BEIJING : China's exports jumped in June, official data showed today, beating forecasts in a month when Washington and Beijing agreed a tentative deal to lower swingeing tariffs on each other.
Data from the General Administration of Customs said exports rose 5.8% year-on-year, topping the 5% forecast in a Bloomberg survey of economists.
Imports rose 1.1% – beating the predicted 0.3% gain.
China's exports reached record highs last year – a lifeline to its slowing economy as pressures elsewhere mounted.
Beijing has struggled to sustain growth since the pandemic as it battles a prolonged debt crisis in the property sector, chronically low consumption and high youth unemployment.
A bruising trade war with the US, driven by President Donald Trump's policy of sweeping import tariffs, has made things more difficult for the world's second-largest economy.
Washington and Beijing have de-escalated their trade spat after reaching a framework for a deal at talks in London last month, but observers warn of lingering uncertainty.
Customs official Wang Lingjun said at a news conference today that Beijing '(hopes) that the US will continue to work together with China towards the same direction', state broadcaster CCTV reported.
'The tariff truce was 'hard won',' Wang said.
'There is no way out through blackmail and coercion. Dialogue and cooperation are the right path,' he added.

Palm rises on short-covering, firmer palm olein, Chicago soyoil

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian palm oil futures rose on Wednesday, extending gains from the previous session, as short-covering by traders and strength in Dalian palm olein and Chicago soyoil lent support. The benchmark palm oil contract for October delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained RM66, or 1.55 per cent, to RM4,330 (US$1,025.09) a metric ton at the midday break. Strength in Dalian palm olein and Chicago soyoil markets spilled over into crude palm oil futures during the session, a Kuala Lumpur-based trader said. "Dalian's rally was driven by both short-covering and technical buying." Benchmark crude palm oil futures hit a midday high of RM4,334, with short-covering likely emerging after prices broke above the RM4,300-level, the trader added. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract added 0.3 per cent, while its palm oil contract rose 1.59 per cent. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade gained 0.79 per cent. Palm oil tracks the price movements of rival edible oils as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. Oil prices climbed in Asian trade after falling for three consecutive sessions as a US trade deal with Japan signalled progress on tariffs, though gains were capped by fading hopes for a breakthrough at an EU-China summit. Stronger crude oil futures make palm a more attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. The ringgit, palm's currency of trade, strengthened 0.12 per cent against the dollar, making the commodity slightly more expensive for buyers holding foreign currencies. European Union soybean imports for the 2025-26 season that began on July 1 reached 519,609 million metric tons by July 20, down 32 per cent year-on-year. Palm oil imports fell 53 per cent year-on-year to 93,234 million tons, according to data published by the European Commission. Palm oil may retest support at RM4,198 per metric ton, a break below could open the way toward RM4,150, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.

Most Malaysians unaffected by new electricity tariff, says Fadillah

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — The implementation of the new electricity tariff structure will not affect 85 per cent of Malaysians, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof told the Dewan Rakyat today. Fadillah, who is also minister of energy transition and water transformation, explained that while 15 per cent of users might see adjustments, the majority of Malaysians will remain protected through ongoing government support. 'That 85 per cent includes domestic users who benefit from rebates, as well as micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) eligible for specific assistance,' Fadillah said in response to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN–Kota Bharu). 'The current focus is on promoting energy efficiency and encouraging users to adopt cleaner, more cost-effective practices.' Fadillah also explained that as a public-listed company, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has a duty to generate profits for its investors, which include public institutions such as the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB). A portion of these profits will also be reinvested to upgrade the national electricity grid to accommodate the growing integration of renewable energy sources, he said.

Auditor-General's Report: Azalina tables motion to extend debate on RM48.9b audit findings for stronger oversight

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said tabled a motion in the Dewan Rakyat today to extend the debate on the Auditor-General's Report (LKAN) to facilitate institutional checks and balances. She said the move is part of ongoing reforms to enhance the efficiency, transparency, and effectiveness of public entities, and reinforce the government's push for stronger public sector governance and supporting the oversight of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). 'In line with the principles of transparency and accountability, the Madani Government has taken a significant step by not only tabling the LKAN in this Honourable House but also allowing it to be openly debated. 'This is a departure from previous administrations that only tabled the report without debate,' she said while tabling the LKAN 2/2025 motion in the Dewan Rakyat today, adding that since June 6, 2023, the report has been debated four times. She said the report, which covers the activities of ministries, departments, statutory bodies and federal government-linked companies, presents audit findings on five programmes, activities, or projects across seven ministries, with a total audited value of RM48.873 billion. Azalina said LKAN 2/2025 highlighted serious irregularities in three of the five audited programmes, potentially undermining their efficiency and intended impact. 'To address these shortcomings and prevent recurrence, the report sets out 22 recommendations for the relevant ministries, departments, agencies and federal government-linked companies to act upon. 'This initiative creates a direct avenue for more members of parliament to play an active role in ensuring government funds are managed prudently in the public interest,' she said. She added that the debate is also intended to provide a platform for discussing concrete steps to address the issues raised, ensuring they are given due attention before effective corrective action is taken. Azalina further noted that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed the need for all responsible ministers to thoroughly review every finding raised in LKAN 2/2025, especially recurrent issues that remain unresolved. — Bernama
