would be dissolved. The assembly is set to dissolve automatically on November 11 if not done earlier. Fairuz said Tawau is ready to host over 8,000 athletes and officials for the state's premier multi-sport event. 'I believe all the teams are ready and, from the main organising committee's side, everything is already in place. We are just waiting for the date,' he said. The assistant minister also witnessed the draw for team sports including football, futsal, netball, basketball, sepak takraw, hockey, volleyball and rugby. A total of 23 sports will be contested in SAGA, involving 30 district contingents — including new additions Sook and Paitan. A total of 232 gold, 232 silver, and 339 bronze medals will be up for grabs in the biennial event. 'I would like to advise the athletes and teams to give their utmost best in SAGA, and hopefully more records will be set. 'More importantly, this is not just about the Sabah Games — we are also preparing for the next Malaysia Games (Sukma),' he added. Also present at the ceremony were Ministry Permanent Secretary Datuk Mansur Asun and Sabah Sports Council (MSN Sabah) Director Mohd Asneh Mohd Noor.

Warisan firm in not forming alliances

Published on: Tuesday, July 15, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 15, 2025 By: Ibrahim Tabir Text Size: Azis said Warisan is also working towards securing enough seats to form the state government in the coming 17th State Election (PRN17). KUNAK: Parti Warisan reiterated its firm stance to continue operating independently without forming alliances with any other party in the coming state election (PRN). Its Information Chief, Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman, said the party is currently focusing on defending the seats it won in the last election, including the Kunak state seat, following the defection of the elected representative. Advertisement He added that Warisan is also working towards securing enough seats to form the state government in the coming 17th State Election (PRN17). 'We must have the mindset to win, to believe in ourselves and show that same belief to the people. Given the current situation, we're confident that Warisan can go beyond the 37-seat mark required by the constitution to form the state government,' he told the media after attending a casual Sembang Santai session with the Kunak community at SJKC Pai Sheng Hall last Saturday. In the same development, Parti Warisan Supreme Council member Datuk Mohd Yusof Apdal expressed optimism that the Kunak state seat would continue to be held by Warisan by fielding the best candidate in the state election. A total of 500 new members from five branches in Kunak submitted their membership forms to Warisan at the event. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Master is not there, but here. Armizan says days of peninsula leaders making such claims are over

Published on: Monday, July 14, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 14, 2025 By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: 'It's time we send a clear signal that the master is not there, the master is here — the ultimate master is the people of Sabah. Why did I use the word 'master'? That's a story for another time,' Armizan told a press conference after officiating a national level Consumers' Festival (ConFest) at ITCV Shopping Mall, Sunday. PENAMPANG: GRS Deputy Secretary Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the days when a certain party or coalition in the peninsula can claim that it was responsible for making so and so an Assemblyman or the Sabah Chief Minister are over. 'We've moved on. This is our path forward. We do not want to keep hearing such claims. Past is past. What matters now is the direction we take. 'We can hear in their speeches that 'we (Malaya-based parties/coalition) made Hajiji an assemblyman, we chose Hajiji to be Chief Minister. When we are part of a national coalition or party, sentiments like that are inevitable. 'This is because to become an election candidate, the selection and the official letter of appointment (watikah) have to be issued by leaders from Peninsular Malaysia. 'Even the Chief Minister candidate was chosen from among state leaders who were appointed by the leadership in the peninsula. So whoever is picked will be expected to be loyal and obedient to the top party leadership over there (peninsula). It's different with local parties. 'The candidates are decided by, and the appointment letters issued by, the local party leaders themselves. The Chief Minister comes from among the leaders of these local parties, chosen by our own in Sabah. 'It's time we send a clear signal that the master is not there, the master is here — the ultimate master is the people of Sabah. Why did I use the word 'master'? That's a story for another time,' Armizan told a press conference after officiating a national level Consumers' Festival (ConFest) at ITCV Shopping Mall, Sunday. He was referring to an accusation by Perikatan Nasional (PN) Chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in Sandakan Saturday that GRS Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor betrayed PN to support Pakatan Harapan (PH) following the last general election. Armizan said while it is the right of any individual to join national parties or national coalitions, GRS has chosen to chart its own course for the future. He also said Muhyiddin deserved thanks for stating there would be no negotiation or cooperation with GRS in the coming 17th State Election (PRN17). The Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living said Muhyiddin's remarks have eased the GRS position in Sabah. He said this development is beneficial because it was PN which publicly rejected working with GRS (in PRN17), preventing GRS from appearing to be arrogant if it (GRS) had been the ones to make such a declaration. 'Now that it is clear where PN stands and GRS doesn't have to issue a statement rejecting collaboration with certain parties — which could make us seem arrogant or conceited. Let others say it, and we'll just welcome it. 'It also makes it easier for us to manage sentiments among our grassroots members. 'As you know, previously it involved BN Sabah, and now it's PN, so this clarity helps us move forward and focusing on winning the support of the people, not chasing after alliances with other coalitions,' he said. He said there is no expectation that national leaders will fully understand Sabah's stance, but he made it clear this is the position (GRS moving forward) they hold today. Armizan who is also Member of Parliament for Papar said some from the peninsula only come to Sabah occasionally—once every three or four months — to talk about State issues and the needs of Sabah people. 'But we are here. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji and our local representatives and leaders are here all the time, consistently fighting for the rights and interests of Sabah. 'At the heart of our fight is our responsibility for Sabah first, the interests of our state above all,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
