The pride of Grande Prairie, Tenille Townes has been a going concern since moving to Nashville 12 years ago, where she played sets at the iconic Bluebird Cafe and began participating in writing sessions with Music City songsmiths. She was only 17 when she received her first Canadian Country Music Award for Female Arts of the Year and has been accumulating awards, nominations and acclaim ever since. Her most recent single is Backfire, the catchy mid-tempo duet with fellow Canuck Nate Haller.

What to see: Devin Cuddy at the Ironwood Stage and Grill.
Article content
The Ironwood doesn't need to alter its programming all that much during the Calgary Stampede since it's already a hotspot for roots music. But if your tastes lay a little more left-of-the-dial when it comes to country music, second-generation singer-songwriter Devin Cuddy is a safe bet. The son of Blue Rodeo co-leader Jim Cuddy, Devin has inherited his dad's expressive vocals and songwriting chops and adds his own dash of soul and R&B to the proceedings.

Thirteen-year-old Airdrie singer-songwriter Hayley Isabel to play Country Thunder

Article content Hayley Isabel was only 11 years old when she went to her first Country Music Alberta Awards, but she had already mastered the fine art of networking. Article content She had seen Kyle McKearney perform and had zeroed in on the veteran award-winning, alt-country singer-songwriter as someone she would like to collaborate with. So whenever they would meet, she would remind him of that. Article content Article content Article content 'Whenever I saw Kyle around, I would give him my little business card that I had,' says Hayley. 'I think I gave him my business card like five times. Eventually, he reached out to me on Instagram and asked me all of these really random questions about my music career, like how serious I am about it, where I want to go with it and why I love country music and all these questions. A month later, he asked me to open for him at the Ironwood. He was doing a record release for his album A Traveler's Lament, which was a huge deal for me. At the time, I was 11 and I was not ready to open for Kyle McKearney, but that really pushed me to work really hard so I could put on the best show. ' Article content Article content Now 13, Hayley has not slowed down. McKearney has collaborated with her on her sophomore single Fly High. At the time of this interview, the two were set to enter OCL Studios within a few days to record Hayley's newest single, Tag. Article content Article content In the meantime, she has graduated from Airdrie markets and open-mic nights hosted by her guitar teacher to playing gigs at the Strathmore and Calgary Stampedes and on the Big Valley Jamboree Horizon Stage. She also won the 2024 and 2025 Alberta Country Music Youth Horizon Award. Alberta Music gamely called her a 'pint-sized powerhouse' on its website. Her most recent single, Colour Changing, is an endearingly melodic coming-of-age tale co-written with Sonia Deleo. Article content On Friday, she will be opening the Country 105 Stage at Country Thunder backed by a five-piece band. This opportunity arose from another round of networking, although this time it required a little less effort on her part. While at the Country Music Alberta Awards in March in Calgary, she was approached by a booker from Country Thunder and asked if she wanted to play. Article content Hayley officially began performing on her 10th birthday when she played an open-mic night in Airdrie hosted by her future guitar teacher Steve Jevne, who will be playing lead guitar for her at Country Thunder. She played some originals, plus covers of The Band Perry's If I Die Young and Vance Joy's Riptide. Before that, she had taken piano lessons at the age of six. After learning Mary Had a Little Lamb, she brought her piano teacher a Taylor Swift book — Hayley cites Swift, Lainey Wilson and Jackson Dean as inspiration these days — and by the age of eight had switched her attention to guitar. She began listening to acts such as Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood and has recently discovered 1990s rock. Article content She started booking gigs at markets and festivals. She sang the national anthem at the Calgary Stampede every day, and also played the Window on the West Stage. Article content Article content As for future plans, Hayley says she hasn't decided whether her singles are leading to a full-length album or EP in the near future. Article content 'One day, an album sounds really cool,' she says. 'The music industry is a little bit different, with singles being released a little more often than albums. There are a lot of really successful artists who release singles, so I'm not really sure what plans for that will be right now.'

Country singer Dallas Smith winks at Trump's annexation threats with 51-date tour

Country singer Dallas Smith isn't looking to stir the political pot, but he admits it's no coincidence that his upcoming Canadian concert tour is booked for 51 dates. In a wink to U.S. President Donald Trump's threats of making Canada the 51st state, the British Columbia-born country singer and frontman of rock band Default says he's investing in his homeland with an acoustic tour that rolls through 51 communities starting this fall. We were close to that number and then we said let's just make that happen, he said with a laugh in a recent interview. It was important for me to come, especially at this time, [with] a lot of Canadian pride. I want to get out there, really go hard, and visit all these places that I haven't been and see the country. The Dallas Smith & His Band (Unplugged) tour will focus on places he's never toured before and is mostly booked in small theatre venues of several hundred to a thousand seats. Photo: The Canadian Press / Jeff McIntosh He starts in Fort St. John, B.C., on Oct. 3 and continues to less-travelled communities such as Kitimat, B.C., Enoch, M.B. and Wingham, Ont. By the time it's over, Smith will have wound through nine of the 10 provinces — skipping Newfoundland and Labrador and the territories — reaching his final stop in Belleville, Ont., on Dec. 14. Sporting a red-brimmed maple leaf baseball cap emblazoned with Canada, Smith explained the reasons behind making Canada his main focus for the rest of the year. There is a lot going on in the U.S. that goes against my upbringing and what I think is right, he said in a video chat from Nashville, where he was meeting with his management. So why not double down and spend the time in a place that I really want to enjoy and be around my people? 'Nooks and crannies' of Canada Few Canadian musicians take on the challenge of playing so many small markets. Life on the road can be mighty expensive once accounting for all the people required to carry a tour. With his band Default, Smith is more familiar with big venues, music festivals and major events, such as the Calgary Stampede, where he's roared through hits like Wasting My Time and Deny . LISTEN | Smith talks about switching to country (new window) He intends to revisit some of those older songs on this tour with stripped-back versions, while sharing stories of his upbringing, music career and newer solo tracks, including How Do You Miss Me and Drop . The concept is inspired by the MTV Unplugged sessions of the 1990s made famous by Nirvana and Alice In Chains. Smith said he's been throwing around the idea of exploring the nooks and crannies of Canada since before the COVID-19 pandemic, but the plan never took shape. More recently, alongside his management team, he mapped out a budget to make it happen, shedding the lavish perks and complex lighting rigs for something more modest — a single bus, trailer, full band and most of his regular crew. Together they'll work on a tight schedule that, at times, sees them booked for six consecutive nights in six different cities before they have a break. To make it happen, their stage setup will be minimal. We're gonna dial back and allow the beauty of these venues to kind of lead the way and be the backdrop, he added. Smith's approach might seem counter to the music industry trend of making shows bigger and more social media friendly — think towering digital screens and gimmicky celebrity appearances. But he said he's often rejected those pressures, and with this tour, he focused on making tickets affordable, within the $60 to $100 range, without impacting the live performance. I did not want to sacrifice how these songs would be played, Smith said. I love the guys in my band; they're like brothers to me. Playing these songs together, and paying them a full wage where they feel valued ... and balancing that with ticket price, it's a little tricky, but we landed in a good spot where everybody feels really happy.
