Civil servant injured in group assault at Tawau restaurant

TAWAU: A civil servant sustained injuries after being assaulted by a group of men at a restaurant near Jalan St Patrick, in the Fajar town centre, early yesterday morning.
In the 12.40am incident, the 30-year-old victim was attacked by more than 10 individuals while having drinks at the premises.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin said the victim claimed he was struck with a glass and saw an unknown individual brandishing a knife during the attack.
"The victim, who works for a local government authority, said he was unaware of the reason for the assault and has since lodged a police report," he said in a statement.
Following the report, police arrested four local men, aged between 17 and 29, in a series of separate operations yesterday.
The first arrest, involving a 27-year-old man with four prior criminal records related to drugs and mischief, was made at 11.30am at Jambatan 3 Melati, Kampung Pukat, Tanjung Batu Laut.
The second suspect, aged 29, was detained at the Takada Commercial Centre at 12.15pm, while the remaining two — a 17-year-old and a 26-year-old man — were arrested at 12.45pm.
"One of the suspects has five previous convictions under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, while the other two have no criminal record," he added.
The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.

Unemployed man gets death penalty for murder of 3-year-old in Langkawi

KUALA LUMPUR: The Alor Setar High Court has sentenced a 44-year-old unemployed man to death for the murder of a three-year-old girl in Langkawi six years ago. Ramlan Abdul Rashid was found guilty of killing Nur Aisyah Aleya Abdullah at a hospital staff quarters between 9 am and 10 am on Feb 23, 2019, under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Justice Evawani Farisyta Mohammad, in her written judgment published on the judiciary's website on July 31, stated that the victim died from prolonged physical abuse. The court noted the accused showed no remorse and callously disposed of the child's body in a forested area at Gunung Raya without proper burial rites. Forensic evidence confirmed the skull and two teeth found at the scene belonged to the victim. The judge emphasized that the accused, entrusted with the child's care, failed in his duty to protect her. The victim's mother had left her daughter in Ramlan's care while working at a food stall. In January 2019, she moved to a hostel, leaving the child with the accused. A month later, she reported her daughter missing after failing to locate her during a visit. Ramlan initially claimed he handed the girl to another person but refused to disclose details. Police later discovered the remains in March 2019. Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Rizal Fadzil led the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer Ai Cha Ran. - Bernama

Man found dead near railway tracks was strangled, say Hulu Selangor police

HULU SELANGOR: A post-mortem has confirmed that a man whose body was discovered near railway tracks in Sungai Serian, Kalumpang, died from strangulation. Hulu Selangor district police chief Supt Ibrahim Husin stated that the victim's identity remains unknown, and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. 'There were strangulation marks on the victim's neck, believed to have been caused by a rope. The marks are suspected to match the rope (resembling a chain) worn around the victim's neck,' Ibrahim said in a statement. The body was found by a passerby at around 10.30 am yesterday, with hands and feet bound and the head wrapped in cloth secured with black and white tape. Preliminary investigations suggest the body was likely thrown from the 11.15-metre-high Kampung Sungai Serian bridge. Police estimate the victim had been dead for over four days, and no identification documents were found. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact investigating officer Insp Mohamad Fadli Abdul Aziz at 03-6064 1222 or the nearest police station. - Bernama
