Penang stays resilient, innovative amid world trade tensions

GEORGE TOWN: Penang has reaffirmed its commitment to resilience, innovation, and maintaining global competitiveness amid world's trading environment which remains tense, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
He said during the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI) Northern Annual Luncheon Dialogue 2025 here today that Penang remains open for business, innovation and collaboration because the state has always been about resilience.
'From our trading port roots to our rise as a global electronics and innovation hub, we have learned to pivot when the world shifts and this moment is no different. Our economy is tightly integrated into global supply chains whether it's semiconductors, electronics, precision tools or medical devices.
'So when shocks happen, they are felt in Bayan Lepas and Batu Kawan just as much as in Shanghai (China) or San Jose (California). But I always say, we must look for silver linings, not all is doom and gloom,' he said.
Chow pointed out that multinational firms reassess their regional footprints and many are looking to move into more politically stable, efficient and transparent ecosystems. Thus, Penang with robust infrastructure, skilled workforce, and business-friendly environment is a natural choice, he said.
He also praised Malaysia's proactive diplomatic efforts due to indications that tariffs on Malaysian goods may be capped at 10 per cent as opposed to the feared 24 per cent or more by US President Donald Trump.
'As our Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz rightly pointed out, this is a favourable shift and one that reflects, in part, Malaysia's proactive diplomatic efforts.
'I applaud the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) for taking a direct and decisive approach, including writing personally to Trump to propose a US-ASEAN Special Summit. This shows that Malaysia is not just reacting but taking leadership in shaping trade outcomes for the region,' he added.
The luncheon were also attended by MICCI Northern Branch chairman Datuk Brian Tan Guan Hooi together with 200 attendees from various industries and related sectors.

National ESG Strategic Plan and 13MP near completion, unaffected by ministers' resignations

KUALA LUMPUR: The resignations of two key ministers will not disrupt the progress of the National Environmental, Social and Governance Strategic Plan (NESP) or the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), both of which are nearing completion, said Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib. To a question on the progress of NESP and 13MP, Hanifah Hajar confirmed that the 13MP is almost ready to be presented to the Cabinet, while work on the NESP is actively ongoing. 'All ministries understand the importance of ESG (environmental, social and governance), and our civil servants have been working on it with clear ideas they want to implement,' she told reporters on the sidelines of the Forward Faster Symposium 2025 hosted by the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei (UNGCMYB) here today. It was reported that the 13MP document is expected to be tabled in Parliament next month. However, she noted that a definitive timeline for the delivery of the NESP has yet to be confirmed. This follows the resignation of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli as Minister of Economy and the resignation of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, which will take effect on July 4. Earlier in her keynote address at the symposium, Hanifah Hajar said the NESP is aligned with global ESG frameworks and complements six pillars under the National Sustainability Strategic Framework and Industry ESG. 'The NESP is a comprehensive initiative aimed at guiding Malaysian businesses toward ESG compliance and sustainable practices. It will support Malaysian business entities, especially small and medium enterprises in phases, to move toward ESG reporting and even beyond compliance,' she said. The one-day symposium brought together over 200 participants, including high-level executives, sustainability practitioners, and business leaders. With the theme 'Accelerating Corporate Sustainability Commitments for a Resilient Future,' the event featured in-depth discussions and high-level dialogues on the evolving role of business in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The discussions were seen as timely amid economic headwinds and rising geopolitical tensions, with Malaysian corporate leaders increasingly strengthening their ESG commitments and positioning sustainability as a strategic tool to manage risk, drive long-term value, and contribute to national development.

Pushing The Boundaries Of Semiconductor & Augmented Reality: SCHOTT Celebrates 50 Years Of Cutting-Edge Glass Processing In Malaysia

Subscribe to our FREE SCHOTT celebrated the 50 th anniversary in Malaysia with the Honorary Consul of Germany, representatives from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), customers and key media. The Malaysian sites provide high-end processing for high-tech industries, including AR, semiconductors, medical, and other industrial applications. As the first manufacturing hub in Asia, SCHOTT Malaysia continues to increase production capacity in Penang and Kulim. The international technology group SCHOTT celebrated the 50th anniversary of its presence in Malaysia at Eastern & Oriental Hotel Penang today. The event was graced by Dato' Hans Peter Brenner, Honorary Consul of Germany and representatives from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA). Its production plants in Penang and Kulim are two of SCHOTT's leading facilities in Asia to provide high-end processing for global high-tech industries, including semiconductors, augmented reality, consumer electronics, medical, space, and other industrial applications. The Penang plant was founded 50 years ago as the Germany-based company's first high-tech glass processing hub in Asia, and the Kulim site was inaugurated in September 2024 to further build up production capacity. 'In the 1970s, as the SCHOTT brand grew in global prestige and recognition, we wanted a site that could service markets within the Asian region. Due to its strategic location, we decided to set up our first production site in Asia here in Penang, and it has played a crucial role in serving customers not just in Southeast Asia, but also leading companies in Korea, China, Europe, and the US ever since. Since opening our doors in 1975, we have grown from strength to strength, with a tenfold increase in the number of employees and a substantial expansion of our offerings for diverse high-tech industries, from AR gadgets and foldable devices, next-generation chips, space exploration to medical technology,' said Mr. Peter Berberich, Site Manager of SCHOTT Penang. 'Through the government's support, our continued investment and the expansion of our facilities in Malaysia, we aspire to consistently build and develop local talents through knowledge and training, allowing a space for the younger generation to keep innovating and pushing the boundaries of specialty glass,' he added. What I find particularly inspiring is how their continued investment in Malaysia aligns with our own aspirations for the future, as outlined in the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030. It is a testament to the fact that, together, we can achieve great things and create a brighter future for our people. I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the entire SCHOTT team and look forward to many more years of collaboration and success,' said Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, CEO of MIDA. 'Malaysia and Germany are major trading partners and have always supported each other, especially in the business and education industries. SCHOTT's presence in Malaysia is a great example of how both countries have come together, combining resources and manpower to create products and services that shape the future of technology in the world. As time goes on, we hope to continue this incredible partnership with Malaysia, further strengthening our ties through teamwork and resilience,' said Dato' Hans Peter Brenner, Honorary Consul of Germany. To further demonstrate SCHOTT's dedication towards enhancing the technology sector in Malaysia, the 50th anniversary event offered its attendees a sneak peek into the future through the setup of exhibits that allowed attendees to take a closer look at ongoing SCHOTT projects.
