Car crash claims three, forces temporary N2 closure at Amatikulu

The Citizen28-06-2025
A major crash between a car and tanker on the N2 near the Amatikulu River claimed the lives of three women this morning.
Two men were also injured in the accident, while the highway was closed in both directions to allow for safe clean-up of the tanker, which was carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
The accident happened at around 11am, killing three women aged 15 to 65 and leaving one man trapped.
Members of IPSS Search and Rescue and the Mandeni Fire Department were able to free the man and take him to hospital, alongside another man who was not as seriously injured.
Teams worked under immense pressure once they discovered the tanker's cargo.
'The area was immediately declared unsafe due to the risk posed by the LPG tanker,' said IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Samantha Meyrick.
'Only essential personnel remained at the scene, and the N2 was closed.'
The highway has remained closed since, with 6.45pm this evening (June 28) being reported as the latest estimate for reopening.
Northbound traffic is being diverted at the Mandeni offramp and southbound traffic at Dokodweni.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and make use of alternative routes.

Helen Zille brags about taking a taxi: 'I'll be using them often'

Former Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille has opened up about her positive experience taking a taxi. This comes days after an e-hailing Uber driver was shot and burned alive by angry taxi drivers at Maponya Mall in Johannesburg. On her X account, Helen Zille shared her experience of taking a metered taxi home from the Cape Town International Airport. She posted: 'With our children out of town, we decided to take a taxi home. We went to the authorised airport taxi desk and found friendly, helpful, and quick service. 'They immediately accompanied us, helping with our luggage, to a nearby waiting car . And off we went, with no hassle and a professional, friendly driver. Helen added, 'I'll be using them more often. A good, affordable alternative to more expensive options'. Helen Zille has no qualms about taking a taxi or driving a car that is seemingly socially unacceptable for her status. The former DA leader – who now chairs the party's Federal Council – drives a Toyota Yaris. In March, the 74-year-old revealed that she would be finally upgrading her trusted Corsa of 25 years to another affordable option. In the comments section, Helen Zille was asked what car she would be driving next. 'A Toyota Yaris,' she responded. According to Toyota, the Yaris debuted in South Africa in 2005 and quickly became one of its best-selling models globally. In recent years, 'slow sales' have seen the popular car being discontinued in countries around the world. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
