Heinemann Diversifies In Middle East And India As 2024 Growth Hits 21%

Forbes09-05-2025

Istanbul Airport remains a sales driver for Gebr. Heinemann and its partners.
Germany-based global travel retailer Gebr. Heinemann is opening up the Middle East/Africa and Indian markets, having seen a reshaping of its geographical revenue in 2024, which hit €4.3 billion ($4.8 billion). This was the first time in the company's 145-year history that it crossed the €4 billion line.
The only family-owned retailer among the major global players in the duty-free industry released its 2024 results on Friday morning. They showed a 21% surge in turnover in a year when the company signaled its entry into new markets following tender wins in India and Iceland, among others.
The growth was better than European rivals. Aer Rianta International achieved 13% last year on managed turnover to €1.4 billion ($1.6 billion) while much larger competitors Avolta and Lagardère Travel Retail reached 6.4% and 12.5% (like-for-like), respectively.
Raoul Spanger, co-CEO of the company alongside fifth-generation family member Max Heinemann, described the result as 'very satisfying' and added: 'Several successes will continue to shape our future growth. These included the start of operations at Saudi Arabia's Jeddah Airport and aboard the country's first cruise ship, Aroya. In addition, we secured tender wins at Noida Airport in India and Keflavik Airport in Iceland, both new markets for our retail business.'
Noida is a greenfield airport under construction by a subsidiary of Switzerland's Zurich Airport through a public-private partnership. It was set to open this month but has been delayed. The gateway could eventually be a sizable contributor to Heinemann's coffers as there are plans to take capacity to 70 million passengers in its fourth phase, if that materializes.
'India is an emerging market in travel retail, and we see the Indian consumer gaining momentum everywhere across our customer portfolio,' said Spanger. India's outbound departures are projected to grow to 52 million by 2029, with an expected CAGR of 11.5% while the country's luxury goods market is the second-fastest growing in the world at 32%, according to Singapore-based consultancy YCP Auctus.
In 2024, Heinemann's main region of Europe saw its share of revenue drop from 59% to 56%, while the Middle East/Africa (which includes Turkey) rose from 31% to 33%. This was due to the strength of the Middle East rather than any inherent weakness in Europe, though the region might take a hit this year as Heinemann exits its retail joint venture at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport this month as it hands over to Lagardère Travel Retail.
Raoul Spanger: 'We secured tender wins at Noida Airport in India and Keflavik Airport in Iceland, ... More both new markets for our retail business.'
Asia Pacific, meanwhile, was up by one percentage point to 9%, but the retailer has cut investment there for now—and is not the only one—due to low Chinese per-passenger spending that is now only about half of what it used to be.
This has left the door open for the Middle East to take up the slack. Last year, Turkey's Istanbul and Israel's Ben Gurion airports were the top two gateways for sales, followed by the airports of Oslo, Frankfurt and Sydney.
Heinemann operates at Istanbul Airport in a joint venture with Unifree Duty Free and ATU Duty Free and the location has been a key growth engine. The company has expanded in Turkey by winning the tender for Antalya Airport through ATU Duty Free.
Spanger said: 'We see additional potential in the region. To be close to the market and our customers, we elevated our Dubai office, which has been operational since 2023, to the status of a regional headquarters and will continue to strengthen our team there.'
Bernard Schlafstein was promoted from a regional sales director to CEO of Heinemann Middle East/Africa last month while a new logistics hub will open in Istanbul in 2026. Some 33% of the company's consolidated turnover is in the distribution side of the business, where it has its historical roots.
These moves send a strong signal to Heinemann's partners and customers in the Middle East region which is known for its luxury airport retailing in places like Qatar's Hamad Airport, a third-time winner of Skytrax's world best airport shopping award, and Dubai Duty Free.
Having celebrated its 145th anniversary in November 2024, Gebr. Heinemann added a second member of the fifth generation to the business: the co-CEO's cousin, Clara Heinemann. 'She is now actively involved in the company. We think in generations, and our employees and partners can count on that,' said Max Heinemann.
As a senior project manager in the commercial effectiveness department, Clara Heinemann is leading a data-driven global assortment project to define and manage product categories more effectively.

Costco Issues 'Warning' to Shoppers Ahead of June 30 Change

Costco is giving a new benefit to its highest tier of members next month, and the big announcement is coming with days to spare until the new change. Starting in a matter of days, Costco will open its warehouse stores one hour earlier for all of those who have the Executive Membership - the most expensive and highest tier of Costco's membership program. Previously, the perk of additional hours was only available at certain locations. The new change will affect all Costco locations, incentivizing shoppers who prefer to venture at at earlier time or with less crowds to do so under the more expensive membership. "Our Executive Members are our most loyal members, and we want to reward them for their commitment to Costco," the company said in an email, according to Business Insider. In addition to the earlier hours, Executive Members will also receive a $10 monthly credit for orders made through Instacart and up to $150 in savings on other services. Most Costco warehouses open at 10 AM and at 9:30 AM on Saturdays, but Executive Members will be able to shop at 9 AM on weekdays from June 30 onward. The pharmacy, optical center, and food court - among other specialized areas within the store - may not open at the earlier time, depending on the location and its staffing on that particular day. Executive Memberships cost $130 per year, and gives members a free Costco membership card valid at all locations around the globe. Members also receive an annual 2% benefit on select purchases, perks on Costco travel and other benefits. Costco's Gold Star Membership costs $65 annually, effectively cutting the cost in half over the course of a calendar year. Members do lose out on the extra benefits, but they still earn the same membership card that's valid at every Costco warehouse around the world. The membership prices are up across the board from their previous status. Gold Star was once $60 while the Executive Membership was once $120, price increases that come as the chain admits prices on certain goods will increase due to impeding tariffs. These items mostly include food imported from other countries, and Costco will increase prices in America to retain the same profit margins from before the implementation of those tariffs. Legal Questions Surface Over Walmart's Hoka Dupe

Dupe culture's the trend, and there may not be much that brands can do about it. The latest example is a pair of Avia shoes that sold out on Walmart. Some shoppers say the style is a Hoka dupe. One reviewer named Ashley said her daughter's podiatrist recommended the Hoka brand, but noted that 'they are a bit pricey for an elementary age child. I saw these are considered DUPES and when I got them I was so impressed.' More from WWD Do Crocs Shrink in Heat? The Issue Is at the Center of a New Lawsuit Shoe Executive Richard Kirschenbaum and G-III Trade Legal Barbs EY Report Urges Retail Firms to Reclaim Their Relevance Another named Jackie wrote: 'This line of Avia shoes are inexpensive copy cats of Hoka shoes, which I cannot afford. Not only were these shoes on clearance, they are similar in fit and comfort to Hoka but for only $8.24 on clearance.' Bridget said she's an avid Skechers buyer, but tried the Avia shoe because the 'clearance price made it worth the gamble.' Still, all the reviews weren't positive. Another reviewer, KCShopper, wrote about the excitement of purchasing shoes for $12, but wore the shoes only once because 'both heels were bleeding with the worst blisters.' While top-tier footwear brands have long been subject to knockoffs, the so-called dupe trend has put the issue in the spotlight. Last year, Walmart sold a 'Birkin' handbag dupe called the 'Wirkin' for $60 that went viral on TikTok and sold out. And shoe designer Steve Madden, whose firm has been around since 1990, remains unapologetic about his brand's propensity for knocking off designer looks. So what can brands do about the latest duping craze? 'Dupes of this sort are typically legal so long as they are not infringing on the trademark, or logo/branding of the shoe,' observed Mark Brutzkus, partner and chair of the consumer products practice at the law firm Stubbs Alderton & Markiles. 'If Hoka does have a trademark, they will have to prove that Walmart's Avia shoe or its packaging has caused reasonable consumer confusion.' Brutzkus did raise one potential legal claim. 'What is most likely to be at play is the issue of trade dress, which focuses on the acquired distinctiveness of the shoe design as opposed to its functionality,' he said. But Hoka would have to prove that stitching, silhouette, and other nonfunctional features are associated with their branding by customers and cause confusion when imitated, he explained. 'As these cases can be difficult and expensive to prove, a settlement is far more likely in any case,' the attorney concluded. Hoka brand executives did not provide a comment by press time. BTIG retail analyst Janine Stichter said earlier this month in a note to clients that 'dupe culture continues to grow.' Luxury bag dupe posts on social media in April grew by nearly 10 times versus earlier in the year, with Louis Vuitton and Hermès the two most mention handbag brand mention in connection to dupes. 'The growth in dupe culture reflects the increasing demand for mid-tier products that offer strong value propositions following large post-COVID price increases from luxury players. This is particularly true for younger generations, which have a more supportive view of dupe culture,' Stichter wrote. Jaqui Lividini, founder and CEO of brand strategy firm Lividini & Co., said the growth in dupe culture 'speaks to an economic reality that not everyone can afford to buy into a product that is at a certain level of expense and iconology.' However, the knockoffs allow consumers to participate in that trend and people embrace that, she said, adding that the dupes are 'just a more fun expression of these iconic things…. I don't really think it takes away from the original,' Lividini said, noting that the dupe iconifies the 'original even more.' One Wall Street observer said anyone buying a dupe knows that he or she is not buying the authentic item from the brand. This person doesn't see these sales taking away from the brand because anyone willing to spend the money for the original branded version, such as a true Hoka shoe, is buying more for comfort and quality and not necessarily for its looks. A study from authentication firm Entrupy Inc. on the 'State of the Fake' concluded that the line between a dupe and fake is blurry, making enforcement both murky and uneven. According to the report, the most 'faked brand' overall in sneakers is Alexander McQueen. In Great Britain, it is a Dior sneaker, while in Netherlands, it is New Balance. And in Germany, Adidas is the most copied sneaker brand. It also said that fabrication has moved beyond logo placement and sole shape, and that there's been refinement at 'every level of construction.' The Entrupy report also noted the rise in what it calls 'rep culture,' a high-quality, intentional fake sneaker designed to closely imitate the original release. It also noted how across TikTok and YouTube there were detailed guides last year telling one how to 'upgrade' reps by swapping insoles and other modifications, a 'subculture of normalizing rep customization as a kind of sneaker DIY.' Most recently, Nike Inc. fought back, and its settlement with Shoe Surgeon has set some boundaries on sneaker customization.
