T-Mobile has already given phone buyers a reason not to pick any other carrier this year
When T-Mobile smashed a new uplink speed record last week, it only briefly mentioned UL Tx Switching, though this underemphasized detail should actually give you even more reason to be excited. The company's new speed record may be little more than a marketing claim, but Release 17 UL Tx Switching is the real deal. This tech allows smartphones to make the most of their hardware for sending data, improving reliability and efficiency by ensuring the most optimal path is used at any given moment.
T-Mobile may be veering away from its Uncarrier ethos, but the carrier very much continues to deliver on the technological front. Uplink speed, or the rate at which data is sent from a device, is the next big thing, according to T-Mobile . For the longest time, everyone obsessed over download speeds, but in an age where many are uploading data more frequently, uplink speed is no longer a metric to be discussed in passing. It's as important as download speed for power users, gamers, and content creators these days.
T-Mobile set an uplink speed record of 550 Mbps in the sub-6 GHz spectrum using 5G Advanced technology. The company was the first to do a live demo of the R17 UL Tx Switching feature on a commercial site. This achievement comes a month after the deployment of 5G Advanced by the carrier. 5G Advanced is a new category of 5G and will allow for better network performance and capacity, resulting in higher speed, reliability, and efficiency.
Now, as Mike Thelander, president of Signals Research Group notes (as reported by Fierce Wireless) T-Mobile likely conducted its speed test in a carefully selected position near a cell site. That's not reflective of where most users use their phones though, so an average user may not be able to hit this peak speed. While that doesn't make the record any less impressive, it means that you may not necessarily notice faster uploads. Besides, not many applications require such insane speeds.
The more interesting detail here, according to Thelander, is uplink transmit switching.
—Mike Thelander, president of Signals Research Group, May 2025, UL Tx switching is a feature that lets a device dynamically switch between different uplink paths. The use of multiple uplink technologies, such as carrier aggregation and MIMO, allows the tech to get the most out of a phone's hardware. This essentially expands uplink capacity and boosts speed by enabling seamless switching and a combination of different frequencies. T-Mobile likened it to "taking the 5G superhighway and adding new faster lanes with spare capacity for traffic to zoom faster than ever."
T-Mobile hasn't started deploying this feature yet but Thelander expects it to be available in some markets soon. It's also not clear which phones support the tech. Thelander implies that most modern handsets don't, but some upcoming smartphones might.
Since the feature was defined in 3GPP Release 17, which isn't the newest 5G standard any longer, most current Android flagships and the iPhone 16 family may support it, but that's just a guess on our part.
In any case, Thelander seems to suggest that current phones don't support R17 UL Tx Switching. If you consider yourself a power user and seek exceptional uplink performance, you will want to stick with T-Mobile , despite whatever grievances you may have with it. This is especially true if upcoming flagships will support the feature, as it will be of no use on other networks.

nubia Z70S Ultra review
It's been some six months since the last Z-series nubia, so it's time for a new one - hence the Z70S Ultra. Another installment in the brand's camera-centric lineup, this one brings a larger sensor to go with the signature 35mm lens, some extra battery capacity, and yet another fresh restyling. For this latest edition, the nubia gets a 1/1.3" sensor for its main camera - the one with the 35mm lens. In a way, that's as good as the vivo X200 Ultra, and it's quite the testament to where the Z70S Ultra's aspirations are - in theory, at least. The previous generation had a smaller sensor (1/1.56"), but also an f/1.6-f/4.0 variable aperture lens. The aperture is now fixed at f/1.7 on this S model. The telephoto and the ultrawide remain unchanged, but the under-display selfie camera is now a little better at gathering light. The other new development is the increase in battery capacity - a cool 10% more compared to the Z70 Ultra. And, well, that just about completes the list of upgrades, really. Then there's the next round of restyling, the Z70S Ultra switching to a leather-like retro-looking texture for its back panel. It's no Starry Night, but it's pretty special in its own right. AT&T launches new plan tailored specifically for certain customers
AT&T has just added a new plan to its Unlimited lineup. Unlike the main plans the US carrier offers, the newly introduced AT&T 55+ plans is tailored specifically for seniors. According to the carrier, AT&T 55+ was designed to meet the needs of 55+ customers, providing easy access to technology with the added security of ActiveArmor built in. AT&T ActiveArmor promises to give customers 24/7 protection. Included for free in the AT&T 55+ plans, ActiveArmor detects and prevents threats, but also features additional security apps and solutions designed to stop fraudsters in their tracks. Now, the juicy part is that the AT&T 55+ plan costs $40/month for one line or $35/month for two lines. The latter price is available after discounts with this specific plan and eligible Autopay & Paperless bill (taxes and fees extra). It's also important to mention that customers 55+ who opt for 2 wireless lines to get the discounted price will also be offered AT&T Internet 300 or Internet Air for a lower price. The AT&T 55+ experience at a glance: Bundled offer: 2 wireless lines + AT&T Internet 300 or AT&T Internet Air for $99/month (plus taxes and fees). Internet 300 or Internet Air for $99/month (plus taxes and fees). Unlimited talk, text, and data in and between the U.S., Canada and Mexico. 10GB of hotspot data. AT&T ActiveArmor protection. AT&T launches the cheapest plan for seniors in the US | Image credit: AT&T Obviously, AT&T may temporarily slow data speeds if the network is busy, so even if customers get unlimited data, speed will surely be throttled down to 2G same goes for the hotspot data. Customers who exceed the 10GB included in the plan will be getting speeds slowed to maximum 128kbps, which is almost nothing in this day and age. – Jenifer Robertson, executive VP & GM, AT&T Mass Markets, June 2025 AT&T is not the only US carrier that offers a plan specifically designed for seniors. T-Mobile has the Essential Choice 55 plan that costs $60 per month, while Verizon's 55+ plan costs $62/month per line or $84/month per two lines. This basically makes AT&T 's new 55+ plan the best plan for seniors in the United States, at least when it comes to price. Still, it's worth mentioning that both Verizon and T-Mobile 's 55+ plans have more data included. Switch to Total 5G+ Unlimited 3-Month plan or Total 5G Unlimited and get a free iPhone.
