Packers quarterback Jordan Love out for at least a week after having procedure on left thumb

Washington Post4 days ago
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love will miss at least a week after having a procedure to repair a ligament issue in his left thumb, general manager Brian Gutekunst said Tuesday.
Love was spotted with his thumb wrapped on the sideline during the Packers' 30-10 preseason loss to the New York Jets on Saturday. Love started the game and went 1 of 5 for 7 yards with neither of the two drives he led resulting in points.
The injury is to Love's non-throwing hand and occurred, coach Matt LaFleur said, when he was sacked for a 3-yard loss by Jay Tufele on the quarterback's final snap from scrimmage.
LaFleur said he's been informed the recovery process is a quick one, with the expectation Love will be back at practice in some capacity next week. Green Bay travels to play Indianapolis on Aug. 16, and LaFleur has already ruled out Love from playing in the Packers' final preseason game against Seattle on Aug. 23.
The decision for Love to have the procedure came after he took part in practice Monday.
LaFleur credited the third-year starter for 'powering through' the session while exclusively handing off the ball with his right hand.
Malik Willis is the Packers primary backup and had two starts in seven appearances last year after being acquired in a trade from Tennessee.

Phillies closer Jhoan Duran fine a day after taking liner off right ankle

WASHINGTON (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies closer Jhoan Duran described himself as '100 percent' on Saturday, a day after he left a 6-2 victory over Washington after taking a line drive off his right ankle. 'I'm normal, like nothing happened,' Duran said. The right-hander, who has four saves in five scoreless appearances since he was acquired in a trade with Minnesota last month, was hit by Paul DeJong's leadoff shot in the ninth inning Friday. Duran limped off to foul territory and eventually was taken off the field by the Nationals' bullpen cart. Manager Rob Thomson said X-rays were negative Friday and declared Duran 'good to go' Saturday. 'He actually walked out to the bus pretty good, and then he came in normal,' Thomson said. Thomson also said the Phillies plan to activate third baseman Alec Bohm on Sunday. Bohm went on the injured list July 19 with a fractured left rib. He is hitting .278 with eight homers and 42 RBIs. ___ AP MLB:

Raphinha and Yamal score as Barcelona starts La Liga title defense beating 9-man Mallorca

MADRID (AP) — Barcelona began the defense of its La Liga title with a comfortable 3-0 win at Mallorca, scoring early and taking advantage of two first-half red cards for the host on Saturday. Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, who led Barcelona's prolific attack last season, needed only seven minutes to impress again. Yamal's curling cross found Raphinha by the far post and the Brazil forward headed in from close range. Ferran Torres' shot from outside the area in the 23rd was a goal that drew complaints by Mallorca because one of its players was on the ground after being hit by the ball in the head in the buildup. Some Mallorca players stopped playing after their teammate went down, but the referee allowed play to continue. Mallorca immediately complained after Ferran scored. The host went a man down 10 minutes later when Manu Morlanes was sent off for a second yellow card for fouling Yamal on the run. His first yellow was for protesting Barcelona's second goal. The second red card in the 39th came from Mallorca striker Vedat Muriqi hitting the head of Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García with his left foot while reaching up for a high ball. The referee changed the card from yellow to red after a video review. Yamal made it 3-0 in second half stoppage time by hitting the top corner. Barcelona, which won the league last season after scoring 102 goals, was without veteran striker Robert Lewandowski because of an injury. Newly signed forward Marcus Rashford went in as a substitute in the 69th. New Barcelona goalkeeper García didn't have to work much in his Barcelona debut after being signed in the offseason in a transfer from city rival Espanyol. Regular starting goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen is out after undergoing lower back surgery, and García started ahead of Wojciech Szczęsny and Iñaki Peña, who replaced Ter Stegen last season. Later Saturday, Valencia hosted Real Sociedad and promoted Levante visited Alaves. On Friday, Rayo Vallecano won at Girona 3-1 and Villarreal defeated promoted Oviedo 2-0. Atletico Madrid is at Espanyol on Sunday, while Real Madrid hosts Osasuna on Tuesday. ___ AP soccer:
