Shane Enright: Now, more than ever, Kerry need to show togetherness and doggedness

One thing is for sure, if Kerry are going to win an All-Ireland this year they will have to do it the hard way. That starts Saturday against Cavan
Jack O'Connor summed up Kerry's performance against Meath in Tullamore on Saturday evening perfectly in his post-match interview when he said they lacked energy, intensity and aggression.
It was as poor a performance as we have seen from Kerry in quite a number of years in the championship. They were missing some key players with the exclusion of Brian O Beaglaoich and the late withdrawal of Seanie O'Shea adding to their already extensive injury woes but that isn't an excuse to mask just how poor Kerry were.

‘The 20 best players': Irish AFL combine return is on the cards

A return for the Australian Football League-run Combine is in the works, with hopes one will take place in Dublin this December. Pre-covid, the AFL regularly hosted a European Combine in Ireland. Players went through a series of athletic tests as AFL scouts watched on. James Madden (Dublin), Deividas Uosis (Kerry) and Ross McQuillan (Armagh) all made the move Down Under after impressing at the event. There was a change of tack post-covid. Several kicking sessions took place, but the best prospects travelled to Australia to take part in their official Combine. Ireland U20 rugby international and former Dublin minor David Colbert and Derry's Eoin McEvoy travelled to Melbourne last year. In 2023, four Irish players took part. Speaking to 3AW's The AFL Irish invasion podcast, Irish AFL recruiter Frank Duffy confirmed the return of a Combine is in development. 'My understanding is the AFL are committed to investing in Ireland and that they will give us the go ahead to run a Combine roughly around the first weekend of December. It is an opportunity for the clubs to come over. 'We are offering the 20 best players in the country for both men and women, we are saying, these are the best. We invite you to come over and you will see them with your own eyes.' Former Collingwood star and Down All-Star Marty Clarke, who is the head coach at the sessions, said the prospect of Tasmania joining the AFL competition as a 19th team will force clubs to look further afield to find players. 'At the minute, my knowledge of AFL is stronger than it even was when I was a player. I love watching it. I had my time in Australia. If I can help one or two boys or girls to go across, happy days. 'I would love them to experience what I had. I just think clubs are going to have to be smart now with Tasmania coming in, if they do get the licence. They have to find players somewhere else.' Meanwhile, Geelong executive general manager Andrew Mackie hinted that Mayo's Oisín Mullin is set for a contract extension. Speaking to K Rock after their win over Essendon last weekend, Mackie said a deal is close. 'Really confident with where that is. His manager is on holidays; they all go away this time of the year. Ois will be good. He's a great guy to have around the footy club and as we touched on, he is doing a great job for us.' He also hailed the recent showings of Kerry's Mark O'Connor. 'I'd agree with career-best (form). His versatility for us has been key for a number of years.'

Lidl scores again with return of legendary Irish soft drink

A beloved Irish soft drink is set to return to Lidl shelves – just in time to celebrate the Ladies' Gaelic Football season and the upcoming All-Ireland finals. McDaid's Football Special, the iconic beverage from Donegal, is making a highly anticipated comeback to Lidl stores nationwide. Last time it appeared in stores, it sold out rapidly, and now it's back, but you will have to be quick as it's only available for a limited time. LGFA player Carla Rowe. Available from June 26, Football Special will be sold in 1-litre bottles for €1.79, featuring special edition artwork that highlights the achievements of female Gaelic footballers. For the first time ever, it will also be available in 330ml cans priced at €1.19, carrying the drink's traditional label. Kevin Duffy, Chief Commercial Officer at Lidl Ireland, said: 'Football Special is a perfect example of how a local Irish producer can benefit from Lidl's Kickstart programme and achieve real success. It's great to see such a well-loved local drink score new fans right across Ireland and we're expecting another sell-out run when it returns to stores this summer. LGFA layer Carla Rowe with buyer Eoin Slevin (left) and supplier Seamus McDaid (right). 'At Lidl, we're hugely invested in supporting and advancing female sport through our flagship sponsorship with the Ladies' Gaelic Football Association (LGFA). As part of our 'Get Behind the Fight' campaign, we're focused on elevating visibility of female players to fill every seat at every game. 'Our partnership with McDaid's to produce a special edition artwork bottle putting female players in the spotlight is another tangible example of how we can continue to promote LGFA and its players and drive further engagement and support amongst our shoppers and communities across the country. We're thrilled to relist this popular product just as the LGFA season gets into full swing and leading up to thrilling All-Ireland Championship Finals in August.' McDaid's Football Special is produced by a family-run soft drinks company based in Ramelton, Co. Donegal. First created in the 1940s to celebrate the victories of local football club Swilly Rovers, it earned its name from players who would famously 'fill the cup' with the fizzy, non-alcoholic drink in honour of their wins. With its nostalgic taste and loyal following, this limited-edition return is expected to fly off shelves once again, so fans will need to act fast to nab a bottle!
