Sydney Sweeney and the Super Bowl 'controversial celebration' rumour: What's really going on?

Time of India2 days ago
Love her or roll your eyes at her, one thing's for certain, Sydney
Sweeney
knows how to stay in the headlines. After that American Eagle jeans advert that bizarrely spiralled into a row about 'eugenics marketing', the Euphoria star has once again found herself at the centre of an internet storm. This time, it's all thanks to a viral claim that she promised to go naked if the
Buffalo Bills
win the Super Bowl.
A supposed statement attributed to Sweeney reads: 'Let's be honest, a Super Bowl win would be the ultimate reason to celebrate. If they win, you'll definitely see me naked in full Bills glory, because this is my team, and I'll do whatever it takes to show my love.'
Sounds wild, doesn't it? Well, it turns out the whole thing is cooked up. The quote originated on a fan page called Mafia Bill, before spreading to another account called Buffalo Bills Fans Club earlier this month. But here's the catch: there's zero evidence that Sweeney ever said this.
Interestingly, Bills fans weren't the only ones roped into this cheeky rumour. Around the same time the Buffalo post appeared, two other fan pages, We Love Chicago Bears and We Love Cleveland Browns, posted the exact same claim, simply swapping in their own team names. In short, it's not Sweeney showing sudden NFL loyalty, it's just copy-paste internet mischief.
Sweeney's popularity, combined with the internet's appetite for outrageous celebrity headlines, made the rumour believable enough to go viral. But there's no official comment from the actor herself, and no reliable outlet has ever linked her to the so-called 'naked celebration' pledge.
Live Events
Away from the gossip mill, Sweeney has been busy with work, although not all of it has gone to plan. Her latest film Americana has stumbled badly at the box office. Next, however, fans will see her take on a completely different role in Christy, a biopic of boxer Christy Martin. The film is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 5 September 2025.

Sydney Sweeney defends controversial bathwater soap by comparing herself to Jacob Elordi: ‘It was mainly the girls…'

Before stirring the hornet's nest with her ad for American Eagle jeans, Sydney Sweeney faced backlash online for another advertising campaign which was for a bath products company, which started selling a limited-edition soap that contained her actual bathwater. Now, the actor has responded to the controversy, making it clear that she has no regrets. Sydney Sweeney has defended the limited-edition line of bar soaps made from her bathwater.(Instagram) Sydney Sweeney reacts to the backlash In June, the Anyone But You star faced backlash for her partnership with Dr. Squatch. At the time, Sweeney released a limited-edition line of bar soaps made from her bathwater. The product, officially called Sydney's Bathwater Bliss, sold out in seconds. The Emmy-nominated actor opened up about the backlash she received for her bathwater-scented soap with Dr. Squatch in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. She defended her decision by comparing herself to her Euphoria co-star Jacob Elordi. 'I think it's important to have a finger on the pulse of what people are saying, because everything is a conversation with the audience,' said Sweeney about navigating internet feedback. The limited edition soap, Bathwater Bliss, was marketed to men, but Sweeney noted that it was women who ended up having the most to say about it. 'It was mainly the girls making comments about it, which I thought was really interesting… They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi's bathwater,' Sweeney said. Sweeney was referring to the candle that was branded Jacob Elordi's Bathwater, which was released in January 2024 amid the social media attention around Saltburn, which starred her Euphoria co-star. In the film, directed by Emerald Fennell, Barry Keoghan's character becomes obsessed with Elordi and drinks the bathwater of Elordi's character Felix. More about the backlash Sweeney, who had teamed up with the men's hygiene brand in 2024 for a body wash commercial, followed up the collaboration in May with Sydney's Bathwater Bliss. "When your fans start asking for your bathwater, you can either ignore it or turn it into a bar of Dr. Squatch soap. It's weird in the best way, and I love that we created something that's not just unforgettable, it actually smells incredible,' Sweeney said in a press release at the time. The soap's marketing theme received mixed reactions on social media, with some social media users dubbing it a "gimmick" and some questioning the item's cleanliness. Sweeney's bathwater soap isn't the only ad campaign of hers that's raised eyebrows. In July, she became the face of denim brand American Eagle's newest campaign, which featured wordplay praising Sweeney's 'great jeans.'

Sydney Sweeney says girls who loved Jacob Elordi's bathwater slammed her racy side hustle; hints Euphoria co-star's Saltburn scene inspired her soap

Sydney Sweeney has found herself in not one, but two controversies in recent months. Before the Euphoria star grabbed headlines with her American Eagle ad that drew heavy backlash, she was already at the centre of heated conversation over her racy side hustle. Earlier this year, Sweeney partnered with men's grooming brand Dr. Squatch to launch a limited-edition soap made with her own bathwater. Branded Sydney's Bathwater Bliss, the bar drew criticism but still sold out in seconds. Now, in a new interview with The Wall Street Journal, Sweeney opened up about the frenzy and how closely she tracks the public's reaction to her work. Also read: Can't we say 'good genes' anymore? The backlash to the Sydney Sweeney jeans ad explained Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, her first interview in months, Sweeney explained that fans had been jokingly asking her for her bathwater online, and instead of ignoring it, she thought it would be interesting to turn it into an actual product. 'I's important to have a finger on the pulse of what people are saying, because everything is a conversation with the audience.' She described it as 'weird in the best way' and said the soap not only turned heads but also worked just like other Dr. Squatch products. Watch In the same interview, Sweeney hinted that her bathwater soap was sparked by Jacob Elordi's viral Saltburn moment. In the 2023 film, there's a popular scene where Barry Keoghan's character drinks Elordi's bathwater, a moment that blew up online, sparked countless memes, and even inspired a candle called Jacob Elordi's Bathwater that fans couldn't get enough of. Sweeney saw the frenzy and the idea, but when she put out her own version in soap form, the backlash was instant, especially from women who flooded her comments with criticism. Speaking to the outlet, Sweeney said, 'It was mainly the girls making comments about it, which I thought was really interesting. They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi's bathwater.' The soap was made with ingredients like sand and pine bark extract, mixing it with her bathwater. Only 5,000 bars were made, priced at $8 each. Some fans found it hilarious and harmless, joking that 'at least it might make men shower,' while others felt it was too much. But that wasn't the only campaign of hers that rubbed people the wrong way. This summer, she was featured in a major American Eagle ad built around the line 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.' The slogan played on the words 'genes' and 'jeans,' but it didn't land well. Critics accused the campaign of glorifying her white traits, blue eyes, and slim frame as the beauty ideal, with some even tying the tagline to old eugenics language. A few went so far as to brand it 'Nazi propaganda.' American Eagle defended the ads, insisting the message was strictly about the denim, but the backlash blew up online and even drew comment from Trump's camp, where communications manager Steven Cheung slammed it as 'cancel culture run amok,' and Trump himself supported her. When asked about the controversy in a recent interview, Sweeney dodged the question.
