Erceg plans for Perth fight after career-saving win

Perth Now4 days ago
Steve Erceg says he can back up quickly from his career-saving victory against Ode Osbourne and step into the octagon in Perth for the UFC Fight Night at RAC Arena in September.
Erceg (13-4) snapped a three-fight losing streak with a unanimous decision over Osbourne (13-9) at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Sunday morning.
It was a vital win for the 30-year-old former title contender who was in danger of being cut by the UFC had he lost a fourth consecutive bout.
Erceg said he could back up in only seven weeks and fight in Perth on September 28 when light heavyweights Carlos Ulberg takes on Dominick Reyes in the main event.
'I think so. You never know but I think I can at the moment for sure,' Erceg said when asked if he could do the quick turnaround.
Things didn't look good early in the fight for Erceg when the free-wheeling Osbourne caught him with a lethal right hand.

'(I was) Pretty hurt. Part of the game plan, though. Dad told me, 'Make sure you get hurt early, let him blow his load and then figure it out after that,'' Erceg said.
'I thought I did enough. You never really know, but I thought I had his back in the second, I had his back in the third, so I thought I did enough.'
Erceg said he had 'heaps' of pressure on himself heading into the fight to snap his losing streak.
'You have doubts going through your head,' he said.
'Was I a fraud along? Do I deserve to be here? All that nonsense.
'It's good to fight a tough guy in the UFC. He's been here for ages and to get a tough win.'

White House to host cage fight on July 4: UFC boss

The White House is to play host to a mixed martial arts bout on July 4 next year, the day the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its founding, UFC boss Dana White said Tuesday. President Donald Trump has been a regular guest at the often-bloody contests, where fighters punch, kick and grapple with their opponent in a no-holds-barred battle to submission or knockout. Bringing the brutal combat sport to the center of US political power will mark a historic first. "It is definitely going to happen," White, a high-profile supporter of the US president, told CBS television. "I talked to him last night -- 'him' being the president -- and I'm flying out there at the end of this month, and I'm going to sit down and walk him through all the plans and the renderings, and we're going to start deciding what he wants and doesn't want." Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is the largest and most successful organization in the burgeoning world of MMA, a blend of martial arts disciplines like jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, boxing and wrestling. Bouts take place in an eight-sided ring -- dubbed "The Octagon" -- bounded by a chainlink fence. With few exceptions -- like eye-gouging -- male and female fighters are allowed to employ almost any technique to attack their opponent. Fights often end with a prone fighter being pummeled in the face as they lie on the bloodied floor, before the referee steps in to stop the action. The shaven-headed White, who has regularly spoken warmly of Trump as both a friend and a political leader, said the president's daughter would be involved in organizing the Independence Day spectacle at the White House. "When (Trump) called me and asked me to do it, he said: 'I want Ivanka in the middle of this,'" White told CBS, whose parent company Paramount has just signed a $7.7 billion streaming deal with UFC. White took over the UFC in 2001 when it was a small, loss-making organization, shepherding it into one of the fastest-growing sports promotion companies in the world. The sport's popularity with young men -- a key demographic in the 2024 US election -- and Trump's long association with the UFC, have made the president a regular fixture at some of its more high-profile events, where he is greeted like a rock star. Its brutal nature and high injury rate mean the sport is controversial, with doctors decrying the potential for brain damage amongst fighters who are repeatedly hit in the head, though it has gained increasing mainstream acceptance in recent years. rg-hg/amz/aha

UFC star mortified as intimate item dropped on stage

UFC star Angela Hill was left with her head in her hands after an intimate object was tossed away by an official before her weigh-in at UFC Vegas 109. The 40-year-old was clearly concerned about making weight for her strawweight fight with Iasmin Lucindo and removed her bra inserts before stepping onto the scales. UFC 319: Du Plessis vs Chimaev | SUN 17 AUG 12PM AEST | UFC Middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis puts his title on the line against undefeated Khamzat Chimaev. | Order Now with Main Event on Kayo Sports. Already slightly embarrassed at removing her comfort pads in front of the cameras, Hill was left mortified when she handed them over to an official, who then inadvertently tossed one of the pads several metres away. The official clearly didn't know what to do when he was handed the inserts, and his attempt to place them on a microphone stand resulted in one of them falling onto the ground. While trying to make up for his mistake, one of the inserts was sent flying across the stage at the UFC Apex. The awkward moment left Hill with her head in her hands as she tried to hold back a fit of laughter. She regained her composure after tipping the scales at 116 pounds and showed off by striking a pose before walking off the stage. As reported by The Sun, her honest reaction earned her plenty of plaudits online, with one fan writing: 'She was dope for doing that, scored points with me on personality.' Another added: 'She handled that with as much class as could be possible in that situation. I am now a big fan.' She didn't lose any fans with her performance inside the Octagon on Sunday, but she was clearly outgunned by Lucindo with the judges handing the Brazilian the win via a unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28). The loss means that Hill now has an 18-15-0 record - setting a new record for the most losses ever recorded by a woman in the UFC. American Hall had her head in her hands a second time in a matter of days after the result was announced. 28 of her 33 career fights were in the UFC. Her record in the premier fight promotion stands at 18 losses and 10 wins. Hill, who was ranked 12th in the UFC women's strawweight rankings coming into Vegas 109, is one of the longest-tenured fighters on the roster, first competing in the UFC's 'Ultimate Fighter' series in 2014. The veteran was coming in off a win over Ketlen Souza in February, but her career now stands at a crossroads. There were fireworks on the same UFC Vegas 109 card as Toshiomi Kazama was knocked out cold by a sickening 'power bomb'. Bantamweight Elijah Smith pulled off the KO win after lifting his opponent into the air and dropping him on his head before finishing the contest with two heavy punches while Kazama was already clearly unconscious. In a blockbuster card, Anthony Hernandez also called for a title fight after choking out Roman Dolidze in the main event.

What Paramount's $7.7 Billion UFC Rights Deal Means Now the Pay-Per-View Model is Eliminated

Paramount+ secures UFC rights: $7.7B over seven years Ends ESPN pay-per-view, UFC available to Paramount+ subscribers Deal doubles UFC media revenue, aims to curb rampant piracy Select events simulcast on CBS, international rights unchanged via IMG Paramount+ costs USD$5.99–$11.99 monthly, improving affordability TV and streamer deals are amongst the most lucrative rights purchases, but as pay-per-view content prices rose above USD$100 per month, pirated streams increased tenfold. Mark Shapiro, president and Chief Operating Officer of UFC parent company TKO Holdings, has been looking at alternative paths since February, and today, the company announced a new UFC partnership with streaming service Paramount+, valued at USD$7.7 billion across seven years. 'The double paywall had gotten out of control,' said Shapiro in an interview with Forbes. 'We were seeing piracy number up tenfold, which is what you see for big boxing pay-per-views.' While UFC President Dana White hasn't ruled out the potential for UFC pay-per-view events in the future, including an additional PPV-only event, the reality is that the sport will now exclusively be available to subscribers of Paramount+ in the United States, with select events to be simulcast on CBS. Things won't change too much locally as the UFC will continue to sell its international rights territory by territory through IMG, worth an estimated USD$250 million per year. Still, UFC fans in the U.S. should gear up for a few changes. Here's everything you need to know about the Paramount UFC deal. Dana White | Image: Supplied What This Deal Means for the UFC David Ellison, son of the world's second-richest man, Larry Ellison, is the 42-year-old CEO of Skydance Media. Last week, his company bought Paramount for $8 billion, and this week, they purchased the rights to the UFC for $7.7 billion. 'These guys came in aggressive with an all-or-nothing approach and said 'We want the whole thing,'' said Dana White in an interview with Forbes. 'The Ellisons are brilliant businessmen and have a whole game plan behind this thing. I can't wait to be in business with them.' But what does that mean for the UFC? More money for one. The partnership will double the UFC's media rights revenue compared to its previous partner, ESPN. More affordable access (USD$5.99- $11.99 per month for a Paramount+ subscription) will also constrain the rise of pirated streams, which is essential when losing viewers to these illegal streams. Finally, the UFC will continue to control its broadcast productions, and 'It's going to be like that until I leave,' according to Dana White. David Ellison | Image: Supplied What This Deal Means for Paramount By the numbers, the Paramount UFC deal dwarfs the NHL ($635 million) and the PGA Tour ($700 million) in annual revenue. It now competes more closely with the MLB ($1.8 billion), Olympics ($1.3 billion), March Madness ($1.1 billion) and NASCAR ($1.1 billion). Paramount will benefit from an increased audience, opening the books for more advertisers as the streamer hopes to increase market share from 2% of all monthly TV viewing, according to Nielsen. The company has roughly 77.7 million subscribers for its Paramount+, but this pales in comparison to major competitors like Netflix (300 million), Amazon Prime Video (200 million), Disney+ (150 million), and HBO Max (125 million). What This Deal Means for UFC Fans While we're still trying to understand the NBA's confusing ABC/ESPN, Comcast (NBC/Peacock), and Amazon deal, which will net the league around USD$76 billion from the 2025-26 season through 2035-36, this Paramount UFC deal is easier to understand. The partnership with streaming service Paramount+ will eliminate ESPN's pay-per-view model, which has been a part of the UFC's partnership for over six years. Simply put, subscribers to Paramount+ will be able to watch UFC Fight Night on the streaming platform as part of their subscription. That's a win for the fans, but whether or not current UFC fans will find their way onto the platform is another question.
