Yatra preparations: 513 housing units declared dangerous

Time of India4 hours ago

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) began preparations for the upcoming rath yatra on June 27 in the city. The corporation declared 513 residential units in various areas of the central and northern zones dangerous.
Orders were earlier given to vacate these hazardous buildings, but since they were not vacated, water and sewer connections of 190 units were cut off.
Instructions were given to prevent crowds from gathering on the balconies of hazardous buildings. Additionally, warning stickers are to be placed on dangerous buildings along the route. The TP committee meeting on Tuesday ordered the verification of structural stability certificates for all hoardings to prevent accidents during the monsoon season.
In May, unseasonal rains caused hoardings to fall at two locations, prompting orders for inspections.
Additionally, notices were issued to 1,308 housing units in different parts of the city, declaring them dangerous and instructing urgent repairs.
On Tuesday, a meeting of the Ekta Samiti (unity committee) was held at the main office of the civic body, attended by corporation officials, police officers, community leaders, and elected representatives.

The committee discussed conducting the rath yatra in a simple manner in view of the recent plane crash in the city. However, the final decision will be taken by the temple trustees organising the event. The state govt and the temple trustees will announce the decision after further discussions, said an AMC official.

Yoga Day prep stresses youth participation

Lucknow: This year's World Yoga Day is being marked by two campaigns. 'Yoga Unplugged' is aimed at youth participation in the event, while 'Harit Yoga', focuses on environmental sustainability. Yoga Day is on Jun 21 but is marked by week-long activities in the state. A major initiative will be to popularise yoga as a way of life, for which yoga parks are being developed across the state, with participation of local bodies such as municipalities and gram panchayats. A govt spokesperson said three yoga parks will be developed in districts with divisional headquarters and two in all other districts. District magistrates have been instructed to identify suitable sites, formulate plans in coordination with department of urban development and forward plans to govt. "Each park will be developed with a green, clean and peaceful environment, accessible to all sections of society. The parks will include facilities such as trained yoga instructors, open gyms, resting spaces, clean drinking water and adequate lighting. The aim is to create inclusive public spaces where citizens of all ages, including senior citizens, women and youth, can gather for regular yoga practice," the official said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New York: New Windows Available If You Own A Home In These Zip Codes Smart Lifestyle Trends Learn More Undo Meanwhile, under 'Yoga Unplugged', govt will organise creative, competitive and social media-driven events to ensure youth participation. The campaign is being run across govt AYUSH colleges, vocational training institutes, universities, and degree colleges in a bid to reach out to students directly. Events under the programme will include elocution contests on benefits of yoga and mental well-being, live yoga demonstrations by students showcasing various asanas and meditation techniques, rangoli, debate and poster-making contests highlighting relevance of yoga, award ceremonies to honour top performers at the state level and social media promotion of events, visuals and results using hashtags like #YogaUnplugged. Harit Yoga campaign will strive to bring together discipline of yoga with conservation of nature, spreading the idea that "true yoga is harmony of self-discipline and environmental protection". The message will be reinforced through open-air yoga sessions at scenic natural sites like riverbanks, lakesides, parks, and Amrit Sarovars, plantation drives at every yoga gathering, cleanliness campaigns before and after yoga events by students and local residents, and community involvement through participation by panchayats, local bodies, NSS/NCC cadets and school children.

Buildings and water remit cut, PWD has only roadworks now

Panaji: State govt recently carved out a drinking water department (DWD) from the public works department (PWD). Now, the state has issued an order handing the responsibility of the buildings division of the PWD entirely to the principal secretary of the department. With drinking water and buildings sections' functioning fully separated, the PWD has been for the first time left to deal with only roads and bridges. The order was issued this month to refer all files relating to the buildings division directly to the secretary or the principal secretary of the PWD for scrutiny or clearance. It was felt by govt that this will ensure timely and effective execution of maintenance works of govt buildings. The order states that the principal chief engineer of the PWD will now handle files only pertaining to roads (including bridges), besides operating as the department head for all administrative purposes. 'The decision was taken to fast-track the processing of files as maintenance works are urgently needed due to risk during monsoons to govt buildings, many of which are old,' said a source. The PWD itself has been internally restructured by placing eight staffers to work exclusively for the drinking water department and another eight for the buildings section. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Преносим лазерен заваръчен пистолет, 50% отстъпка в нов магазин HEO Купете сега Undo However, the drastic restructuring is causing worry among many staffers, sources said. 'Staffers are worried that allotting them to a different department may affect their prospects for promotion etc, as there is no clarity on these aspects yet,' a source said. 'It can affect staff motivation. They do not know where they stand in the hierarchy after the restructuring.' The source added, 'The DWD and the PWD will bifurcate fully eventually and a separate budget allotment for the DWD has been announced in the budget. However, revenue distribution between the departments also needs to be sorted out.' Officials said that with a budget of over Rs 800 crore for the DWD, it is yet to get a separate budget head for accounting purposes. Also, clarity is needed to be established on administrative rules in tune with general finance rules to avoid chaos, the source said.

Kanpur improved air quality ranking: Kanpur has made a significant leap in the clean air survey ranking for the year 2024-25 by jumping to the 5th rank from its 17th spot in 2023-24, said municipal commissioner Sudhir Kumar during a review meeting of 'Air Pollution Quality improvement' conducted by additional secretary and financial advisor to the Environment & forest ministry Praveen Kumar Pandey here on Tuesday. During the briefing, the municipal commissioner said that the KMC had removed encroachment from the Green belt and planted saplings there using the 'Miyawaki system' across 110 hectares of land. Further ongoing work include the waste to wonder park, ITMS, and installation of Jersy Barriers. The KMC has deployed mechanical road sweepers and water sprinklers in response to pollution in the city.
