On Friday morning, one parent, who identified himself as Antoine, was dropping off his daughter in third grade at the school's primary section. "We tried to find the right words to tell her about the girl's death yesterday," said the 44-year-old IT manager. But he said he needed more time before he could talk about the tragedy with his older daughter, a pupil at the high school. "It's not a bad thing that the youngest ones are back at school today because they can ask the teaching staff questions if they need to," he added. But another parent, Olivia, 37, said she felt anxious about her child being back in the classroom. "I admit that I found it difficult to drop my son off at school this morning," said the nursing assistant and mother of four. "Normally, school is a place where nothing can happen," she added.
The knife attack is the latest in a series that has shocked France. Prime Minister Francois Bayrou called for a response to the "endemic violence" among some youths and demanded proposals to prevent further violence. "These weapons must be banned," said Bayrou, raising the possibility of metal detectors as "one option". The suspect sent a long email to fellow pupils before the attack, in which he said: "Globalisation has transformed our system into a machine to decompose humanity." President Emmanuel Macron on X hailed the courage of the teachers who intervened and "likely prevented other tragedies". — AFP

Iraq starts work on IS mass grave
BAGHDAD: Iraqi authorities have begun excavating the site of a mass grave believed to contain thousands of victims of the IS group near Mosul city, the project's director said on Sunday. The first phase, which was launched on August 10, includes surface-level excavation at the Khasfa site, director Ahmed al Assadi said. A correspondent visiting the site in northern Iraq said the team unearthed human skulls buried in the sand. Senior Chinese diplomat taken in for questioning
BEIJING: A senior Chinese diplomat considered a contender for future foreign minister has been detained by authorities for questioning, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday. Liu Jianchao, head of a department under the ruling Communist Party that oversees relations with foreign political parties, was "taken away" after returning to Beijing from a work trip abroad in late July, according to people familiar with the matter, the report said. The reason for his detention could not be determined, it added. Liu, 61, has previously served in key diplomatic roles including ambassadorships to the Philippines and Indonesia and foreign ministry spokesperson. He has also led various national and regional bodies tasked with implementing President Xi Jinping's signature crackdown on corruption. His detention represents the highest-level inquiry into a Chinese diplomat since Qin Gang, who was removed as foreign minister in 2023 following reports of an extramarital affair. Blast near border in Lebanon kills six soldiers
BEIRUT: Lebanon's army said a blast at a weapons depot near the Israeli border on Saturday killed six soldiers as a military source said troops were removing munitions from a facility. Under a truce that ended a recent war between Israel and Lebanese group Hezbollah, the army has been deploying in south Lebanon and dismantling the militant group's infrastructure there. An army statement gave a preliminary toll of six soldiers killed and others wounded "while an army unit was inspecting a weapons depot and dismantling its contents in Wadi Zibqin", in the Tyre district near the Israeli border. Investigations were underway to determine the cause of the blast, it added. President Joseph Aoun said he was informed by army commander Rodolphe Haykal of the "painful incident" that led to troop casualties. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam paid tribute on X to the troops who were killed "while performing their national duty", calling the army the protector of Lebanon's "unity and its legitimate institutions". — AFP
