Nicky Henderson stuns ‘disastrous' Il Est Francais with £33,000 midweek smash-and-grab

Where next for the Grade 1 winner?
NICKY HENDERSON stunned the 'disastrous' Il Est Francais with a £33,000 midweek smash-and-grab.
Hendo's brilliant mare Aston Martini - whose previously biggest claim to fame was being a work horse alongside Constitution Hill - saw off the King George runner-up in a Listed Compiegne contest in France.

Aston Martini, who is rated 132 over hurdles, was getting 2lbs from Il Est Francais but could have given weight all round as she ran out a decisive ten-length winner.
It was yet another flop for 3-5 chance Il Est Francais, who looked a world-beater when winning the Kauto Star Novices' Chase at Kempton in 2023.
The Noel George and Amanda Zetterholm-trained chaser put in one of the greatest jumping performances the Surrey track has ever seen that day.
And he looked like the King George winner last Boxing Day only to be nutted late on by Banbridge in a Christmas cracker.

But a weak finish in the Ryanair saw questions over his future once more - after he bled when flopping at Auteuil last November.
Now doubts have surfaced all over again after he could only finish third in a race that should have been his for the taking.
Henderson - who is set to wave goodbye to 21 horses at the Doncaster sales later this month - couldn't care less, though.
His Aston Martini, who is closely related to former Grand National winner Rule The World, stamped her class all over this 2m3f race.

Sent off around 7-1, jockey Felix De Giles never had to get serious, merely easing out the mare to win comfortably.
Sun Racing's Matt Chapman was one of those commenting on Il Est Francais' latest nightmare.
And he suggested the horse could benefit from being sent to Henderson, with a change of scenery perhaps enough to reignite his career.
Chapman said on Sky: "You know what, if I was the owner I'd try a change of scenery.

"That's not to do with the way current connections train the horse, but I'd maybe send him to Nicky Henderson.
"Perhaps different surroundings, a different feed, whatever might make a difference to the medical condition - or whatever it is he has.
"Maybe it won't make a difference where he was, but I would just try something different and see if anyone else can sort out his issues.
"Because they have been going on some time now and, for me, it might time to try something different… or give up!

"But I wouldn't personally give up on him."
George didn't sound too disappointed afterwards, saying Il Est Francais would now enjoy a summer break before coming back in the autumn.
Another crack at the King George looks logical but he is out to 20-1 for that now.
Speaking after the win, Henderson said: "That was fantastic, a great performance, and we only came here to achieve one thing and that was to get some black type, as there were no more Listed races in Britain and we've had it in mind for some time.

"It nearly scuppered our plan to see Il Est Francais in the race, but she was amazing.
"It's a beautiful track and it was beautiful ground with so much grass on it, it's a great place.
"I was talking to Noel George and he said it wasn't just Il Est Francais in there and there was also some other very good horses in there.
"It's actually the second time we've won that race and we won it with Fixe Le Kap in 2017 and I rode here 50 years ago in a cross-country, which is a bit scary!"

England winger Abby Dow relishing World Cup opener in Sunderland

Part of Dow's family hail from Wearside and some will be in attendance for the game, including her 98-year-old grandfather, Gordon. 'My dad was born in Sunderland and my grandad lived there his whole life,' the England winger said. Abby Dow is looking forward to her return to Sunderland (Mike Egerton/PA) 'We did the long old trips from Berkshire up to Sunderland for our Easters and everything. 'What's really cool is my grandad, he's 98 and he's coming to the game. He's never been to the new Stadium of Light. He'll be there, so I'm very happy he's going to be there. 'He's been to one of my rugby games before, it's a bit hard for him to come, so my auntie's been really helpful organising it all. 'It'll be so nice to have a piece of family there, come back to Sunderland and experience it again. 'When I heard Sunderland I know everyone went 'no it's really cold up north!' but for me I'm so glad it's there because it feels like a little bit of home.' Dow's return to Sunderland is made all the more poignant with it being the birthplace of her father, who died in 2021. She said: 'I think with it being my dad's side and my dad can't be there, it's just nice that I can still have a part of him there. 'He was at every single one of my games growing up. He's still there in his family and that side of my family wanting to show support and be part of it. It's getting close now! ⏳ This time next week, England v USA. Stadium of Light, Sunderland. #RWC2025 Let's do this! 🤯 — Rugby World Cup (@rugbyworldcup) August 15, 2025 'You can't be here in a situation without everyone who has come before you, the parents who have busted a gut to drive around the country. 'In the women's game when I was growing up we were driving far, a lot, and my dad did everything. 'I remember him buying every single book he could find on how to coach rugby, he ended up being my coach and he did everything for me. 'It's so nice that although he's not there, it's nice his dad's there, his sister's there and we're able to celebrate that together.' This will be Dow's second World Cup after she made her tournament bow at the delayed 2021 edition, where England lost to New Zealand in the final. However, she believes the Red Roses are now a 'much stronger' team having unpacked what happened three years ago. Dow believes England are a 'different team' (Adam Davy/PA) Dow said: 'I remember coming back (after the 2021 World Cup), watching clips of the games looking at what we'd done and there were some girls crying. 'One thing (John Mitchell) has done really well is unpack and reset who we are, working out who we are individually, what we want to be as a team and we've combined them together in the route we needed to take. 'I think we're a very different team to what we were then, we're much stronger, more dynamic and bold to do what we want to do.'

Amy Jones: England in a good place ahead of Women's World Cup

Amy Jones believes England are 'tracking in the right direction' for the Women's World Cup despite being second best in white-ball series defeats to India. Charlotte Edwards' reign as head coach started with England clean-sweeping a weakened West Indies but they were brought back down to earth by India, who edged both the T20 and ODI series this summer. Jones, currently competing for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred, remains upbeat ahead of the 50-over World Cup in India, with England starting their campaign against South Africa on October 3 in Bengaluru. 'It will be a great challenge,' England's wicketkeeper told the PA news agency. 'Lottie has put a lot of energy in and as a group, we've put a lot of time into our ODI game and how we want to go about it. 'We showed real progress – even against India – the scores we were getting were consistently higher than we've had in the last couple of years. 'Even though we didn't win the one-day series, we're tracking in the right direction. I think we're in a good place and everyone is really excited for the challenge.' England were eliminated in the group stages of last year's T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates after suffering just one defeat, albeit following an abject display against the Windies. The 50-over equivalent is not as cut-throat, with England playing all seven teams in one group with the top four reaching the semi-finals, and Jones accepts it will be more a test of endurance this time. 'That was quite brutal, wasn't it,' Jones said, reflecting on the early T20 World Cup exit. 'I think a 50-over World Cup is a totally different challenge. 'It's a big challenge of fitness and a lot of off-field stuff comes into consideration. If we stick to what we know works for us and we adapt to conditions well, it should put us in good stead.' Jones, who has flourished after being promoted to open in ODIs alongside Tammy Beaumont, counts Australia all-rounder Ellyse Perry as a team-mate and her captain at the Phoenix. Perry, is regarded as one of the greatest women's cricketers of all-time, and Jones admitted she has tried to learn from her approach to the game. 'She's a brilliant player,' Jones added. 'The standard she sets is so high. She's just so level. You wouldn't be able to tell whether she's had the best game of her life or not done so well. 'I am quite level on the whole but I probably present more level than I am. It's easy to have a bad couple of games and lose confidence quickly. 'It's not that obvious with me externally but that is something I have improved; trying to stay level, try to keep confidence high and not overthink too much.'
