Penang cops nabs duo for processing and packaging drugs

Acting Penang police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin (third from left) pointing at the packeted MDMA during a press conference held at the state Contingent Police Headquarters in George Town, Penang. GEORGE TOWN: Police busted a drug trafficking duo suspected to be involved with methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) worth RM2.2mil. The men, aged 40 and 62, processed and packaged the drugs in gold and blue packets with stickers stating "Thank you for supporting my small business", fashioning it to look like sweet powdered drinks. Acting Penang police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the duo were arrested by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department during an anti-drug operation in George Town. "During the drug bust at a rental condominium in Gelugor, which was used to process the MDMA, we arrested the 62-year-old man. "We then arrested his accomplice (the 40-year-old man) in the same area," he said during a press conference held at the Penang Contingent Police Headquarters in George Town, Penang, on Friday (July 18). Police seized 150 packets and nine plastic bottles filled with MDMA powder weighing around 13.45kg. They also found two ecstasy pills, an Erimin 5 pill, as well as MDMA processing equipment. Comm Mohd Alwi said besides the arrests, the police seized two vehicles and money worth RM71,220. He said based on their investigations, the two have been trafficking drugs since March this year. "The drugs that we confiscated could be consumed 100,000 times or by 100,000 individuals. "We believe these packets were meant for local distribution at entertainment centres," he said. Comm Mohd Alwi said both men tested positive for drugs in their system and had prior drug-related arrests. The duo have been remanded for seven days until July 23 for further investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

[UPDATED] Peaceful assembly expected: Police ready for 'Turun Anwar' rally on July 26

KUALA LUMPUR: Police anticipate a turnout of between 10,000 and 15,000 people at the 'Turun Anwar' rally scheduled for July 26. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the organisers had already informed the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters of the planned gathering. He said that about 2,000 officers and personnel would be deployed to help manage the rally and ensure the safety of participants and the general public. "We will manage the situation to the best of our ability. Early projections from the Special Branch estimate an attendance of between 10,000 and 15,000 individuals. "I urge everyone to conduct themselves peacefully and in an orderly manner. Please behave responsibly and refrain from any form of provocation," he said at a press conference following the Handover of Duties ceremony between himself and former Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, who has been appointed Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director at Bukit Aman. Mohamed Usuf also issued a stern warning that anyone found inciting unrest would face firm action without compromise. He said that while the right to assemble and express one's views was protected, it must not be misused in ways that threaten public order, especially on sensitive 3R matters (race, religion, royalty). "If possible, avoid burning items or flares, and refrain from excessive use of loudspeakers, as seen in previous gatherings. "Let us all remember that safeguarding national security is a shared responsibility," he added. Mohamed Usuf also said that police anticipated crowds would begin assembling from as early as 11am at four designated locations before marching towards Dataran Merdeka at 2pm. At present, no road closures are planned, although this may change depending on developments on the day of the rally.

Public-facing police counter opens in Auckland CBD

Photo: RNZ / Simon Rogers A public-facing police counter has opened up in Auckland CBD on Friday - about six years since the city centre last had one. The new public counter at the 210 Federal Street Police base will replace the one at the College Hill Police Headquarters, which has been operating since police closed their CBD Vincent Street station in 2019. Acting deputy commissioner for the Northern Region, Jill Rogers, said it's fantastic to be opening their doors back in the heart of central Auckland once again. "We know that the public feel safer when they see our staff and our buildings," she said. "This has been something the community have been keen to see happen, and Police have been working hard at increasing our presence in recent years." Rogers said police will be able to deploy with ease across busy areas of the CBD - including Te Waihorotiu Station, which is expected to be the country's busiest train station when it opens in 2026. While police have occupied two floors at the 210 Federal Street base since 2020, this new development means police will take full occupancy of the building moving on. Rogers said the expanded police presence will make their 24/7 response in the city more effective. "We have seen the benefits since our Beat team moved to the site more than two years ago, "For example, foot patrols are up 91 percent in the city from July 2024 to April 2025, on the previous period," she said. Meanwhile, construction is ongoing at the building, with fit out work to be completed on some of the floors. The Auckland City District Police Headquarters will remain at the College Hill location.
