PKR Sabah thanks PM for trust, vows to uphold state rights

KOTA KINABALU (May 31): Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah is grateful to the Prime Minister for his trust and confidence in the current leadership of Pakatan Harapan (PH) Sabah.
'I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to the Prime Minister for my reappointment as chairman of the State Leadership Council (MPN), a great responsibility in leading PKR Sabah as we prepare for the upcoming 17th State Election (PRN17),' said Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, the chairman of Keadilan Sabah State Leadership Council.
He said that in line with the direction of the new leadership and the aspirations of the party, PKR Sabah will strengthen this new direction through a constructive negotiation process with its partners in PH Sabah, aiming to deliver the best possible outcomes for all.
'Our goal, as original Sabahan is to empower and uphold the rights of the state in order to bring the greatest benefit to the people of Sabah,' he said in a statement on Friday.
'We reaffirm our commitment to the principles of unity, progress and reform, and we are determined to continue contributing positively toward the development and prosperity of Sabah under the PH coalition, while also opening avenues of collaboration with both local and national parties.'

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A Pakatan Harapan leader has urged Kedah Umno not to jump the gun by urging Barisan Nasional to review its pact with PH if Tengku Zafrul Aziz becomes a PKR member. Kedah PH deputy chief Nor Azrina Surip said the state Umno leadership should just leave it to the central leadership of both coalitions to resolve the matter harmoniously. 'We're better off leaving it to the federal leadership while those of us at the state level remain in the spirit of unity,' the Kedah PKR chief told FMT. Azrina, a member of PKR's central leadership council, said the leaders of both coalitions in Kedah should focus on improving their cooperation in preparation for the next general election. '(PKR) heeds the views of our allies in the unity government, including the concerns raised by Kedah Umno leaders,' said the former MP. Tengku Zafrul announced his exit from Umno on Friday and said he intends to join PKR. This led to calls for his resignation from his Cabinet post as well as for PKR not to accept him into the party. Kedah Umno communications director Syed Johan Rizal Syed Unan Mashri had urged BN to review its alliance with PH if Tengku Zafrul becomes a PKR member. He said it would be akin to 'stealing' an Umno leader, drawing comparisons with others defecting to Bersatu in the past.

Good relations between leaders ensure development, says Ewon
KOTA KINABALU: Good relations between assemblymen and government leaders are beneficial, says Penampang MP Datuk Ewon Benedick. He said that close relations between both parties help ensure continued development and smooth organisation of programmes for the people, as seen in Penampang over the years. He then added that the same applies to other districts with amicable working relations with government leaders, ensuring development and policies for those constituencies are achieved. Benedick made these remarks at the Kepayan Kaamatan Festival on Sunday (June 1), attended by leaders including Kepayan assemblyman Jannie Lasimbang and PH leaders Steven Shim, Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, Datuk Chan Foong Hin, Vivian Wong, and Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii. "Each time there is an issue that needs attention in Kepayan, I will sit with the assemblyman to find solutions. We do not work in silos but as a team," he said. He mentioned that some ongoing projects in Penampang include the flood mitigation project, Terian-Buayan road upgrading, bridge construction in Babagon, and the PANTAS programme in Kg. Togudon. A Penampang Development Plan 2024-2035 is also included in the proposals for the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13), Benedick added. "I am confident that with these strategic plans and work relations among various parties, including the federal and state governments, Penampang will continue to receive better allocations and development benefits in RMK13," he said. Many economic and development initiatives have been implemented in Penampang, including the National Entrepreneurship Institute (INSKEN), Tekun Nasional, and the Tamu Desa project. On Kaamatan, Benedick said the festival is celebrated by people from all cultural and social backgrounds, in line with the 'Kaamatan for All' theme chosen for this year.

Tengku Zafrul delivers results, will stay on as minister despite UMNO exit
KUALA LUMPUR: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz's decision to quit UMNO and express his intention to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) will not affect his position as Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today. The prime minister said Tengku Zafrul has been performing his ministerial duties well, especially in matters related to investments. 'Tengku Zafrul is a minister who has carried out his responsibilities very well. Our investments amount to hundreds of billions, many of which have been handled through his efforts. 'So, his position as minister is not affected, and we want him to continue his duties as his performance has been good, and the country needs his contribution,' Anwar told reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (PBAKL) 2025 here today. Also present at the event were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, PBAKL 2025 organising chairman Mohd Khair Ngadiron and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka director-general Dr Hazami Jahari. Anwar, who is also PKR president, said the party has yet to formally discuss Tengku Zafrul's intention to join, and any decision would be made after consulting coalition partners in the MADANI government. 'He (Tengku Zafrul) has opted to apply (to join PKR). We haven't discussed anything yet... let him complete his Hajj pilgrimage first, and let's not jump to unhealthy conclusions. 'When someone makes a decision, we respect it. So, on behalf of PKR, of course we will need to discuss it with our fellow government coalition parties and decide what's best,' he said. On Friday (May 30), Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as UMNO Supreme Council member, Kota Raja division chief and party member. At the same time, he expressed his intent to join PKR. Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman and UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday confirmed that UMNO executive secretary Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan had received Tengku Zafrul's resignation letter.
