GRS committed to PH alliance, says Hajiji

Hajiji with the scholarship recipients. KOTA KINABALU (July 21): Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) president Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor has confirmed that GRS intends to continue its cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) under the current state government structure. 'Yes, of course. We want to continue the cooperation within the current government — the state government of GRS and PH,' he said when asked whether the pact between GRS and PH would be formalised. When asked if GRS would contest the majority of seats in the upcoming election, Hajiji responded: 'Certainly.' 'We also want to listen to local aspirations, so we will make the best decision for Sabah. For us, political stability is very important — not just winning the election, but ensuring stability after the election. Only then can we plan and develop our state,' he told reporters today at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC). Hajiji also shared that discussions with PH had taken place several times, including talks with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is the chairman of PH. 'I think we will make a final decision. Of course, we will announce it when the time comes,' he added. Hajiji was responding to questions regarding the upcoming Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah general assembly, scheduled for this weekend. He said the three-day assembly is being held in accordance with the party's constitutional requirements. 'This time, the meeting is considered important because we may face an election at any time after the assembly,' said Hajiji, who was attending the State Scholarship Awards presentation ceremony at SICC. Speaking on the scholarship initiative, Hajiji expressed pride in the state government's continued prioritisation of education. 'In my development roadmap, I've made human capital development a key focus. Over the past few years, we've seen success in assisting not only high-achieving students but also those in need of support,' he said. Hajiji added that he hopes talented Sabahans will return home to serve the state after completing their studies. 'We hope that when they pursue courses relevant to current developments, it will create more employment opportunities. We want them to come back and contribute to Sabah — both in the government and private sectors,' he said.

GRS to work with Pakatan Harapan in Sabah polls

KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) will work together with Pakatan Harapan (PH) to face the upcoming Sabah election despite calls for the Sabah-based political coalition to go to the polls solo. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor confirmed that GRS has held discussions with PH on the seat negotiations for the 17th state election. Hajiji also said discussions were also held with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the PH chairman. "We will continue our cooperation in the current government — both at the state level, between GRS and Pakatan Harapan. "I believe we will make a final decision and announce the outcome of the seat negotiations when the time comes. "It's not just about winning the election. After the election, we must ensure political stability. "Only then can we properly plan and develop our state," he said, adding that GRS still aims to contest the majority of seats. The Chief Minister was speaking to reporters after presenting the Sabah Excellence Scholarship to high achievers at the Sabah International Convention Centre here. Commenting on the upcoming three-day Parti Gagasan Rakyat (Gagasan) general assembly this weekend, the party chairman said it is a constitutional requirement for the party. "This meeting is important because we may be facing a state election at any time after the assembly. "So, let's wait and see. I will share more during the assembly," Hajiji said.

'Turun Anwar' rally alone won't dethrone PMX but a successful aftermath can rub off on MPs to vote him out'

THE PAS-inspired Turun Anwar campaign which is currently underway at state level prior to taking shape this Saturday (July 26) at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur will not be able bring down Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on its own. Taking the cue from PMX who has stated that he will not step down because he did not steal money belonging to the rakyat, veteran journalist and blogger Datuk A. Kadir Jasin reckoned that pending the 16th General Election (GE16), 'the only way to make him fall is by authentically proving that there is support from at least 112 MPs'. 'The Turun Anwar tour is more relevant to his opponents in preparation for the GE which must be held before Feb 17, 2028,' the national journalism laureate penned on his Facebook page. 'But if the rallies, protests and marches cause his supporters in the Parliament to defect, the possibility that he (PMX) will lose his majority and be forced to resign cannot be ruled out.' At any rate, Kadir does not expect PMX to retaliate by taking harsh action against the perpetrators and detractors, be they the opposition or even former PKR deputy president and ex-economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's faction. 'Harsh action could further damage PMX's image as a reformist while increasing public sympathy and support for the opposition,' opined Kadir who is perceived by Madani backers to be a loyalist to twice former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who is now an adviser of Perikatan Nasional (PN). 'However, this does not mean that state apparatuses such as the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will not act'. The former editor-in-chief of mainstream New Straits Times further corrected public misconception that PMX on his own did not win the 2022 national polls through the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition which he helms as chairman. 'The PH he led didn't have enough seats to form a government. Once again, UMNO defected by giving support to PH and PMX. As a result, PMX has enough seats to form a government and become PM,' recounted Kadir. 'UMNO which campaigned on the slogan 'No Bersatu, no Anwar, no DAP' went on to win the Deputy PM post following which the DPM (Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) was further rewarded with DNAA (discharge not amounting to acquittal) on 47 prima facie cases.' – July 21, 2025 Main image credit: PAS Johor/Facebook

Kota Kinabalu: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) has launched its election machinery in Sabah while continuing seat negotiations with its Pakatan Harapan (PH) partners ahead of the state polls. Amanah President Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the party has requested to contest five seats, including Tanjung Aru, Lumadan and Sulabayan, but no final decisions have been reached. Advertisement He assured that Amanah remains committed to PH unity, noting that two of the requested seats have been tentatively agreed upon but are still subject to coalition approval. Mohamad also responded to the 'Sabah for Sabahans' sentiment by affirming that all Amanah candidates fielded in the state will be Sabahans and announced plans for grassroots campaigns across Sabah. Sabah Amanah chairman Lahirul Latigu said the party aims to avoid three-way contests, and while more seats have been requested, any final allocation will depend on ongoing discussions within PH. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
