What they're saying
Authorities discovered the body of Alexander Lucus Smart just after 1 p.m. Saturday near an abandoned home, his mother, Deanne Ewing, said. "He was found by an abandoned home. The car was by the abandoned home. He was still in his seatbelt and he was shot while inside the car five times, and they took his phone and his book bag," Ewing said.
The family became concerned after not hearing from Smart on Thursday or Friday. Ewing recalled their last conversation on Wednesday night. "All I know is that Wednesday night he left here and we were talking about him starting school and how his grades were, and of course, telling me he loved me," she said.
By Friday, Smart's phone had stopped receiving iMessages and calls went straight to voicemail, raising further alarm. Ewing said her son had aspirations of becoming a business owner, had recently started school, and was dedicated to his community. "I'm asking because my son was the most humane person with wanting to help the youth get off the street. He fed the homeless on a regular basis, and he just wanted to be the person to give back to his community," she said.
Smart also leaves behind a young daughter. "He has a one-year-old daughter that is going to grow up without a father," Ewing said.
As police continue their search for a suspect, Ewing hopes someone will come forward with information. "I have to live the rest of my life without my baby," she said. "Whoever it is, they took a life that had so much more to live and so much more to give."
What we don't know
Despite the arrests, many questions remain unanswered. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have stated that the information released so far is preliminary and subject to change. Details about the motive behind the shooting and the relationship between the suspects and the victim have not been disclosed.

Adams County man faces animal cruelty charges
ADAMS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – An Adams County man has been charged after authorities said his two 'out-of-control' dogs killed a neighbor's two toy poodles. The Natchez Democrat reported Dennis Wayne Donald, 57, was charged with two counts of cruelty to animals. He was released on a $50,000 bond. Man wanted for home repair fraud in Mississippi captured in Kansas Investigators said the incident occurred on Meadow Ridge Road on Saturday, April 12. Karren Holland Ewing, victims' assistance coordinator for the Adams County Sheriff's Office, said they received a report of the incident. She asked Deputy David Nations to accompany her to Donald's residence to deliver a summons to appear in court. Ewing told the newspaper that a dog attacked Nations when they arrived. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. When Donald appeared in court, Ewing said the judge told Donald that the two dogs that killed the toy poodles were going to have to be put down. She said Donald claimed to have already killed the dogs himself, but he later admitted he dumped them in the Union Church area. Ewing does not believe the dogs are in Union Church. Man stole valet keys, then $2 million in fancy cars from Miami Beach hotel, police say
A Fort Lauderdale man was caught on camera crawling into a hotel valet room to steal a handful of high-end cars worth nearly $2 million, according to Miami Beach police. Gregory Sean Yearty Jr., 24, was arrested on Monday after investigators say he stole four luxury vehicles—including a Lamborghini Urus and a Rolls-Royce Ghost—from the parking garage of the Setai Hotel on 2001 Collins Avenue. Surveillance video showed a man police identified as Yearty crawling on the ground to sneak into the valet key room around 2 a.m. on July 6, 2024. Once inside, he stood up, grabbed several key fobs, and crawled back out, apparently trying to avoid being noticed on camera. Police say Yearty then drove off with two stolen cars, accompanied by two unidentified men. He would return just before 6 a.m. to take two more cars. A rented black Cadillac Escalade was seen on surveillance video trailing and returning with the men during the thefts. The investigation began after multiple reports of stolen vehicles from hotel guests. Detectives used video footage, rental car records, and cell phone tracking data to identify Yearty. He later turned himself in at Miami Beach Police Headquarters. Yearty faces four counts of grand theft and burglary of an occupied structure. He is jailed at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Wednesday morning. It wasn't immediatly clear if he had retained an attorney. 'If you come to Miami Beach to victimize our community, you will be held accountable,' said Police Chief Wayne Jones in a statement.
