Published on: Sun, May 25, 2025 Text Size: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah vice president Datuk Masiung Banah hinted that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) may contest at least 52 seats in the upcoming 17th Sabah state election. This, he said is pending approval from the coalition's chairman who is also Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. The remaining 21 seats could be allocated to national parties aligned with GRS. Speaking at a GRS tour event in Kampung Mananam attended by over 700 people, the Gagasan Rakyat Vice President expressed confidence in the strength of local candidates under GRS, citing past rejection of the opposition by voters. The Kuamut assemblyman said GRS would be cautious in forming alliances, referring to the failed "Langkah Kinabalu" coup in January 2023. However, he noted that the current cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) is strong and could continue into the polls, potentially enabling them to form the state government again. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? No worker rep from MTUC to ILC: Ministry

Published on: Sunday, June 08, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 08, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: PUTRAJAYA: There is no worker representation in the Malaysian delegation to the 113th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland, due to there being no official leadership in the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), said the Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma). It stressed, in a statement, that claims that the Government deliberately excluded the participation of MTUC representatives were unfounded, misleading and malicious. Advertisement Kesuma added that the Court of Appeal had on Feb 21 ordered the MTUC to hold fresh leadership elections within 90 days, which will be managed by a joint special committee (JBK). 'The election that was supposed to be held in May has been postponed to Aug 10, resulting in MTUC not having an official leadership to represent workers on any official platform, including the ILC,' it added. According to Kesuma, the JBK that was specifically established to handle the re-election process has no mandate to make policy decisions or nominate representatives for international forums. 'In fact, the nomination of names by the JBK to the ILC is outside the jurisdiction granted by the court and had been objected to by several MTUC affiliate members,' it clarified. Advertisement Kesuma also emphasised that the selection of the Malaysian delegation to the ILC was made transparently based on the guidelines of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) as well as legal advice from the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) regarding MTUC's current status. It added that the Government remains committed to its principle of tripartite and supports the rights of a valid workers' union's participation on the global platform. 'Kesuma calls for the MTUC re-elections to be promptly resolved to protect the image of the workers' union movement and ensure Malaysia's complete participation in the ILC next year,' it said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kyiv rejects Russia's claims that Ukraine is delaying exchange of soldiers' bodies

KYIV: Russia's claims that Ukraine is delaying exchange of soldiers' bodies are untrue, Ukrainian officials said on Saturday, urging Moscow to stop 'playing dirty games' and return to constructive work. Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky said on Saturday that Ukraine had unexpectedly postponed exchanging prisoners of war and accepting the bodies of killed soldiers for an indefinite period. Russia and Ukraine held the second round of peace talks in Istanbul on Monday where they agreed to exchange more prisoners - focusing on the youngest and most severely wounded - and to return the bodies of 12,000 dead soldiers. 'Today's statements by the Russian side do not correspond to reality or to previous agreements on either the exchange of prisoners or the repatriation of bodies,' Ukraine's state-run Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said on the Telegram messenger. It said that the agreement on the repatriation of the bodies had indeed been reached, but that no date had been agreed upon and that 'the Russian side had resorted to unilateral actions' that had not been agreed within the framework of the process. Medinsky said Russia had also handed over to Ukraine the first list of 640 prisoners of war, categorised as 'wounded, seriously ill and young people,' in order to begin the exchange. Ukraine, in turn, stated that it had also handed over the names for exchange, while Russia's lists did not correspond to the agreed approach as to which prisoners would be prioritised in the exchange.
