Alinea is helping Gen Z get started on their investing journey
Alinea, an investment platform geared toward younger Gen Z investors, has secured $10.4 million in April in its Series A funding round led by Play Ventures.
Alinea Invest Co-Founders and Co-CEOs Anam Lakhani and Eve Halimi sit down in studio with Wealth's Allie Canal to talk about their experiences interning on Wall Street and their platform's tools in educating and guiding their peers in investing within their means.

Gen Z focused wealth management platform Alinea secured more than $10 million in its latest funding round. Co-founded by former city and Goldman Sachs employees, the app aims to make investing accessible and understandable for Gen Z. Joining me now are co-founders Anum Lakhani and Eve Halimi. Guys, thank you so much for being here. I love what you've built. You guys met in college. You're friends. What inspired you to create this app catered specifically for Gen Z?
Eve and I both interned on Wall Street and we saw how so many of our friends just had no idea how to invest or how to get started. So we knew we wanted to build a platform that made wealth building more accessible.
And Eve with over a million users now, average age of 22, 92% women, 70% Gen Z, what trends are you seeing on how this generation thinks about investing?
So first, we talk to this user base in a way that they understand. So when we get on Tik Tok, uh, we're like, hey girlies, like this is how you should be investing your money. And what really resonates with them is our playlist feature, investing playlists that are based on themes or sectors that they really love.
And how does this differ from some of the more traditional institutional investors that we see out there?
So, not to be all buzz worthy, but with the advent of AI, our users and Gen Z want to be told exactly what to do that's personalized for them. Every single person has a different financial profile, and our vision with Alinea is to make sure that we're giving personalized advice to everyone based on their goals and their individual financial profiles.
So is that the main difference on how this differs from platforms like Robinhood and other types of retail investing apps out there?
Yes. We've basically built an AI coach called AI Allie, and she's like your financial bestie, and she guides you on what to invest in, how much to invest every month, uh, what to, yeah, put your money in and, and that personalization doesn't exist anywhere else.
AI Allie. I love that name. I'm curious how AI, it's accelerated very rapidly. How do you balance the risk reward there to not lose that personal human touch?
Yeah, our goal with Alinea is to make sure that you are understanding exactly what is happening with your money. And I think the biggest gap right now with Gen Z and new investors is the lack of financial literacy, knowledge, and confidence. And that's really where AI Allie comes in to teach you and explain to you how your money's working for you.
What are the biggest questions that you hear from Gen Z investors that are just starting this journey?
What do I invest in? How much do I invest? Uh, where do I put my money? Uh, this is how much I make. This is where I'm living. Like, give me a plan, a personalized plan for me and, and help me manage it.
You guys both have backgrounds at the big banks out there. How did that help shape this app and the creation of it?
I think it was a huge realization. We saw that everyone that worked on Wall Street tended to follow a similar profile when it came to demographics and everyone else just didn't understand all this jargon and the linguistics that come with the world of finance. And so we really wanted to break it down and make wealth building accessible to people like us and everyone around us.
Eve, how about you?
Yeah, I mean, I think we, on Wall Street, you see a lot of the rich getting wealthier and we wanted to give that, those tools to the masses, to people like us, and that's what Alinea's doing today.
Looking ahead, what is your vision for this app and how you hope to really continue to embrace this Gen Z catered investing approach?
Our vision is to make sure that every Gen Z in the US has a way to build wealth and to really live out their dreams. Alinea isn't just a financial app. We really say it's a way to live your dreams and have the freedom you want to have, and wealth is the way to get there.
Do you see this app maybe expanding into other financial services?
Absolutely. The goal is to build more financial tools to help, um, these Gen Z users, average age of 22, kind of grow their financial journey with us.
And what common misconceptions or fears, I guess, do you hear from Gen Z investors?
Yeah, how do I best set up my, my life so that I retire a millionaire? Like, what do I do so that when I retire, I have enough money or a million dollars in my bank account.
Do you find that Gen Z investors, they're more curious about how to play their money. I, I feel like I look at my younger brother and everyone just seems so more in tune, and I don't know if it's social media, if it's Tik Tok, Instagram. Are you seeing that within your own cohort?
Yeah, so what's really interesting is after GameStop, everyone knows they have to invest their money. They just don't know what's the right way to do it or how to do it. And that's really where Alinea comes in to guide you every step of the way and really personalize it to your financial profile.
That's interesting. The GameStop, the meme stock frenzy, that really was a turning point, you think?
Yeah. Yeah, I think if you go back 10 years ago, a lot of young people didn't even know that they should be investing. I think now that's really top of mind, especially with FinTalk, which is like financial TikTok, and all the memes. And so people are aware and now they need that knowledge, the plan, and the guidance, and that's what Alinea is really delivering on.

Many Americans — and particularly younger Americans — are feeling less confident about their financial situation due to tariff uncertainty. More than half of Americans (59%) said they are more concerned about their overall financial situations, up 14 points over March. Gen Z and millennial respondents' concerns about their financial situations increased by 17 points over the previous month, the BMO survey found. 'As tariff tensions rise, many Americans are feeling the pressure in their wallets,' Pratik Patel, head of U.S. wealth planning for BMO U.S. Wealth Management, told GOBankingRates. 'This is especially true for younger Americans, who often have less financial cushion and are more vulnerable to income disruptions.' There are steps Americans of all ages can take to feel more financially secure, despite whatever tariffs may be in effect. 'First, reinforcing the basics is key,' Patel said. 'Build or replenish an emergency fund, revisit household budgets and pay down high-interest debt to help build a buffer against rising costs. These foundational moves not only improve financial resilience but also restore a sense of control.' Be Aware: Many Americans also fear that they will struggle to cope with the possibility of even higher living costs and a more inflationary environment than we have now. Three-quarters of Americans (75%) reported an increase in worry over the cost of living, a 12-point increase over March. These fears may not be unwarranted — but there are ways to prepare. 'Consumers should prepare for the ripple effects of inflation,' Patel said. 'Tariffs tend to lead to higher prices on imported goods, which can impact everything from groceries to electronics. Adjusting spending habits — such as prioritizing needs over wants or switching to more affordable alternatives — can help manage these shifts.' Investors should also take preemptive action, Patel said. 'For investors, this may be a good time to review portfolios and consider inflation-protected assets or sectors that tend to perform well in volatile environments,' he explained. Staying informed and working with experts is also very important. 'Financial advisors and planners can offer tailored strategies, and keeping an eye on policy developments can help consumers and business owners anticipate changes and adapt early,' Patel said. 'For younger Americans, automating savings, investing in skills and using budgeting tools can go a long way in building long-term financial confidence.' Overall, Americans should not let their tariff fears get the best of them. 'With the right strategies and support,' Patel said, 'Americans can navigate tariff-related challenges and maintain confidence in their financial future.' Why Gen Z Is 'Enormously Attractive' to Employers

However, according to LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, Gen Z is "attractive" to employers for one key reason—they are "Generation AI." "You are generation AI. You are AI native. So, bringing the fact that you have AI in your tool set is one of the things that makes you enormously attractive," Hoffman said. Why It Matters Gen Z has quickly developed somewhat of a negative reputation in the workforce. A poll conducted by Redfield & Wilton Strategies for Newsweek last year found that 40 percent of U.S. adults said their Gen Z colleagues to be difficult to work with, and recent research found that Gen Z are likely to stretch the truth in job interviews. And the generation's entry into the workforce has come in tandem with the so-called "AI revolution." According to a recent study from KPMG, 66 percent of people regular use artificial intelligence (AI), and 83 percent believe AI will result in benefits. What To Know It's no secret that Gen Z grew up on technology, with smartphones often having been integrated into their life from an early age. As a result, they're more tech-savvy than other generations. Hoffman highlighted this in his LinkedIn post, writing "You were born into this shift. You're native to these tools in a way that older generations aren't. Lean into it. Teach others." Newsweek spoke to Dr. Fabian Stephany, an assistant professor for AI and Work at the University of Oxford, about how AI impacts job prospects for Gen Z. He shared with Newsweek some of the findings from his own research team, the Skill Scale Project. Stephany told Newsweek, citing research published in ScienceDirect, that "across all age groups, workers who can integrate generative AI into day-to-day tasks enjoy 23 percent higher wages on average, and they're roughly twice as likely to be offered perks such as paid parental leave." Dr. Keith Arundale of the Henley Business School in the United Kingdom told Newsweek via email that "AI is going to be ubiquitous." "Venture capitalists love it because it is disruptive—it is disrupting all sorts of sectors: healthcare, education, legal etc. and it has the ability to see massive growth and get the huge returns that VC want," Arundale said. And he has noticed it among his students, telling Newsweek they are "using AI very effectively in their assignments, to research and explore ideas," though he noted that they do not use it to write their essays for them. He said that in his school, they see AI as "essential training," for the future career of young people. "AI will stand them in very good stead," he said. However, this tech is not without its issues. Stephany told Newsweek that according to his team's data, Gen Z are the "heaviest chatbot users." "Our 2024 UK data show 30 percent of Gen Z (under 30) use a chatbot at least weekly versus 15 percent of the overall workforce," however, the skill set among these users varies wildly, with only 45 percent scoring highly on AI literacy, according to Stephany and the team's data. And according to Keri Mesropov, founder of Spring Talent Development, the AI story is not simple. "AI is only as powerful as the questions it is asked. And the durable human skills needed to reveal its true value including critical thinking, emotional intelligence, communication and nuanced problem-solving, are precisely the area in which many young professionals are still developing," she told Newsweek via email. Mesropov also noted that training matters. "Gen Zers who receive AI training and soft skill development will absolutely have a competitive edge." However, "we can't leave them to figure it out alone," Mesropov said. "Digital native" doesn't automatically mean "AI fluent." What Happens Next? So, what's next for Gen Z and AI? "Gen Z grads who blend domain savvy with AI fluency will carve out roles that didn't exist five years ago—prompt engineer, model auditor, workflow orchestrator. The bar is rising, but so are the opportunities for those who invest in deeper competence," Stephany told Newsweek. He added: "Comfort without mastery can backfire. Gen Z's early exposure is an advantage, but it isn't a golden ticket."
