Farage's Reform UK reached a 'tipping point' - and it's worrying news for Labour
Reform UK have reached a 'tipping point' where Britain's electoral system works for them rather than holding them back.
Nigel Farage's party has long opposed the First Past the Post (FPTP) voting system which holds back challenger parties.
But analysis of the local election results by the Electoral Reform Society (ERS) shows Reform getting an almost 10-percentage point 'winner's bonus' in their haul of council seats last Thursday compared to their vote share.
Across 22 of the 23 councils contested last Thursday, Reform won just under 31% of the vote but garnered just over 40% of the seats, leading to a 'winner's bonus' of 9.8 points.
In the 2013 local elections - when Ukip got its strongest vote - the party got just 5% of the council seats available, despite winning 20% of the vote.
The ERS analysis shows that just a 12.2-point increase in Reform's vote share in 2025 compared to UKIP's in 2013 has resulted in a huge 35.5-point increase in council seat share.
Darren Hughes, Chief Executive of the Electoral Reform Society, said: "It is clear from these results that UK elections are turning into a random lottery to see which party will get the 'winner's bonus' under First Past the Post. "
But in worrying news for Labour, Keir Starmer's party suffered the greatest electoral penalty from the FPTP system at the local elections, seeing a difference of -8.2 points, with its 14% vote share yielding just 5% of council seats.
Labour benefited from the system hugely in last year's general election, turning a slim lead in votes to a huge commons majority.
The FPTP system saw Labour win a landslide 63% of the seats in Westminster on just 34% of the vote [2], leading to the most disproportional parliament in British history.
Mr Hughes added: "At these local elections we again saw that people are voting in an increasingly multi-party way and our two-party voting system is simply unable to cope.
"That is why it is throwing out distorted results that don't represent the way people voted with parties winning majorities on councils on just over a quarter of the vote.
"This just underlines the need to move to a fairer, proportional electoral system for town halls, as well as Westminster, that accurately reflects the way people vote in the seats parties receive.
"Rather than gifting different parties massive electoral bonuses that don't represent the votes they won, the only bias the electoral system should have is to the voters."

He had tried to set up a meeting with his friend Kemi Badenoch but their schedules were not compatible. VANCE HOLIDAYING ACROSS UK JD Vance 's trip to the UK has seen him travelling through the Cotswolds and southern England with his family. The vice-president, his wife Usha, and children Ewan, 8, Vivek, 5, and Mirabel, 3, were seen travelling together in an extensive motorcade. Some locals were left disgruntled, however, as he visited a posh farm shop in the area - leading to a number of road closures and security checkpoints manned by police with sniffer dogs. His 18-strong motorcade caused disruption around Chipping Norton as the VP visited the Daylesford Organic farm shop. Several large black SUVs carrying people believed to be Secret Service agents were seen parked on the driveway. It came after a meeting with Foreign Secretary David Lammy at Chevening House in Kent on Friday. The pair are understood to have forged an unlikely friendship, even spending time with each other's families outside of business meetings. During their meeting, the VP urged Britain to avoid the "very dark path" of silencing free speech. He warned that the West has grown "a little too comfortable with censoring" during his press conference with the foreign secretary. He said: "I think the entire collective West, the transatlantic relationship, our Nato allies, certainly the United States under the Biden administration, got a little too comfortable with censoring rather than engaging with a diverse array of opinions." Mr Vance has previously slammed Britain for enforcing some of the toughest restrictions on free speech globally. In February, during a televised meeting between Sir Keir Starmer and Donald Trump in the Oval Office, the Vice President flagged that "infringements on free speech" are now impacting not only Brits but also American tech firms, "and by extension American citizens". Such a massive increase in the jobless and the hopeless only adds to Britain's soaring welfare bill. Labour did have modest plans to cut spending on benefits. They didn't go nearly far enough, but would have been something. But instead the reforms were botched and Keir Starmer gave in to protest from his left-wing MPs. Since then there has been no sign of any new plan. And in the meantime the benefits gravy train continues for some. A chronic lack of assessment means many hundreds of thousands of claims are never properly checked. The Universal Credit figures are yet more dreadful news on the economy for Chancellor Rachel Reeves — much of it self-inflicted. Her National Insurance rise on business has seen companies cut thousands of jobs, adding to the benefits mountain. No wonder the anger of hard-grafting families is growing. A grim toll ON a day when Labour reached the 50,000 illegal immigrants toll, you might have expected a bit of contrition. Instead of accepting that shocking failure, minister Jacqui Smith banged on about the Rwanda scheme. That was a deterrent option which may have worked, but we'll never know because Labour foolishly scrapped it on day one. Since then, the Government has served up a string of short-term plans which will either have a limited effect or be doomed to total failure. A little more recognition of voter anger over the issue wouldn't go amiss. Lost treasures ONE pub a day is closing its doors forever in the UK. But punters are desperate to see their locals survive, with polls showing they would back measures in the next Budget aimed at saving the trade. energy costs and crippling business rates.

ANDREW GRIFFITH: Almost four million people are signed off with no requirement to find a job. That's not fair on all the hard-working taxpayers who subsidise those languishing on benefits
If you ever wanted to know what the warning lights flashing red on the economy look like: this is it. Unemployment up for the tenth month in a row. Over a million more people on benefits in a year. Growth anaemic and borrowing through the roof. Labour is failing those who want a hand up whilst ramping up handouts like there's no tomorrow. Yesterday's jobs bloodbath shows Britain is approaching breaking point. Business can't take much more economic punishment from this Labour government all too happy to hand it out. But I fear worse is still to come. It's shocking that almost four million people of working age are on benefits with no requirement to find work. That is just not fair. Not fair to those people who will be languishing on benefits forever. And certainly not fair to the hard-working taxpayer who is subsidising their lifestyles. But Labour doesn't seem to have realised that if you want to get people off benefits, there need to be good jobs to go to. And it is only private businesses that can provide sustainable jobs: we cannot afford ever more public sector jobs propped up by unaffordable borrowing. But since taking office, this socialist government has waged all-out war on Britain's businesses. The manifesto-breaking, £25billion jobs tax punishes work and hits those trying to get their first job the most. No surprise that in yesterday's figures, it was in the 25 to 34-year-old age group where unemployment is growing the fastest. The family business death tax also means that those firms are now having to save up for a tax bill they can't afford – or simply decide to stop growing. And employers are bracing themselves for the 300-page job-killing Employment Rights Bill – the clue is not in the title – which is set to do the exact opposite of what it says on the tin. It will give unions the whip hand and take us back to the 1970s. Not a single real business supports it, but Labour doesn't care: its union paymasters cannot believe their luck. Anyone who hasn't fabricated their CV would be able to see the obvious outcome of this cacophony of incompetence is firms not hiring, the economy slowing and an explosion of people on benefits. And lo and behold – that is exactly what has happened. We warned them not to do it. They ignored us. Now we are warning them not to go ahead with even more tax rises. If they weren't going to listen before they should listen now that families are having to tighten their belts and jobs are being lost. But our beleaguered Chancellor has her head in the sand. Not one of her Budgets has lasted more than six months and she has just found out she has torn a £50billion black hole in the public finances. Whilst emergency spending cuts are what's needed, her Labour MPs are hungry for more tax and even more spending. Never mind this summer of discontent. Britain: unless this shower of a government is forced to change course, brace yourself for four more years of discontent.
