TDB to take over unniyappam production at Kottarakkara Mahaganapathy temple

The move comes in the wake of a report by the board's vigilance wing, which found irregularities in the preparation and distribution of the Unniyappam. The board clarified that media reports claiming the cancellation of the decision to take over production are incorrect.
TDB officials stated that the aim is to ensure quality offerings for devotees. A similar measure was adopted during the previous Sabarimala pilgrimage season, when the board directly handled the production of Appam and Aravana at Nilakkal, Erumeli, and Pandalam Devaswom.

‘Navagraha' temple at Sabarimala consecrated
SABARIMALA: The newly-built 'Navagraha' temple at Malikappuram was consecrated near Sabarimala temple on Sunday. The new temple, built on a traditional architectural method with brass roof-top, was consecrated by thantri Kandararu Rajivaru between 11am and noon. The ceremony, which began with the installation of all nine 'Navagraha' idols, concluded with 'kumbabhishekam' on the 'thazhikakkudam' of the temple. Travancore Devaswom Board president P S Prasanth, member Ajikumar and devaswom commissioner Sunilkumar attended the ceremony. 'Kalabhabhishekam' was the special ritual performed at the temple. Other rituals including 'udayasthamana pooja' were held. The temple was closed at 10pm. The hill shrine will be reopened on July 16 for the five-day monthly pooja for the Malayalam month of Karkidakam.

Devotees question fee collection for immersing ashes in Periyar
Kochi: Travancore devaswom board (TDB) began imposing a fee on devotees who immerse ashes, a ritual followed by Hindus after cremation, in Periyar River adjacent to Aluva Mahadeva Temple. The decision to impose a fee of Rs 50 is being questioned by devotees. Fee system came into effect on July 1. On average, around 50 people from various parts of the state arrive at Manappuram daily to perform this ritual, whereas the number increases on religiously important days. Devotees have started questioning TDB for imposing a fee for immersing ashes in a river that falls under the jurisdiction of irrigation department. At the same time, people's representatives feign ignorance about TDB decision. "We heard it from news reports. We don't have any other details. Moreover, the issue doesn't come under the purview of Aluva municipality," a municipal councillor said. It is learnt that TDB has set up a counter at the site to collect fee using temporary staff. Though TOI tried to contact temple administrative officer over phone, the official didn't respond. According to devotees, TDB takes responsibility for cleaning bathing ghats and riverbanks during major events such as Shivaratri and Karkidaka Vavu, but riverbanks remain dirty with garbage on normal days.
