‘Not the way to treat a senior': Pakistan coach Mike Hesson denies asking Babar Azam to take up wicket-keeping for T20I spot

Indian Express11-07-2025
Pakistan white-ball head coach Mike Hesson quashed all speculations that suggested that he had requested former captain Babar Azam to take up wicket-keeping to bid and reclaim his spot in the T20I set-up.
Babar, who was dropped alongside senior batter Mohammed Rizwan from the T20I squad early in March, continued to be snubbed from the team announced for the forthcoming Bangladesh series, starting July 20. Speculations had then surfaced that Babar was asked by the team management to work on an additional role besides being a top-order batsman to regain a slot in the T20I side.
Hesson clarified that Pakistan did not view Babar, the team's highest-ever T20I run-scorer as a wicket-keeping option, denying all rumours.
'No discussion took place with Babar where I suggested he also keep wickets. He has never kept wickets in his entire career and you suggest he keeps wickets. This is not the way to treat a former captain and senior,' Hesson told the reporters, according to PTI.
'Firstly, Babar Azam is not seen as a wicketkeeping option, no,' Hesson said. 'Not sure where that came from, but I have heard that speculation. Babar is competing for one of the opening positions at the moment. But obviously we have Fakhar [Zaman] and Saim [Ayub] in those two roles at the moment, so he's competing for that.'
Despite racking up 4223 with an average close to 40, Babar's middling 129.22 strike rate came in the way of a crucial top-order spot in the shortest format. Hesson also clarified that he had not mentioned that only players with a strike rate north of 150 will be considered for T20Is.
'No doubt strike rate is important in T20 cricket but you have to combine it with a volume of runs,' Hesson said. 'There's a good reason why our ranking in T20 cricket is as low as it is, because our strike rates from a batting point of view are not high enough. We certainly made some shifts in that last series to play a more expansive game of cricket and probably catch up with the rest of the world, as that is the way the modern game is.
However, Hesson acknowledged that the 30-year-old Babar needed improvement on scoring rates, while backing him to make amends.
'Babar is one of many who have the ability to make those improvements. And I'm here to work with them and help them. In the last month or so, he's made some really good changes. It's not just a matter of going from 125 to 150, it's a matter of increasing what you can offer because we're no doubt often 30-40 runs short with the bat. So, we need to find a way of getting that.'
Pakistan squad for Bangladesh T20Is: Salman Ali Agha (Captain), Abrar Ahmed, Ahmed Daniyal, Faheem Ashraf, Fakhar Zaman, Hassan Nawaz, Hussain Talat, Khushdil Shah, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Haris, Mohammad Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Salman Mirza, Sufyan Moqim.

MS Dhoni keeps retirement plans quiet but promises CSK will be 'quite sorted' next year: ‘We were slightly worried…'

After a forgettable IPL 2025 campaign where Chennai Super Kings finished bottom of the table, MS Dhoni, who took over the captaincy of the franchise mid-way through the season after an injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad, offered a clear-eyed assessment of the team's struggles and the road ahead. Speaking at a private function, the CSK legend acknowledged the batting issues that plagued the five-time champions and revealed that Ruturaj Gaikwad's return would be key in reviving their fortunes next season. MS Dhoni during IPL 2025(PTI) Dhoni, who rarely makes public appearances, revealed that the team's batting concerns should ease with Gaikwad's return and all but confirmed the franchise's plans to retain the stylish opener. 'We are slightly worried about our batting order. But I think our batting order is quite sorted out now. Rutu (Gaikwad) will be coming back. He got injured. But he will be coming back. So, we are quite sorted now,' he said. Dhoni oversaw a turbulent campaign where CSK won just four out of 14 matches. The absence of an in-form top order left the side vulnerable throughout the tournament. Gaikwad's injury, coupled with an unsettled middle order, proved costly as CSK failed to mount any serious challenge. The 27-year-old last played for CSK on April 8 against Punjab Kings at Mullanpur. He briefly agreed to play county cricket for Yorkshire but later withdrew, citing personal reasons. He has now been named in the West Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, indicating his return to competitive cricket is on track. Dhoni on CSK's prolonged struggles Dhoni also acknowledged the franchise's shortcomings over the past two seasons and indicated that changes were on the horizon with the IPL mini-auction coming up in December. 'I won't say we (CSK) slacked off (in IPL 2025). But there were certain holes that we needed to plug in. A small auction is coming in December. Some loopholes are there, and we will try to plug those in,' he said. With back-to-back underwhelming seasons, Dhoni said it was crucial to reflect on what went wrong and focus on course correction. 'Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. But what is important is for you to see the learnings. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong? And that was the question for us last year also,' he said. Dhoni, however, didn't address his future with CSK. There had been a hint about Dhoni considering whether he would turn up for another season after CSK's last match of the season, where he stated that he would assess how his body recovers.

Gavaskar rates Shubman Gill's 754 runs way bigger than his 54-year-old record: 'I was the team's baby. He's the captain'

India captain Shubman Gill failed to breach Sunil Gavaskar's 54-year-old record of scoring the most runs in a single Test series. The right-handed batter was well within sight of going past the 774-run tally to break the long-standing record. However, he failed to do so after being dismissed by Gus Atkinson for 11 runs off 9 balls in the second innings of the fifth and final Test against England at the Oval, London. As a result, the 25-year-old finished with a haul of 754 runs, falling 20 runs short of Gavaskar's record. Shubman Gill scored 754 runs in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. (PTI) After the close of play on Day 3 of the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Sunil Gavaskar presented Gill with a signed cap and shirt as he applauded the India Test captain for having a marvellous time with the bat in hand in his debut series as skipper. Sunil Gavaskar had scored 774 runs in the 1971 Test series against the West Indies. Several Indian stars have come close to breaking this record; however, it has always been a case of so close yet so far. Speaking on the Sony Sports Network, Sunil Gavaskar stated that Gill's achievement is way bigger than his, as the haul of 754 runs came with him having the additional responsibility of being the captain. 'Well, yes, in anticipation of him going past my record, I had gotten something for him. This is all in God's hands. But 754 runs, it's fantastic. The difference is that 754 runs have come with him having the additional responsibility of being the captain,' said Gavaskar while speaking to Sanjana Ganesan and Cheteshwar Pujara. If I failed, nobody would have given a hoot. As the captain, to score 754 runs. More than 750 runs, where he is making the difference to his side's fortunes. Don't go by those 20 runs, just see what those 754 runs have done for Indian cricket,' he added. Gill's fantastic run in England Shubman Gill had a fantastic time with the bat in hand in the five-match series against England. The right-handed batter started the series off with a bang as he smashed a ton in the Headingley Test. He then scored centuries in both innings of the second Test at Edgbaston, helping India beat England by 336 runs. The Lord's Test turned out to be forgettable for the Indian captain; however, he bounced back strongly, registering a century in the second innings of the Manchester Test. Speaking of the fifth and final Test, India are in the driver's seat against England, heading into the fourth day. The visitors need eight wickets for the win, considering Chris Woakes has been ruled out of the Test. On the other hand, England need 324 more runs for the win. At stumps on Day 3, the hosts' score read 50/1 with Zak Crawley falling on the eventual final delivery of the day.

PCB issues blanket ban on future participation in WCL

Lahore, Aug 3 (PTI) The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Sunday announced a blanket ban on its players' participation in future editions of the World Championship of Legends (WCL), accusing the tournament organisers of being 'biased" and lacking sporting integrity. The decision follows a sequence of events in which the Indian team forfeited both their group-stage clash and semifinal against Pakistan, citing the country's stand against bilateral sporting ties with the neighbouring country after the gruesome Pahalagam terror attack. 'The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announces that it is issuing a blanket ban from future participation in the World Championship of Legends (WCL)," the PCB said in a statement after its board of governors meeting held virtually under the chairmanship of Mohsin Naqvi. The PCB also took strong exception to the WCL's decision to award points to India despite the forfeiture, calling it 'tainted with hypocrisy and bias." India and Pakistan had been slated to meet in the group stage, but the Indian side — featuring Shikhar Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, and Harbhajan Singh — refused to play, citing national sentiment following the terror attack and India's subsequent 'Operation Sindoor'. With India also pulling out of the semifinal, Pakistan advanced directly to the final. 'The PCB reviewed with considerable disappointment WCL's appalling conduct of awarding points to a willfully forfeiting team, and the content of the press releases of the WCL announcing the cancellation of the scheduled India vs. Pakistan legends matches, which were tainted with hypocrisy and bias." Criticising the tournament's handling of the situation, the PCB said, 'The cancellation was not based on cricketing merit but on appeasing a specific nationalistic narrative. This sends an unacceptable message to the international sporting community." The board further stated that it could not allow its players to participate in events where 'the spirit of the game is overshadowed by skewed politics that undermine the very essence of sportsmanship and the gentleman's game." The WCL, which is co-owned by Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn, had earlier issued an apology for 'hurting the feelings of many and stirring emotions" following the cancellation of the group stage match. 'We sincerely apologise again for hurting the sentiments and hope people will understand that all we ever wanted was to bring a few happy moments to the fans," the WCL had said. The PCB, however, termed the apology 'farcical," accusing the organisers of caving to 'a specific nationalistic narrative." 'The WCL's apology for 'hurting the sentiments", whilst being farcical, inadvertently acknowledges that the cancellation was not based on cricketing merit, but rather on succumbing to a specific nationalistic narrative," the PCB said. 'This bias, masquerading as sensitivity, sends an unacceptable message to the international sporting community." PCB said it had no choice but to implement the ban. 'In light of this unfortunate development, which underscores a clear and intolerable pattern of external influence and a disregard for the principles of sporting neutrality, the Pakistan Cricket Board is compelled to take a firm stance. 'The PCB can no longer condone participation in an event where the fundamental principles of fair play and unbiased administration are compromised by external pressures," it added. Sources in the know of things have indicated that WCL's Indian promoters were already considering dropping the Pakistan team from future editions of the tournament.
