Pollution in Delhi stretch of Yamuna spiked in June, as per DPCC
The 54-km Delhi stretch of the Yamuna is one of the most polluted river stretches in the country. Over the past three decades, the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal have passed several orders directing authorities to clean the river.
The levels of faecal coliform (microbes from human and animal excreta) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) have increased at Asgarpur, the point where the Yamuna exits the city, as per the DPCC report.
BOD is the amount of dissolved oxygen consumed by microorganisms to decompose organic matter. A higher BOD implies a greater pollution load.
In June, the faecal coliform level in Asgarpur was found to be 24,00,000 MPN (most probable number) per 100 ml, which was 4,800 times the desired limit of 500 MPN/100 ml considered safe for bathing, as per the Central Pollution Control Board.
In May, the level was 23,00,000 MPN/100 ml, 4,600 times the desirable limit.
Faecal coliform levels at multiple other points of the river have also shown an increase.
The level of faecal coliform and BOD at Palla, where the river enters Delhi from Haryana, has also shown an increase in June compared with May, suggesting that the river was more polluted when it entered the national capital.
However, at all points in Delhi where water samples were tested, except Palla, faecal coliform levels were found to be above the desirable and the 'maximum permissible' levels.
'The pollution level is rising and data show that there is an increase in the amount of untreated sewage entering the river,' said Sushmita Sengupta, senior programme manager (water), Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).
In May, a report by CSE, a Delhi-based research and advocacy group, noted that the levels of faecal coliform in the Yamuna, an indicator of the sewage load in a river, were so high in Delhi that the river stretch in the Capital was practically a 'sewage canal'.

Aarthi Scans to invest Rs 350 crore, expand strongly in North India by 2030
Chennai-based Aarthi Scans and Labs, a leading diagnostic imaging services provider in South India, is preparing to aggressively expand its presence in the North Indian market. The company plans to add 90 per cent of its upcoming centres in the region by 2030. As part of this expansion, it will invest around Rs 350 crore to increase its total number of branches from 85 to around 150 over the next five years. Now in its 25th year of operations, Aarthi Scans is also planning to launch an initial public offering (IPO) within the next three years. Simultaneously, the company is preparing to foray into the fitness diagnostics segment to cater to a wider audience. 'We are planning our IPO in the next three years. Every year, we are clocking a growth of around 20 per cent. In FY25, our turnover was around Rs 320 crore, which is slated to cross Rs 375 crore during the current financial year,' said V Govindarajan, founder of Aarthi Scans and Labs. The company has set a target of achieving a turnover of Rs 600 crore in the next four to five years. Pan-India footprint with a northern focus Aarthi Scans currently operates 85 branches and 150 collection centres across 18 cities in 11 states, including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, Gujarat, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Haryana. Around 25 branches are located in Chennai alone, with 18 clustered in and around the city. 'Our aim is to add an average of around 10 branches every year. Within three months, we will be starting operations in Uttar Pradesh as well. Of the total branch expansions in the next five years, 90 per cent will be in North India,' Govindarajan said. From outpatient clinic to diagnostic leader Govindarajan entered the healthcare sector in the late 1980s by starting a small clinic, Aarthi Clinic—named after his daughter—for his doctor wife in Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu. The family launched a multispeciality hospital in 1995, followed by a foray into diagnostics in 2000 and the opening of its first centre in Chennai's Vadapalani in 2003. Today, Aarthi Scans is managed by a family-run team of radiologists: Prasanna Vignesh, Aarthi Prasanna, and Arunkumar Govindarajan. AI-led transformation and new service verticals Arunkumar, Govindarajan's son, is spearheading the company's technological transformation. From X-rays and CT scans to brain volumetric analysis, the company has adopted artificial intelligence (AI) across several operations. 'AI is making the job of radiologists easier. Globally too, India has adopted AI better than even some developed nations,' said Arunkumar. He added that the company is in the process of launching fitness diagnostics, a fast-growing segment in India. Private equity talks and future outlook Aarthi Scans came into the spotlight in 2022 when reports emerged that Tata Capital Growth Fund, a mid-market private equity fund, was in talks to acquire a minority stake in the company. 'We were in talks with Tata Capital during Covid. We were doing some extremely good business and wanted to rope in a minority investor. Finally, the valuation did not match,' Govindarajan said.

Early Smartphone Use Linked To Suicidal Thoughts, Aggression In Youth: Study
New Delhi: Children who own a smartphone before the age of 13 are more likely to experience poorer mental health and well-being in early adulthood, according to a global study of more than 100,000 young people released on Monday. The study, published in the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities, found that 18- to 24-year-olds who had received their first smartphone at age 12 or younger were more likely to report suicidal thoughts, aggression, detachment from reality, poorer emotional regulation, and low self-worth. Smartphones give early social media access and increase the risks of cyberbullying, disrupted sleep, and poor family relationships by adulthood, the team said. "Our data indicates that early smartphone ownership -- and the social media access it often brings -- is linked with a profound shift in mental health and well-being in early adulthood," said lead author neuroscientist Dr. Tara Thiagarajan, the founder and Chief Scientist of US-based Sapien Labs. Thiagarajan called for urgent action to protect the mental health of future generations, as their symptoms are not the traditional depression and anxiety, and can be missed by studies using standard screening procedures. The researchers urged policymakers to adopt a precautionary approach, similar to regulations on alcohol and tobacco, by restricting smartphone access for under-13s. They also called for mandating digital literacy education and enforcing corporate accountability. In recent years, several countries have banned or restricted the use of cell phones in institutions, including France, the Netherlands, Italy, and New Zealand. Several states in the US have also passed legislation requiring schools to have policies that at least limit access to smartphones for children. For the study, the team at Sapiens mapped the data on 100,000 young adults using the Mind Health Quotient (MHQ) -- a self-assessment tool that measures social, emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being -- to generate an overall mental health score. Young adults who received their first smartphone before age 13 had lower MHQ scores, with scores progressively declining the younger the age of first ownership. Younger ownership was also linked with diminished self-image, self-worth, and confidence, and emotional resilience among females, and lower stability, calmness, self-worth, and empathy among males. "Our evidence suggests that childhood smartphone ownership, an early gateway into AI-powered digital environments, is profoundly diminishing mental health and well-being in adulthood, with deep consequences for individual agency and societal flourishing," Thiagarajan said.

Synopsis To combat rising lifestyle diseases, the Indian government, in collaboration with ICMR-NIN and FSSAI, will launch a nationwide campaign promoting reduced sugar and oil consumption. Posters in schools, colleges, and government offices will advise limiting daily intake to 25 grams of sugar and 30 grams of oil, ghee, or butter. Soon, posters advising Indians to cut down on sugar and oil intake will be seen across schools, colleges and central government offices. These model posters are designed by Hyderabad-based ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in collaboration with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).According to a TOI report, the daily cap is now 25 grams of sugar (about five teaspoons) and 30 grams of oil, ghee, or butter (roughly six teaspoons), based on a standard 2,000-calorie diet. These changes come as part of the Union health ministry's latest move to fight growing cases of lifestyle-related illnesses like diabetes and heart problems. A senior NIN scientist told TOI that earlier, the limit for sugar was 50 grams per day, but it's now been halved to 25 grams due to rising health concerns. 'One 500 ml soft drink is enough to exceed your daily sugar limit,' he posters will be put up not just in government bodies but also in CBSE and ICSE schools across the country. This is especially important for students, as India has a large adolescent population that is increasingly exposed to high-fat, high-sugar dietician Dr Swetha A, also from Hyderabad, pointed out that sugar and oil are often consumed without us realising it. 'Sugar is added to tea, coffee, and sometimes even to vegetables. Foods like biscuits, honey and processed snacks sneak in more sugar,' she said. She added that oils too are hidden, in nuts, seeds, dairy and even processed items. 'People also add ghee to chapatis, rice, and dough. That adds to the total fat unknowingly,' she said.
