NFL legend Peyton Manning shares thoughts on former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud

Former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud has had a pretty remarkable start to his NFL career. He was the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year and has led the Houston Texans to two straight playoff appearances. Of course, as with many sports fans, they want more and they want it now. Stroud took some criticism in his second season, as it seemed like a bit of a regression, but NFL legend Peyton Manning begs to differ. In an event with Fanatics, both Peyton and Eli Manning took the stage with Stroud, Bryce Young, and Celeb Williams. In a matter of just 63 seconds, Peyton heaped the praise on Stroud, shutting down anyone who thinks he isn't doing enough. "...I didn't win a playoff game 'til my sixth year. He's two for two." - Peyton Manning Manning talked about how hard it is to come into the league and play well as a rookie, and then began the compliments of how well the former Buckeye prepares in watching film and doing study. He continued on comparing Stroud's beginning to his own NFL start, saying, "He went to the playoffs in his second year. He was 22. Let's be careful saying it was a down year. I didn't win a playoff game 'til my sixth year. He's two for two." That's big time coming from one of the all-time NFL greats. While Stroud's numbers weren't as strong in year two, throwing for fewer yards and touchdowns and more than doubling his interceptions, he also had to navigate a number of injuries to his offensive line (he was sacked 52 times, which was second most in the NFL) as well as injuries to his top three receivers. Manning also points out that after such a strong rookie campaign, teams had more film to watch to make adjustments. The Texans are looking to build on the success of the past two seasons and have added some more firepower to the team. With a healthy roster, Stroud is poised to take another step forward in his third year.

Jason Kelce: Chiefs rookie Josh Simmons reminds me of Trent Williams

Chiefs first-round pick Josh Simmons was limited in his offseason work as he continues to work his way back from the knee injury that ended his final season at Ohio State, but the offensive tackle did enough work to make an impression on tight end Travis Kelce. Kelce said on his New Heights podcast that Simmons stood in as a scout team defensive end during a recent practice and that he felt 'I gotta come with it' when Simmons put his hands on him. Kelce's brother and co-host Jason knows quite a bit about playing the offensive line and said 'watching the tape [of Simmons] in college was absurd' and made a lofty comparison when sharing what player the rookie resembled in that tape. 'I've watched a lot of these linemen coming out the last few years,' Kelce said. 'This kid, I mean, he is the closest thing I've seen to like a Trent Williams — like that next level strength and athleticism. The only reason he fell to you guys is because of that injury.' Left tackle was a weak spot for the Chiefs last season and the dam broke once and for all in their Super Bowl loss to the Eagles. If Simmons can plug that hole, the Chiefs will be well positioned for another long run this year.

Johni Broome lands with the 76ers, two other Tigers ink NBA deals

Broome is the seventh Tiger to be taken in the NBA draft under Bruce Pearl. Thursday night was great for Auburn basketball, as three members of its Final Four squad have made deals with NBA franchises. Star forward Johni Broome was taken in the second round of the NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, becoming the seventh player of the Bruce Pearl era to be selected in the NBA draft. Broome joins the likes of Chuma Okeke, JT Thor, and Isaac Okoro as former Tigers drafted into the NBA, and becomes the first Tiger to be taken in the NBA draft since Jabari Smith Jr. and Walker Kessler were both selected in the 2022 draft. Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl praised the 76ers after their selection of Broome, complimenting the franchise on calling up one of the best players in the draft. 'Johni could have been the steal of the second round. At every level, he has exceeded expectations,' Pearl said in an Auburn Athletics press release. 'He wasn't supposed to be good enough to play at a high major and was the SEC Player of the Year and second for national player of the year. He's an elite competitor, coachable and as Charles Barkley said, he might be the best player in Auburn history based on what he accomplished for the program and university. Philadelphia made a great decision in drafting Johni.' Broome was not the only one to strike a deal with an NBA franchise on Thursday. Center Dylan Cardwell and forward Miles Kelly have also found homes at the next level, signing two-way contracts with the Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks, respectively.
