Kanpur improved air quality ranking: Kanpur has made a significant leap in the clean air survey ranking for the year 2024-25 by jumping to the 5th rank from its 17th spot in 2023-24, said municipal commissioner Sudhir Kumar during a review meeting of 'Air Pollution Quality improvement' conducted by additional secretary and financial advisor to the Environment & forest ministry Praveen Kumar Pandey here on Tuesday.
During the briefing, the municipal commissioner said that the KMC had removed encroachment from the Green belt and planted saplings there using the 'Miyawaki system' across 110 hectares of land. Further ongoing work include the waste to wonder park, ITMS, and installation of Jersy Barriers.
The KMC has deployed mechanical road sweepers and water sprinklers in response to pollution in the city. Beautification efforts of Nana Rao Park and Kargil Park are underway using waste material, he added.
The additional secretary later instructed the officials to adhere to the security standards and emphasised directions to improve the environment. The KMC officials attended the review meeting.

Tech snag delays departure of British Navy fighter jet
Thiruvananthapuram: The British Royal Navy F-35 fighter jet that made an emergency landing on Saturday night remains stranded at Thiruvananthapuram airport. A snag in the hydraulic system of the aircraft is delaying its departure. The fighter jet is from the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, sailing around 100 nautical miles off the Kerala coast. Technicians arrived by British Navy helicopter MJS-101 from the aircraft carrier the same night. Sources said that the fighter jet, which was ready to leave on Tuesday morning after repairs, was further delayed. The aircraft was attended to by Royal Navy personnel in the last two days. Soon after the emergency landing, the pilot was moved to the apron control at the airside. "As he was the only personnel with the aircraft, he wanted to stay within sight of it. He was assigned a seat at the apron control, positioned in a way that allowed him to keep watch on the aircraft until other personnel landed in a helicopter from the aircraft carrier," an official said. There were rumours that he sat on a chair near the aircraft. Kolhapur: A woman software engineer working in the US with her husband on Monday enrolled her seven-year-old son, Vihan, in a zilla parishad school in Sangli district's Atpadi to learn Marathi, his mother tongue. Vihan will live with his maternal uncle and attend school with his cousins. Vihan's mother, Bharati Vijaykumar Shelke, told TOI that the boy was studying in a North Carolina-based school, where where the neighbourhood primarily consisted of English-speaking residents. "At the start, he could speak a few words in Marathi. But we were shocked to see him forgetting his mother tongue as he grew older. We wanted him to learn Marathi and felt this was the right age for it. We chose a ZP Marathi school for its focus on quality education and fewer distractions.
