Stretching its jacked legs on COTA's back straight, my ZR1 reaches 175 mph, then 178 the next lap. 180 mph feels tantalizingly within reach. The 5.5-liter LT7 screams its titanium-hardened lungs out, flexing more turbo horsepower than the F1 cars that fly past and fill these grandstands. This 'Vette grips harder than Schwarzenegger on the campaign trail, and it's not the Terminator you might imagine: It's communicative, (reasonably) accommodating, and daily drivable, still a Corvette at heart.
And it all costs $178,195 to start, including a $3,000 gas-guzzler tax for a ZR1 that can inhale two gallons of premium unleaded per minute at full power. The drinking problem is real, but you can barely buy a 911 GTS for this much cash; the 532-hp Porsche, with precisely half the ZR1's 1,064 horses, starts from $167,000.
While I sneak in 15 memorable bonus laps—I'll never understand auto journos who prefer lunch or 'work' to additional track time—a thought wells up. How is Chevrolet, or any automaker, going to top this? To my sincere surprise, I quickly find out.

That evening, still basking in post-COTA bliss, I'm escorted down a flashily lit hallway, Goodfellas style, to an Austin hotel rooftop for an audience with the 2026 Corvette ZR1X. The coupe and convertible, in the flesh, no camouflage, no rumors.
And no "Zora," badge, either. Sorry. That name, honoring Russian-born Corvette patriarch Zora Arkus-Duntov, was always more media wishful thinking than reality, a familiar game of Corvette Telephone that now proves garbled.
Chevy executives say the "X" signature—while not as romantic and evocative as Z-in-Zora—underscores this as a natural evolution of the ZR1 family, rather than a standalone model. Or, just spitballing here, a standalone, more-desirable, more-collectible model. Wouldn't want to hurt the standard ZR1's feelings, or those of buyers.

Yet speculators and sharp-lensed spy photographers got a lot right, if not the ZR1X's earlier-than-expected arrival, with deliveries set to begin before year-end. This is the range-topping, AWD hybrid Corvette that has haunted the dreams of collectors and the nightmares of seven-figure European rivals.
"America's Hypercar," Chevrolet is calling it. What once would have been eye-rolling GM performance puffery, in the days of Fieros or Solstices, now seems legit. Forget garden-variety 911s that put a chip on the Corvette's shoulder since about, oh, 1963.
The ZR1X directly targets the rare birds typically spotted in Goodwood or Pebble Beach, and then never again outside of YouTube crash videos: The $3.9-million Ferrari F80, a $2.1-million McLaren W1, a $2.7-million Mercedes-AMG One. Sure, it's 'only' a Chevy. But here's the crazy part. Blue-collar badge aside, the X no longer comes across as the performance underdog. Not with a track record of track records for its rear-drive sibling. And not with a gonzo, fully competitive 1,250 hp and roughly 973 pound-feet of torque.
Versus an X-less ZR1, a jump of 186 hp and about 145 lb-ft is entirely due to a Frankenstein jolt from an electrified front axle, an upgraded version of the
Corvette E-Ray's
hybrid system.
The extra oarsmen up front relieve a brutal burden on the ZR1X's rear tires, helping them lay down power and maintain grip, including on optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tires. Especially for standard Pilot Sport 4S rubber, AWD will make the ZR1X more confident in slippery street conditions, which translates to more opportunities for fun without jangling nerves.

Neutral handling and driver confidence were development watchwords. Leveraging the front axle, says Corvette vehicle chief engineer Josh Holder, "is the most approachable way to achieve maximum capability and predictable, repeatable performance."
Keith Badgley, ZR1X lead development engineer, says plotting performance curves shows the lighter ZR1 a touch quicker through the middle of many corners. But for corner entry or exit, it's game over. The four-wheeling freak can use regenerative braking to help slow and balance the car. From there, the ZR1X leaps like a cheetah with a taste for gazelle.
"You'll feel that coming out of every corner, the car clawing you out," Badgley promises. "This thing accelerates like crazy, like nothing you're used to. The two powertrains play together in a harmonious and advantageous way that's beyond what you'd expect from just adding them together."
Naturally, the ZR1X is no slouch in a straight line, despite those electrified parts pushing it past 4,000 pounds, even in base coupe form. The ZR1X can maintain an unholy 1.3 g's of longitudinal acceleration throughout first and second gears, and nearly through third gear. In more familiar terms, that's a wormhole trip from 0-60 mph in less than 2.0 seconds.

Chevy confirmed that on a prepped surface at a Michigan drag strip, along with a quarter-mile in less than 9.0 seconds. Chalk up two more all-time Corvette records. That suggests a Corvette that might (blessedly) out-drag YouTube stars like the Lucid Air Sapphire or Tesla Model S Plaid to 60 mph, then wave goodbye and stretch its lead over those far-heavier EVs. Engineers are still tinkering, looking to unlock even more speed.
And though GM President Mark Reuss hasn't done a 233-mph run in this baby—a stunt that Reuss told me left his spouse anxious and none-too-pleased—the Corvette team is confident in simulations that show the ZR1X matching that terminal velocity. But that's all moot, innit, in a boundaried world where a standard ZR1 runs out of room at COTA at around 180 mph.
Batteries Included

Recall that the E-Ray's oft-quoted 1.1 kilowatt-hour battery, neatly ensconced in the cabin's center tunnel, is only the useable portion of 1.9 kilowatt hours of lithium-ion pouch cells. So, engineers managed to squeeze 26 percent more energy from the same-size battery, which suggests well over 1.3 kWh of usable juice. (Chevy has not cited a total.)
Expanded voltage allowed engineers to push more power into the drive unit, which gains 26 horsepower and 20 pound-feet versus the E-Ray. That single motor was redesigned to handle increased loads, including new bearings.
As on the E-Ray, the hybrid battery is designed for hyper-fast discharge and charge events, versus EV-style propulsive stamina. So there's plenty of buffer to ensure consistent performance and battery life. On the street, it's impossible to deplete the E-Ray's battery to where it can't provide boost—and oh, how I've tried—no matter how hard you drive.
Push a Charge+ button, included on the ZR1X, and the Corvette boosts motor resistance to fully recharge within a few miles of normal driving. As Tadge Juechter, the now-retired Corvette chief engineer told me, the no-hassle hybrid system is designed to convince Corvette refuseniks—of which he admits there are many—that electricity can be their performance friend, and is nothing to fear.
That front axle can contribute power at up to 160 mph before disconnecting, versus 150 mph for the E-Ray. Intelligent strategies, heavy on the algorithms, reserve electricity for when it's truly needed.

"We want to be razor sharp in how we use that finite energy," Badgley says.
To humiliate mere supercars, a "push to pass" function unleashes the full tag team of gasoline and electric thrust. That's accessed via a repurposed steering-wheel cruise-control button. A Qualifying Mode provides maximum jolt up to the front axle's speed limit. An Endurance Mode monitors state-of-charge to sustain all-wheel advantages through a full tank of fuel.
Aside from ZR1X badges on the flanks, steering wheel, and interior waterfall panel, you'll need to squint to spot exterior differences. Or crouch to see the E-Ray's telltale, additional front radiator on the driver's side. Both cars offer the bewinged aero package and carbon-fiber handling aids. Both offer optional carbon-fiber wheels.

To rein in the thrust, the ZR1X does introduce standard carbon-ceramic brakes that are the largest in GM history, including 16.5-inch front rotors clamped by 10-piston calipers. For 2026, that 'J59' brake package will become an option on the ZR1. These bros love to share.
Whatever your preference on rear-drive versus AWD, the ZR1X has one clear edge: The redesigned interior of all 2026 Corvettes, which is more visually appealing and functionally coherent. That includes enlarged screens, a useful 6.6-inch auxiliary driver's screen, and a passenger grab handle that replaces the former try-hard waterfall switches. Tactile HVAC controls migrate below the main display. A smartly redesigned console adds a drive-mode controller that no longer feels like carpal tunnel waiting to happen.
How Much Will It Cost?

Chevrolet isn't ready to talk pricing, so allow me. An E-Ray costs about $37,000 more than a base Stingray. That's a clue, but it may not be apples-to-apples versus the ZR1s.
Chevrolet may see an opportunity to establish the ZR1X as its crowning achievement; "America's hypercar" with a price to match. That said, Corvette fans aren't known as price-no-object types.
Tony Roma, the new executive chief engineer, notes there are no production limits on the ZR1X. If you order one, a process set to begin soon, Chevy will get it in the pipeline. It hopes to build as many as fans demand.
Considering how Chevy loves to sandbag on Corvette pricing, I expect them to impress the world again with the ZR1X's value proposition. The C8's booming sales, including record international sales, have largely defied an industry-wide downturn in sports cars, but they've shown cracks of late. Pricing the ZR1X too high could be self-defeating, limiting even this niche audience.
So with a ZR1 coupe starting around $178,000, or $188,000 for a convertible, I'm going to peg a ZR1X coupe at $210,000 to start, $220,000 for a droptop, and loaded 3LZ convertibles topping $275,000. And if Chevrolet decides to blow people away with a $199,995 starting price, I wouldn't be surprised.
Some old-school Corvette fans will choke on the price. But so will people who pay $1 million or more for highfalutin' hypercars. Even they'll know a (relative) bargain when they see it.

Even the title Chevy bestowed on the ZR1X, "America's Hypercar," suggests the King ZR1 is demoted to mere supercar—the Marquis of Motown, perhaps. But Keith Badgley, the ZR1X's lead development engineer, explains why these cars can comfortably share a throne—without sticking a knife in each other's sales. "Yeah, we like using the term 'America's Hypercar' because that set the standard for what the ZR1X needed to be," Badgley says. The ZR1s, he says, feel fundamentally different on street or track. "The (driven) front axle is so quick, you can get right back onto throttle. We think the ZR1X is going to give greater confidence to the driver." That does sound interesting and helpful, including for owners whose skills might frankly be overwhelmed by four-digit horsepower through rear wheels alone. But at the risk of looking a gift horsepower in the mouth, why now? Chevy will soon begin taking orders for the ZR1X. Why not let the ZR1 enjoy its public acclaim and range-topping status for at least a year before adding a direct competitor for the wealthiest Corvette buyers or collectors? Those prospects now have a decision to make, unless they settle it with one of each. Badgley says these siblings' closely aligned births became nearly inevitable from the moment of conception. The C8 was famously designed from the start to support electrified all-wheel-drive versions, including room for 1.9 kilowatt hours of pouch batteries in its coffin-shaped central tunnel. A ZR1X 'was always part of that plan' that began nearly a decade ago, Badgley affirms. The E-Ray went first, and it provided a technical basis for the hypercar. "We saw the capability of the E-Ray and how we could take advantage of it," Badgeey says. "The design and structure of the ZR1s were always being designed to handle performance at the pinnacle." "That was very rare," Badgley says. "We didn't do that with previous products, and we're not doing it with other products." As Chevrolet developed the Z06's LT6 V-8, the twin-turbocharged Gemini LT7 was also proceeding to serve the ZR1s. That included the 'maniturbo' that combines a turbocharger and exhaust manifold, unique engine castings, pistons, and titanium connecting rods with a jaw-dropping lightness I feel for myself in a garage at Circuit of the Americas during a thrilling ZR1 drive. Rather than parallel and separate development tracks, think of Corvette engineering teams as more like DNA strands, their genetic data informing and cross-pollinating the whole. For one, Chevrolet created a core development team exclusively for all-wheel drive. Using the E-Ray as a test bed, they applied those learnings to push every boundary of the ZR1X—enough to confidently take on seven-figure models like the Ferrari F80 and McLaren W1. "We intentionally kept that core of intelligence together," Badgley says. Photo by: Chevrolet The ZR1X, Badgley says, helped validate key metrics for a ZR1 that went to showrooms first. That includes a shared aero program for design efficiencies and commonalities in manufacturing; The models can share an assembly line in Kentucky, allowing Chevrolet to instantly adjust production based on customer orders. Credit the ZR1X for a shared, optional carbon-fiber wheel whose performance bandwidth was assured by a 'higher-load program' for the heavier AWD car. "Otherwise, we would have had to spend time validating the ZR1 loads and then validating again for the ZR1X," Badgley says. "So even though there's a ZR1 team and a ZR1X team, we're dealing with the same problems, helping each other to solve them and make these two great cars come together." The ZR1 upsized the Z06's brakes, but deceleration requirements for the more-powerful ZR1X demanded a clean-sheet solution. The largest brakes in GM history feature 10-piston front calipers, ridiculous 16.5-inch rotors front and rear, and new continuously woven carbon-fiber brake discs. During ZR1X development at the Nürburgring, engineers clocked a stunning 1.9 g's of deceleration at the Tiergarten corner, a wicked-technical right-hand sweeper near a lap's end that saw test drivers shed speed from 180 to 120 mph. Photo by: Chevrolet Badgley says the 'Vette's most-resilient brake discs in history survived 2,500 miles of brutal track testing—on four cars, more than 600 miles per car—without a brake change. The ZR1X will bequeath that standard "J59" brake package to the ZR1, which adopts it as an option for 2026. ZR1X trickle-down will even benefit the entire family. Every 2026 Corvette gets the new PTM Pro traction manager, designed with ZR1X in mind. For daring types, it offers easy screen access to turn off traction and stability control, while maintaining launch control functions. For the ZR1X, PTM Pro also keeps brake-based torque vectoring active, actively managing inside-front braking for maximum traction while exiting corners. The ZR1X is on schedule to arrive by Christmas, ideally wrapped in a Corvette-red bow for good boys and girls. Badgley says the teams are still tinkering, trying to unlock more speed. That includes a quarter-mile that the ZR1X dispatched in less than 9 seconds just a few weeks ago, on a prepped surface at US 131 Motorsports Park in Michigan. Corvette fans may argue about the line of succession. But in a straight line at least, the all-wheel-drive ZR1X will wear the undisputed Corvette crown. 2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road: The Good and the Bad
The Toyota 4Runner has developed a reputation for its unwavering ruggedness and off-road abilities. Though I worried Toyota might sand down the truck-based SUV's sharp edges to make it friendlier for on-road excursions, thankfully, that's not the case. The 2025 4Runner is the best version of the model yet, bolstered by a much-needed hybrid powertrain and a lovely cabin. It's nicer to drive on the road, sure, but it's also just as impressive once you hit the trails. Toyota rightfully addressed this, adding a turbocharged inline-four making 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque as standard, paired to a quick-shifting eight-speed transmission. Toyota's i-Force Max powertrain takes the 4Runner one step further, adding an electric motor between the engine and gearbox, supplemented by a battery in the trunk floor. Total output here is a healthy 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. Those numbers mean brisk acceleration and passing power, and a far smoother driving experience overall. Despite changes underneath the hood and the new looks, the 4Runner still uses an old-fashioned body-on-frame chassis, shared with the Tacoma pickup. That means it's still plenty capable off-road. There's a two-speed transfer case for low-speed rock crawling, and even a locking rear differential in case you get really stuck. That equipment proved useful when we took the 4Runner to an off-road park, where it shrugged off every obstacle we threw at it. While the cabin isn't exactly premium, there are lots of easy-to-use, physical controls, and a thoroughly modern infotainment system running the 14-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument display. Our tester even had a wireless charging pad. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, of course. The Bad Photo by: Brian Silvestro / Motor1 Unsophisticated Ride The Infotainment Screen Is Almost Too Big Kind of Expensive The 4Runner's body-on-frame chassis is great for towing, off-roading, and bashing over broken pavement. But it can also be a bit flinty at times. Giving up ultimate comfort is the compromise you'll have to make for this level of capability. Personally, I don't mind the truckish ride—it's charming, and a constant reminder you can drop what you're doing and go absolutely anywhere, if you desire. Don't get me wrong, I love a nice, crisp infotainment touchscreen. But the optional 14.0-inch unit might be too big. It absolutely dominates the top of the dash, cutting slightly into my sightlines out the windshield. It's bright and overbearing, to the point where I'd recommend that buyers avoid it—especially because you can't watch videos on it. Choosing the hybrid powertrain is a must if you want to enjoy this new 4Runner to the fullest, but be prepared to pay up. While the ICE-only TRD Off-Road starts at $50,640, the cheapest battery-assisted model, the TRD Off-Road you see here, starts at $53,440. If you don't plan to off-road often, you can get a gas-only 4Runner for as cheaply as $42,220. We were also fans of its composed ride, and despite steering tuned more for comfort than aggression, it still felt plenty connected. The Macan 4 Electric is a solid electrified SUV to be sure, just not an overly exciting one from behind the wheel. Macan Electric Does EV Things Well As an EV, the Macan 4 more than hits the mark. Its 95-kWh of usable battery delivered 282 miles of range during our 70-mph steady-state Road-Trip Range test—just shy of its 308-mile EPA rating—and it aced the fast-charging trial, adding 175 miles in just 15 minutes on a 350-kW charger. In addition, charging from 5 to 80 percent took only 22 minutes, just behind its Audi Q6 E-Tron platform mate. Those are strong numbers, and they should matter to anyone buying an EV. On top of that, the native navigation system has been improved to make road-trip planning smarter, showing available chargers along your route and estimating charging times based on charger power and your battery's current state of charge. Like the Taycan, the Macan Electric doesn't offer true one-pedal driving, though it does take advantage of brake regeneration to recover energy. When examining the inside of the 2025 Porsche Macan 4 Electric, we came away satisfied with what we saw and touched, though it lacked the wow factor some other EVs in its class deliver. On the plus side, the leather throughout the cabin is soft. The seats feel comfortable and well cushioned—thankfully so because those 14-way power-adjustable seats tack on a $1,350 premium. The 10.9-inch touchscreen fits neatly into the dashboard and delivers crisp, clear navigation visuals via Apple CarPlay. Meanwhile, the 12.6-inch curved gauge cluster adds a touch of high-end sophistication to the cockpit. But take a closer look, and you might find yourself underwhelmed. The hard plastic on the center console feels out of place in a vehicle at this price point. We noticed the entire panel housing the A/C controls sinks noticeably when you press one of the touch-sensitive buttons. Plus, there's more piano black trim than we'd prefer. Overall, the cabin proved to be less refined than we expected. We also ran into a few hiccups with the infotainment system. On our first time in the car, connecting to Apple CarPlay was a breeze, but strangely, no audio played. We tried switching to the radio but came up empty there, too. Thankfully, the issue only popped up once during our two-week loan, but it wasn't the best way to kick things off. There were a few other features that stood out in a positive way. For example, the ambient lighting isn't just for looks. It flashes bright yellow or red on the upper door panel to warn you of cars in your blind spot or when a car is approaching, respectively. At night, this lighting adds a sleek, modern vibe to the cabin. Still, there's nothing that felt particularly unique or groundbreaking, and given it's a Porsche, we expected something a bit more upscale and special. Is the 2025 Porsche Macan 4 Electric Worth It? After two weeks behind the wheel of the 2025 Porsche Macan 4 Electric, we concluded it's a great EV—but it doesn't quite deliver what other Porsches do. As we mentioned, the interior materials could be of higher quality, and the driving experience lacks a certain flair. Another sticking point is value. The Macan 4 Electric starts at $80,795, and prices climb quickly once you start adding options. With extras such as rear steering and the Sport Chrono package, the final tally hit $90,365—a hefty sum for what you get. But more than that, what's missing from the Macan 4 Electric is that intangible something —the special feeling that defines a Porsche, especially one powered by an internal combustion engine. Take the Macan powered by the 261-hp 2.0-liter turbo, for instance. That isn't the fastest Macan, either, but it feels like a Porsche. There's a certain character to it: the sound, the surge, the connection to the road. It's the DNA we expect to be baked into every model bearing the rearing horse crest, electrified or otherwise—an experience that the otherwise competent Macan 4 didn't quite deliver.
