Magnitude 3.0 earthquake in New Jersey shakes New York metro area
A quake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.0 hit Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, at 10:18 p.m., according to the United States Geological Survey, or USGS.
There have not been reports of injuries or of structural damage, said Jonathan Tytell, a geophysicist at the USGS.
The earthquake has a preliminary depth of 10 kilometers, which is shallow relative to others that have happened on Earth, he said.
No major impacts were reported shortly after the quake, NYC Emergency Management said. The agency reported that tremors may have been felt in parts of the city.
New Yorkers should be prepared for aftershocks that could occur minutes, hours or even days after the initial event, a post on the agency's X account said. The post also recommended that those who felt shaking check for hazards like items that moved, falling debris or cracks.
The Empire State building made sure to let New Yorkers know it survived the shake, posting on X: "I AM FINE."
Tytell said the earthquake was "substantially less life threatening" than the 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Russia that prompted tsunami warnings in the U.S.
Those in the area of Saturday's quake can expect 1.0 magnitude aftershocks, Tytell said, but whether this was a precursor to something larger is unlikely.
He also said he did not think this was an aftershock to the 4.8-magnitude earthquake in the area that took place in April 2024.

Grain elevator fire prompts boil water advisory for northwestern Minnesota city
A grain elevator fire in Shelly, Minnesota, on Friday morning has prompted a boil water advisory for its residents, the Norman County Sheriff's Office said. More than a dozen states in the northern part of the contiguous U.S. have a chance to see the northern lights. About 15 states could catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis on Aug. 9, according to the latest forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center. An earlier forecast for Friday, Aug. 8, showed a possibility of seeing the aurora in about 18 states was downgraded to a lesser event shorter before 8 a.m. ET. A coronal mass ejection, or large expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the sun, lifted off the star on Aug. 5, raising expectations to cause geomagnetic activity, according to NOAA. For Aug. 9, NOAA said it predicts a geomagnetic K-index of 5. The K-index measures geomagnetic activity and indicates how far away from the poles the northern lights could be visible, according to the agency. A Kp score between 3-5 indicates brighter and increased activity, per NOAA. On another geomagnetic storm scale, NOAA ranks the event a G1, which is considered a minor event. The northern lights, a natural phenomenon formally known as the aurora borealis, can project colorful lights in the night sky because of an interaction between the sun's plasma and Earth's magnetic field, according to the National Weather Service. When could the northern lights be visible? The best view of the northern lights is usually within an hour or two of midnight, according to NOAA. Heat Advisory issued for Southern Colorado counties
(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Pueblo has issued a Heat Advisory due to high temperatures expected on Thursday, Aug. 7. NWS issued a heat advisory across Colorado, with El Paso, eastern Fremont, Pueblo, Crowley, Otero, and Prowers counties from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Expected temperatures in the region will range between 95 and 103 degrees at the highest. Hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses, which include heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and rhabdomyolysis — a condition associated with heat stress and prolonged physical exertion, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
