NYC car theft ring prompts police response in Queens
LINDENWOOD, Queens — Dozens of officers in full protective gear and brandishing long guns responded to a Queens home Wednesday morning to arrest a suspect in connection with a stolen car ring, according to New York State Police.
'It was state police, NYPD, Homeland Security,' said P.J. Marcel, who lives in the neighborhood, and watched the situation develop. 'They had drones, they had the robo-dog,' he said, referring to the NYPD's four-legged robot that can be used in hostage situations.
Marcel, who runs Howard Beach Dads, a neighborhood activist group, recorded video of the scene, which showed one man taken into custody in handcuffs.
State Trooper Vincent Florio confirmed that the response was in relation to a car theft ring operating in the five boroughs, on Long Island, and farther away in New York State.
Residents reported hearing flash grenades, and then seeing snipers with guns drawn at around 11:00 a.m.
After more than an hour, they said, a man wearing nothing but a pair of underwear was seen in police custody on 80th Street, between 153rd and 155th Avenues.
Two vehicles, a Dodge and a BMW, were seized at the scene.
Florio said this is an ongoing investigation, and that the State Police will provide more information at a news conference on Thursday.

Palmdale man killed in Phelan crash, potential hit-and-run charge pending
A Palmdale man died over the weekend from injuries he suffered in a possible hit-and run collision between his SUV and a big rig in Phelan last week, authorities said. Aaron Graham, 37, of Palmdale died at Arrowhead Regional Hospital Medical Center in Colton on Saturday, according to California Highway Patrol officials and San Bernardino County coroner's records. The crash took place about 10:05 p.m. Thursday along eastbound Highway 138, just east of Gramercy Road. Graham was driving a BMW X7 SUV east along Highway 138 prior to the wreck, CHP officials said. A Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling in front of the BMW. "For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the BMW crashed into the rear of the Freightliner's trailer," the agency said in a written statement. Graham was found unconscious inside his SUV and taken to a hospital by paramedics, where he remained until he succumbed to his injuries. Upon arrival, officers found the involved big rig had "fled the scene," according to the statement. Authorities found the big rig suspected to have been involved in the crash a short time later, just over a mile away along Hess Road. A man at the wheel of the truck, as well as another man riding as a passenger, were unhurt, according to the CHP. No arrests were made at the scene, but the investigation continued, including the possibility of a hit-and-run charge against the truck driver, officials added. Intoxicated driving was not suspected to be a factor. Home invasion and robbery rocks quiet Queens neighborhood. Here's the latest on the investigation.
Police are searching for two suspects who forced their way into a Queens home, tied up a family and robbed them. The brazen home invasion happened on Monday morning on a stretch of 12th Avenue in Whitestone, across the street from an elementary school. The NYPD said two men barged into the home around 9 a.m., one of them wearing an Amazon vest, and led the victims, a 42-year-old man, a 39-year-old woman, and three children, down to the basement and bound them with duct tape and zip ties. They then stole money and jewelry before taking off in the family's car, which detectives said was found less than a half a mile from the house. Neighbors unnerved by home invasion A neighbor said he was on his way to work when he saw a man pleading for help. "I just see this man come running out of his house with duct tape on him," he said. "He was definitely disheveled. He was definitely, like, scared, and he probably didn't know what just happened, himself." A school being is close proximity to such a violent crime struck a nerve as well. "All the kids are here. That's, like, really scary for, like, even the children," a woman said. Police are now looking into who the two suspects are and why they chose the house. Anyone with any information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
