TNGASA lookalike website clickbaits students applying to govt arts colleges
If you type 'TNGASA' on search engines, two domains will appear, the official one with '.in' extension and a lookalike with '.com' extension. The Directorate of Collegiate Education's (DCE) lethargy to purchase domains with other extensions is blamed as the reason behind the confusion. Students applying for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions also face a similar plight, with sources from DCE admitting that someone also purchased the '.in' domain, which will appear in the second spot on search engines. Officers who manage the portal did not purchase any domains except '.org', they added.
P Deepak, a student in Coimbatore, told TNIE, 'Recently, I searched for the TNGASA website to apply for a postgraduate course. On it, two websites with the same name, TNGASA, appeared. When I hurriedly clicked on the second website, which had a '.com' domain, except for the admission process, there were details of all arts and science colleges with advertisements offered by Google.'
An assistant professor at a government college in Salem said several students who completed Class 12 faced the same trouble. A web developer, P Naveen from Coimbatore, said that the DCE should have purchased other domains such as '.com', '.net' and '.org.
'Since the department failed to do this, someone could have purchased the '.com' extension and then launched and operated a website with the same name. Practically, it is legal. The fault rests with the department, which neglected to acquire the domains priced under Rs 5,000 annually,' he said.
Government departments should form new websites with a '.gov' name, which would prevent private entities from misusing such websites, he added.
'When a second website appears with the same name, a large number of students will definitely visit the same website organically. Through this, the owner of the website can earn more money using Google AdSense,' he explained.

Clicked Link To Order Milk, Lost Rs 18.5 Lakh: Mumbai Woman Duped In Cyber Fraud
Investigators believe the fraudster gained remote access to the woman's phone once she clicked on the malicious link A 71-year-old woman in Mumbai was allegedly duped of Rs 18.5 lakh from her bank accounts while trying to place an online order for a litre of milk, police said on Saturday. The woman, a resident of Wadala, reportedly lost her entire savings within two days earlier this month after falling victim to an online fraud, an officer said. According to the complaint, on August 4, she received a call from a man who introduced himself as 'Deepak," claiming to be an executive of a milk company. He sent her a link on her phone and instructed her to fill in her details to complete the order. 'She was asked to click on the link while staying on the call and follow instructions. The call lasted for over an hour before she hung up," the official said. The following day, the same caller allegedly contacted her again and extracted additional information. Days later, during a visit to her bank, the woman discovered that Rs 1.7 lakh had been withdrawn from one of her accounts. On checking her other two accounts, she found they too had been wiped out. In total, Rs 18.5 lakh was siphoned off. Investigators believe the fraudster gained remote access to the woman's phone once she clicked on the malicious link. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway, the police said. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ED raids Tamil Nadu Minister I Periyasamy, son in money laundering case
The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday searched multiple premises linked to Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader I Periyasamy and his MLA son as part of a money laundering investigation, official sources said. The raids were undertaken in Chennai and Dindigul under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The premises of I P Sentilkumar, the son of the 72-year-old minister for rural development, panchayats and panchayat unions, were also searched, according to the sources. Periyasamy represents the Athoor assembly constituency in Dindigul district. There was no immediate comment from Periyasamy or the DMK on the ED action. The money laundering investigation stems from an April order of the Madras High Court, which directed a special court in Dindigul to frame charges against Periyasamy and his family members in connection with a Rs 2.1 crore "disproportionate" assets case. The order came in response to some criminal revision petitions filed by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), challenging a special court order discharging Periyasamy and his family members from the case. The HC also directed the special court to conduct the trial on a day-to-day basis and complete it within six months. The prosecution's case was that Periyasamy had amassed wealth to the tune of Rs 2.1 crore in his name and in the names of his wife, P Suseela and sons P Sentilkumar and P Prabhu, disproportionate to his known sources of income when he was a minister between 2006 and 2010.
